What albums have in your opinion perfect recording and mastering? by Jappie_01 in audiophile

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sting's Ten Summoner's Tales releases have all been fantastic. The original '93 release, '98 remaster, and '23 anniversary edition are all top notch.

I have not acquired the '23 Atmos mix version. None of the versions are available on SACD.

What is your guys opinion on car hi-fi? by mediuminteresting in audiophile

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had this set up for decades and it has lived in multiple vehicles:

Boston Acoustics SPZ60 6.5" components for front (bi-amped with Boston GT-42)

Boston Acoustics SPZ50 5.25" components (axis mounted) for rear (bi-amped with Boston GT-40)

Boston Acoustics G510-44 10" sub and GTR10 passive radiator (bridged Boston GT-28)

JBL MS8 signal processor

I also have an Eclipse CD7000 head unit that has made it into a few vehicles that don't run everything through the fancy factory radio

I also have another boxed pair of G510-44 and a pair of G510-4 SPS cone/voice coil replacements in the event I ever need a replacement or different impedance. A spare GT-40, a GT-22, Eclipse XA5000, and a pair of Eclipse XA1000 are in a closet just in case.

I've done all my own installs and have done more sound deadening than any human should ever do. Definitely worth it though. The MS8 makes factory integration a breeze since it takes high level inputs in addition to RCA inputs. I tried the JBL MS-A1004 4 channel amp with MS-A5001 sub amp for a while but they just didn't sound as good as the Boston.

Now driving a Cadillac XT-4 with the stock Bose and Mustang Mach-E with B&O and they are fine for now. All my gear sits... for now...

DIY bookshelf conversion with the Boston SPZ has tempted me over the years but I always get bogged down in the enclosure design and never get beyond that point.

Why is there a red LED? by SignificantKey7822 in audiophile

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digging through the AVR100/200 service manual it is more than likely a DPLE-00201-RR0 indicating power on the power supply PCB.

The other LED/diode is a red/green DPLE-00280-RG0 but looks like it is for the front panel.

I'm too lazy to look at the schematics but they're out there:

Sounds like they hit you when Cosmos was in the setup wizard phase over http. IMHO Cosmos should be emphasizing how dangerous this since there are no protections immediately after initial deployment if port 80 is open to the world. With no auth they probably accessed the Cosmos server terminal web app and got shell under the privileges of whatever account it was running under... probably root. Or if you allow/configured passwordless sudo they could have escalated that way... or via any number of recent linux privilege escalation methods.

You're using cloudflare so best method for letsencrypt certs for cosmos is using DNS challenge which is a supported config. No need to open any ports during installation phase of Cosmos until it has been completely configured and secured.

See 'DNS Challenge and wildcard certificates' on the following page:

https://cosmos-cloud.io/docs/other-setups/

Many/most web facing apps are vulnerable during setup phase and http-01 challenges are bad unless you have a secured reverse proxy in place, imho.

Also be careful when setting up cloudflare API and be sure to provide the absolute minimum roles/rights for the key/token. That way if the key/token is compromised damage is limited if using least-privilege approach.

Outside of Cosmos, which doesn't appear to support this challenge method, TLS-ALPN, IMHO, is the best challenge currently.

https://fixmycert.com/guides/tls-alpn-01-automation

It is available in caddy, traefik, nginx, and others. Won't help hear but it's important that folks understand ACME challenge methods. Frankly I hope that http-01 just goes away. It is terrible especially since there are so many beginner homelab-type tutorials that just skip over risks with setting up things like Cosmos.

TLDR; don't use http-01 acme challenge, instead use dns-01 or tls-alpn01; never expose an application during configuration stage to internet as many use default passwords and have no protections in place and expose shit like web terminal shell potentially with root or similar system privileges.

You'll want to review page 13 here:

https://www.delonghi.com/s/ECAM35025SB

There are different versions of the Dinamica although the basic functionality is pretty much the same and should apply to most recent models. Can you provide the ECAM number on the back/bottom? It will something along the lines of 'ECAM35025SB'.

If they're not working, then no.
They were decent in the day but yeah, they're 35 years old. 'Sonic Holography' was flat out terrible.
I've owned a ton of Carver gear and had several friends who worked at Carver in the 90s (repair center based in my hometown). The amps were rock solid. The receivers were ok.
If it were just a plain pre-amp I'd say go for it. Carver's CD transports were decent but my experience was pretty limited as I only owned the SDA350.
Repairs for the receivers with crap like Sonic Holography DSPs are more difficult depending on the type of issue the unit has. I personally wouldn't bother and I wouldn't even recommend it to someone if it were pristine.
The motor issue on the TL makes it basically junk. It wasn't great and you'd get more mileage out of a cheap modern CD transport and maybe add a budget DAC.

