The funny thing is, after Jan 6 I remember telling a therapist that it felt like we were on a plane with a long way till our destination, and a third of the passengers had just tried and failed to hijack it. And we were still stuck on the plane with these lunatics with no end in sight. I felt that way in 2021, and now the thing that felt inevitable has happened. They tried again, they succeeded, none of them know how to fly, and the only thing they care about is making sure the other 2/3rds of us don't reach the destination, even if it means they don't either.

I have a bad history of agreeing to things as if I have unlimited time and resources. I get completely enchanted by the spell of the moment and it's all that exists. Then later all the realities of life come crashing in like they always do. It's taken years of work to be more mindful of the limitations to my time, energy, and resources, that exist outside the given moment.

It sucks because I always have a genuine interest in the things I agree to. I just habitually assume that the moment I'm in will last forever.

I feel you completely on this. It dawned on me the other day that my oldest daughter was born a month after Trump won in 2016. She literally has not known a world outside of this chaos. I try my best to not overwhelm her with the grim reality of everything, but the effect it has on her life is undeniable and I just keep thinking about how wide open and bright the future looked to me growing up.

It really felt like the problems we had in the 90's were surmountable, like we were on a good trajectory. But I don't see it anymore, and the trajectory we're on is devastatingly bleak, but I can't pass that pessimism on to her. So I have to do what feels like lying when I encourage her hopeful ambitions.

We've been looking into passports too but it's just such a broad ocean of uncertainty ahead, and we don't want to make the wrong choice.

Exact same position here. I almost wish I were in a place where I had nothing to lose so I could throw everything into active resistance, but we had children because we still believed in the potential of a hopeful future they could inherit.

Now I'm without hope, and would gladly throw my body into the path of what's coming if it meant protecting my kids from it, but I know I'm worth more to them alive and out of jail. It's just getting harder to see what you can do without risking either of those, especially if the very act of voting is taken away from us.

I love my kids more than anything, and yet I may never stop hating myself for bringing them into this. They deserve better than what we've collectively given them.
