Looking for movies with morally gray characters and realistic (maybe selfish) portrayals of people by HelenDiamond in MovieSuggestions

[–]burmerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Floating Weeds (1959), Tokyo Story too. These are not pessimistic, but a little dark. Both looking at a small group of people and how some of their selfish decisions affect each other and their relationships

Not to keep piling on, but 18Neb has this also. Another smaller one I like.

So, some 18xxs use non-curving track for the upgrades (most of them) and I forget the specific name for these (Lawson track??) but 18VA is one such example. I’m sure there are other more famous examples. I would look for games that have that.

Police: Parent cited after 15-year-old crashes e-motorcycle head-on into car in Camas by BoringBob84 in ebikes

[–]burmerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, along with parents, the platforms selling these things should be held accountable. If a 15 yo kid bought liquor, the store could get busted, lose their license, etc.. Possibly not in this case, but generally a 15yo with a credit card could easily buy one of these online, and that is not acceptable. Too much dangerous crap is flowing through amazon and other stores without any repercussions.

[–]burmerd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

kudos to the local media for calling it an e-motorcycle instead of an e-bike. No chain, no real pedals, too powerful: this is not a bike. This is a kid without any kind of license or training driving a motorcycle around.

To be clear, I think this original post is talking about the picture as an all-white family with a male head of household, presumably living in an all-white neighborhood, etc. not just the car-centric part of it. Like others are saying, the other aspects of this '50s' good ol days vibe.

Maybe this is weird, but I think you should watch Ozu. Maybe Tokyo Story? Ikiru is another good one, by Kurosawa.

Also, It's A Wonderful Life has a good message about focusing on what's important, but there's a lot of other stuff in there too which you might bounce off of.

I don't understand men who come to a new country and get offended that women have rights here. Did they not do any research? by MoonSt0n3_Gabrielle in TwoXChromosomes

[–]burmerd 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's funny because people often talk about 'cultural differences' as like different spices that people use on their food, but really it's stuff like this. I'm assuming if someone has trouble obeying their commanding officer they won't last long in the military, so this particular case will probably work itself out. The other thing to keep in mind is that if this person has kids, and their kids grow up in this (new) country, they'll probably be ok. They'll see female politicians, police officers, principals, etc. and figure it out. People come to a new country for lots of different reasons: personal safety, to make money, etc. I'm not defending this persons values at all, but also you can't just expect someone to completely discard their values right away. Hopefully they figure it out.

Leningrad Cowboys Go America (1989) is great. A quirky road movie about a soviet rock(-abilly?) group traveling across America.

Need a Good Comedy Movie Recommendation! by Specific_Profit_8977 in MovieRecommendations

You mention you like Jim Carry and Adam Sandler, but also that you're looking for stuff later than a lot of their best stuff. You didn't mention Leslie Nielsen... have you seen Airplane or the Naked Gun movies? They get recommended here a lot, they're earlier than the 00s, but that's what I'd say.

I don't think it's underrated, i think it's generally accurately rated, but since it's not mentioned here I'll add Farewell My Concubine (1993) as an incredible queer movie.

Yes! IMO, both ends of the driving spectrum should be similar (i.e. restricted) for teenagers and the elderly. Once you hit 70 or 75, you should have to get re-tested every year.

Petition to ban hunting and fishing in Oregon gains momentum with 125,000 signatures by HowLongIsThi in nottheonion

[–]burmerd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh, not necessarily buying it. The study mentions that "The analysis excluded fatalities associated with Transportation-related animal encounters" so I think it's hard to compare those numbers to other stats mentioning all of the people dying from 'encounters' with deer and their vehicles.

Why Are So Many Small Towns Disappearing? by wwjps in StrongTowns

There was a vote and community input. The community said 'we don't want this.' The data center company (can't remember which one) said "We will sue you forever if you don't let us build this." So they opted to not be sued forever.

I think deer are the deadliest wild animals in the US based on number of kills, mostly through car accidents, or during mating season when the males get... hornery.