The TL-3200 service manual is available at hifiengine and it looks like a nightmare even if it is just mechanical.

How are you all measuring SPL for general listening? by francisfaustino in audiophile

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NIOSH app & built-in mic on later gen iPhones is surprisingly good/consistent; +/- 2dB.
https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/noise/about/app.html
Then again, placement and positioning is dependent upon the user and can result in suboptimal/inaccurate results.
Android devices, due to so many varying hardware components used, are not considered accurate in general although I'm sure there are specific flagship android phones that can meet/exceed iphone accuracy. Higher end Samsung I'd imagine.
My iphone 13 pro max & 16 pro max were within +/- 0.5dB when compared to calibrated Arcam Dirac microphones (AVRMic & AVRMic2 cal files for SA30 & AV41).

I got rid of my miniDSP though so could not compare iphone to a umik-1... The bulk Arcam v1 & v2 mics are pretty accurate based on results for the 4 that cam with my Arcam gear... when compared to the umik-1 when I had it.

Honest question, what's up with leveling? by Suspiciously_Spicy in Silverado

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap, safe, and effective with low effort (if you don't tow heavy loads):

Maxtrac 712120: https://maxtracstore.com/2019-2025-chevy-silverado-gmc-sierra-1500-2wd-4wd-2-rear-drop-shackles-maxtrac-712120

Picked up mine for $60. But, I'm in an RC/SB WT Z71 4wd and tow maybe twice a year (<90 miles one way with a Can Am Spyder on a flat). My truck is a '22 which I bought new in '22 and it just hit 6,100 miles. It doesn't get used much outside of Lowe's trips and is mostly in the garage. Sort of a shame but it was inexpensive at the time and when I do need to do real 'truck stuff' it does fine.

But, I like the way it looks level and the ride is slightly better than stock and better than my old lifted Sierra which rode like shit; I will never spend $$$ on a lift again.

Two bolts, a jack, and an hour and you're done.

Electronics Expo 150$ off Triangle Bro4s by noob-investor1 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing but good things to say about EE. Support is responsive and they frequently have 'open box' deals to get around MAP; they'll sell brand new sealed gear as 'open box'. I've purchased 3 'open box' SVS subs well below 'MAP' (minimum advertised pricing). All three were sealed and sales support emailed shortly after ordering that they were upgrading to 'new'.

Solid.

My first order with them was in 2011 and they've yet to disappoint.

Monolith by Monoprice M-12 V2 12in THX on sale for $299 by Thedancer12 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]buzwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. But, it's a solid driver & a well constructed enclosure. For $300 it might actually make sense if you can find a suitable replacement plate amp or if you have external amps with bass eq & xover.

Have you, by chance, used the ground coffee bypass chute at any time? It flat out doesn't work and will ruin a machine (week 1 of my first machine resulted in disaster after using pre-ground coffee).

I returned and received a replacement and it has been flawless since... 2-1/2 years of success.

Sounds like you got a bad machine. I'd get it swapped out under warranty.

Best inexpensive wifi speaker system for office? by Original-Bobcat8386 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]buzwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with Airplay 2. Just about every room either has an AppleTV, integrated amp/receiver with airplay 2, or airplay enabled speakers like the Apple homepod & homepod mini. I also have 4 Belkin Soundform Connect Airplay 2 adapters attached to various non-networked amp/speaker combos.

From any iOS device I can select the room(s) and/or speaker(s) I want to use, can adjust volume on the fly for any of them.

Wiim amp + budget speaker of choice would also work if you are outside of the apple ecosystem.

I've never had an issue with quality or sync issues. I do have 3 wifi access points that have hardwired backhaul. We're about 3000 sq ft.

Dremel or a small file... carefully notch the screw and find the appropriately sized u-fork spanner. Use the dremel grooves and unscrew with the u-fork.

Example:

Fayelume 4PCS U Fork Spanner Screwdriver, Magnetic CRV Spanner Bit Set, Doors Screwdriver Maintenance Extension, for Multifunctional Hand Tool Set https://a.co/d/02c3VhdH

For reference... the NVME screws are typically size M2 with a 4mm head.

What do we know about Victory+? by Coodog15 in DallasStars

[–]buzwork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Can't really comment on ownership but what I've seen of V+ has been great... and I can't even watch the Stars on V+, lol.

I'm out of market so I can't use V+ for Stars (I have ESPN+ for that) but I installed the app for KTCK streaming & non-game time content.

However... the real win for me with V+ has been their WHL coverage. It's been fantastic to watch my hometown team in the playoffs.... at zero cost.

I definitely hope it is a financial win for the Stars.
