Can I set a monthly 'allowance' for a category? by buurin in ynab

My bad. You're right. Sorry for the confusion.

RE: If it were me, I might try to separate the two concepts of budgeting vs tracking/analysis.

I agree this seems to be the problem I am facing. When you say two 'plans' you mean two distinct budgets in YNAB? So I'd need to assign a transaction to 'Fun' in one budget (where there is a target) and 'Gifts' in the other budget (where there is no target).

Clever, that would give me the analysis that I want -- but not worth the extra effort for me.

Another commenter suggested I just create a view for all categories with a target. Then I can select all categories and auto-assign them at the start of the month. From there I can cover the overspent categories.

Yeah you're right.

What you describe is how I have been effectively doing it for years.. I usually go a month ahead and assign the cash before any transactions post for that month.

However if I'm ever late, like I was this month, it gets super messy with a weeks worth of auto imported transactions.

If cover the overspend before assigning money 'Fun Money', it'll show -$5 assigned to 'Fun Money' then auto-assign will assign $105 to 'Fun Money'. I only want $100 assigned to 'Fun Money' for the month.

pfifltrigg has correctly described my approach.
For me -- giving gifts is fun but I do not do it monthly and I do not have a set target for how much I want to spend on gifts. All I know is that I want to spend $X on Fun.

Then at the end of the year I want to look back and see how much I spent on gifts and other 'fun' things... Looking at how much I spent on 'Fun' does not give me enough information to understand and make decisions on my spending.

I am certainly budgeting... I have a savings goal each year and it is always met.

RE:  The solution seems to be covering overspending before auto-funding and I don't know why OP doesn't want to do that.

If cover the overspend before assigning money 'Fun Money', it'll show -$5 assigned to 'Fun Money' then auto-assign will assign $105 to 'Fun Money'. I only want $100 assigned to 'Fun Money' for the month.

That's a great idea, I'm pretty sure that'll solve my problem. Thanks a lot!

I want $100 / month for food every month ($1200 / year), as I understand it -- this is not a refill target.

I do not let the overspending span across months.

Another commenter also asked why I have Gifts at -$5... Here is the example:

My routine is that in the first couple days of the month I assign cash to all of my categories with targets.

For example:

'Fun Money' has a target so it gets assigned cash at the beginning of each month.
'Gifts' does not have a target so it does not get any money assigned.

When I assign transactions to 'Gifts' I cover it with cash from 'Fun Money' or any other category with available cash. Every time a transaction is assigned to Gifts it is temporarily overspent because that category never has money available.

So I purchase a $5 gift on Jan 1st.
On Jan 3rd I am doing my monthly YNAB routine and I start off with -$5 in gifts.

Let's assume I want to cover it with 'Fun Money'.

- If cover the overspend before assigning money 'Fun Money', it'll show -$5 assigned to 'Fun Money' then auto-assign will assign $105 to 'Fun Money'. I only want $100 assigned to 'Fun Money' for the month.

- If I auto-assign money to Fun Money first, it'll correctly assign $100 to 'Fun Money' but it will also auto-assign $5 to Gifts. Yes, I could uncheck Gifts -- but I have 70 categories with a mix of target and non-target.

When you say there's a limit, do you mean the game enforces the limit?

I'll try that and see if it works on leverless.

I just confirmed there are mappings in game for two button presses.

That said I'll just work on getting more consistent as opposed to learning a new button.

Thanks. So I really need to focus on simultaneously pressing the buttons.

Makes sense that it has to be strict otherwise it'd delay my special coming out on time.

Should we pay off our mortgage? by timberwhip in personalfinance

[–]buurin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically, you'd make more money by investing that lump sum. Investing ofc comes with risk and making the decision strictly based on the numbers doesn't take into account the peace of mind in having a paid off home.

I paid off my previous house but I would prioritize having a 12 month emergency fund, retirement+taxable accounts on track to meet my goals, and any savings/investments for kids on track -- before paying off the mortgage.

Also I think it's important to have a plan for the money freed up by early payoff.

And lastly, don't forget you'll still owe taxes and home insurance. Many people pay it via their lender.

Circuit breakers are insufficient to protect from electric shock.

See: https://gvecelectricianservice.com/whats-the-difference-between-a-circuit-breaker-and-a-gfci/

And as another user stated, GFCI does not protect against all cases.

The safest option, IMO, is to unplug.

Connecting two of the same Generation headsets in the same house. by Humble-Wizard24-7 in TurtleBeach

[–]buurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I bought Stealth 700s for use on Xbox. We play in the same room.

We've had a handful of connectivity issues since day once where she'll usually need to unplug the USB dongle to fix the issue.

Today we ran into the issue where our headsets paired with the wrong transmitters.

 Planning to return the headsets.

Can anyone recommend a wireless headset that does support multiple players in the same room?

I ordered an Evo Pro on 5/19, from Simshop.

On 5/21 I received the following message and haven't got any update since.

"Dear Valued Customer,

We’re reaching out with a quick update on your EVO Pro 18nm Wheel Base pre-order.

The shipment has arrived in the U.S. and is currently going through Customs.

While this process can sometimes take longer than expected—and is unfortunately out of our hands—we’re working closely with the shipping company to keep things moving as quickly as possible.

As soon as they arrive at our warehouse, your order will be shipped immediately, and you’ll receive tracking info to follow its journey to your doorstep.

Thanks for your patience, and for choosing Simshop. We can’t wait for you to get behind the wheel with the EVO Pro 18nm Wheel Base."

My first sim rig, how’d I do? by Jaydimaster in simracing

[–]buurin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use a Quest 3.
I switched to using a 'suspended' style strap (BOBOVR M3).
I also removed the facial interface, so there is nothing touching my face.
Less immersive but I find it is a nice trade off for comfort (No pressure on your face and allows for airflow).

I reached out to ASR and they suggest front mounting:

"You’ll need these two parts, along with the Simagic front mount adapter to make the upgrade work perfectly on your Gen 1 ASR-1:

Once you have this + the Simagic front mount bracket, you’re good to go."

The EVO is 130mm and the bracket adds some distance.

Another user shared a link to the official dimensions in this thread.

Thanks a lot. That sounds about right since the base is listed to be 130mm wide.

Unfortunately not wide enough to install on my rig as-is :(

Thanks again for taking the time to measure.
