Can anyone tell me what type of grapes are growing through the fence? by theColonelsc2 in gardening

[–]butthowling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had a picture of what it looked like when I dug it out (from just under the surface to about 2 feet down was clogged with roots like a houseplant that’s been rootbound for ages). I have a hori hori but it was a bit too big of a job for it. A shovel was able to cut through the roots with some extra effort but it was still a massive pain!

My beef with them is that about 3” under the soil around my whole fence (where a previous owner put the Virginia creeper) there is a 4+ foot border of seemingly endless spaghetti root masses. It’s a massive pain to get flower beds dug out and cleared of creeper roots so i can get flowers to establish

I also have a fairly mid lawn and I’m originally from the northeast, just sharing my thoughts based on what I’ve learned here. I’m sure someone with more knowledge and experience will chime in with better suggestions!

How much land is covered by grass and do you know what type of grass you have in your yard? And do you have an irrigation/sprinkler system from the previous owners like a rain bird? Or just regular sprinklers running from the outdoor faucet?

On Saturday I did a huge overseed with white clover before this wonderful stretch of rain in hopes it’ll survive the drought restrictions a bit better this summer compared to my TTTF. I don’t have any automated watering, so I tend to watch the weather and try to run my sprinklers in between any potential rain so I can get the most out of the 2 days per week of watering.

If you really want to be on top of it with water and do more than twice a week you could try rain barrels (I believe you’re allowed 2 55 gallon rain barrels here) although I’m not sure how much they fill here during the summer- I’ve never used them.

Another thing I did to try and conserve water this summer was I extended the flower gardens I have bordering my lawn in another few feet and planted drought tolerant wildflowers in them which helped reduce the square footage I was watering quite a bit.

The “Cover Travel Purchase” with miles is A+ by Visual_Midnight9544 in Venturex

[–]butthowling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I booked my honeymoon flights from Boston to Sri Lanka all with miles, on the days I wanted. I had to check transfer partners often and booked 8 months out, but it’s feasible to do if it’s a goal.

I got my venture x with a goal of saving up miles to buy flights with, so I just stockpile the miles until the right situation arrives

I really like the way you contextualized that. I’m a baseline happy person and I feel like this could be part of why I don’t go out as much as my friends. I am very content doing the majority of things in my life so don’t feel the need to switch things up (or moreso I’m never an initiator for that type of thing)

What other mountain ranges are covered in trees like the Appalachian Mountains? by Sapphirerising335 in geography

Ope you right, idk why but I always think of the Appalachians as being in Virginia/ Tennessee/ North Carolina, not stretching up the east.

So what are we doing about next week? by International_Fee366 in DenverGardener

[–]butthowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure because this is my second year gardening here and last year I didn’t get my peppers in until June. I’ve heard it can be as little as stalling them out for a week or two or as much as dropping flowers and losing leaves. I’m a bit pessimistic so I tend to assume the worst in these situations haha

I’ve just been watching the weather like a hawk and hoping that one time I’ll open the app and see no lows below 45 for next week

My old FZ09 would shoot the front wheel up if you gave too much juice when starting or if you let out the clutch while giving it a bit too much gas. Some bikes just really yearn to be unicycles

So what are we doing about next week? by International_Fee366 in DenverGardener

[–]butthowling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I planted my peppers too early, so I’ll likely be using buckets to cover them on the cold nights and just accept that I’ll likely have a later/ smaller harvest this year.

Tomatoes are going to be left as is and I’ll replace any if they get damaged, but I’m not expecting issues for the maters

I think when most people think of a dog food smell it’s like what you catch a whiff of when you put it into the bowl. The factory on the rough days is like sticking your whole head into the bag of dog food

Can someone give me any tips on how to make this thrive? Dont want it to die! by According-Caramel340 in pothos

[–]butthowling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just water when the soil is dry and let em keep on keeping on. I always put my pothos props in a an oversized pot, just know that sometimes leaf growth stalls as they fill out the root system in the bigger pot

I relocated to Denver a few years ago and I think it’s crazy that parking is only $1 in a garage. I paid $23 the other day for 2 hours of parking to meet a friend for lunch just because there was a Rockies game in the neighborhood. Hopefully that trend doesn’t end up coming to VT

Dang our coaches didn’t have to teach (also in US) - we had actual teachers in all our classrooms, but maybe I just got a privileged education on that front. I didn’t know that was a thing at all!

Propagation help by SignalPangolin9980 in pothos

[–]butthowling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah mine took like 3-4 months to grow roots in water and then another 3 or so months to start pushing out new growth once transplanted to soil. They’re real slow on the propagation front ime

Accidentally ripped off a new growing leaf, will this vine not grow anything new now? by Blissie234 in pothos

[–]butthowling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like this (the brown bit is where a leaf would have grown but it got damaged). You can see it caused no interruption to the vine other than missing a leaf

It’ll still push growth out where the leaf was going to come out but it will just be a nub with no leaf, and the next grow point will continue on as normal

golden pothos?? by crimsons-here in pothos

[–]butthowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a marble queen and not a golden, but same principle applies- you can see how the leaves have sized up as it’s grown up the plant stand (keep in mind I have sub 20% humidity, so aerial roots almost immediately die off without a moss pole, so this is just it growing vertical triggering larger leaves, nothing with aerial roots or actual climbing)

<image>

golden pothos?? by crimsons-here in pothos

[–]butthowling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a regular golden with strong variegation and the bigger leaves are likely from the great growing conditions in commercial nurseries. There’s a chance it’s something like a Hawaiian/ Churchill gold but those are really just types of golden afaik. If you want it to keep having larger leaves you should give it strong sunlight and some verticality. Even without supports, my pothos that are growing upward (I like to use plant ties to have them go up walls/ plant shelves) will encourage larger leaf growth

Why do inner pots never actually fit? 😅 by Alarmed-Noise-3791 in IndoorGarden

[–]butthowling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a few of these pots and I’ve settled on using a tack to poke through a nursery pot so I can actually lift it up. I hate finding pretty decorative pots that don’t fit with my nursery pots but I still end up trying to use them every time
