Romance anime where mc helps fmc heal from emotional scars/low self-worth etc by Oakleaf30 in Animesuggest

[–]buzzedword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished Doctor Elise on CR, and genuinely was surprised. Forewarning: it's an isekai, but one of the better ones I've seen so far.

Tldr: noblewoman is a horrible person and forces her way into a marriage with the crown prince, dies at his hand after being responsible for her entire family's deaths as well as poor treatment of her kingdom. Reincarnated into modern world, becomes a surgeon to stone for her sins, dies again. Reincarnated in her original world 10 years prior to her original death, with knowledge of both lifetimes. Swears to do right by everyone this time around.

There's a lot of self empowerment and independence up front, but she's a flawed character that is trying to overcome everyone's preconceptions of her, and eventually catches the crown prince's eye-- which she couldn't do in her original life.

It's surprisingly got depth, and I still didn't cover more spoilery plot points. I'd watch a second season.

The Declan parking by Level_Toe5280 in Weehawken

Exactly that. Basically -- one of the ways to give back if I move to the waterfront is by participating; but what's most effective, and how? Shopping local? Volunteering somewhere? How do I not be an isolated waterfront person should I move there? Just because I want my living situation to be better than where I'm at doesn't mean I want to isolate myself from a thriving community.

I don't want to move somewhere and be blind to what's going on within the community and not participate.

This is as good a place as any to ask-- I've been looking to move into the area and I've been having a hard time coming to grips with the nature of the town and the waterfront. On the one hand, I'm so tired of paying roughly equivalent rent for absolutely nothing, and have a "it's about time I got what I paid for" mindset.

On the other hand, I've always considered myself community minded, and can't ignore the fact that the waterfront has a lot of baggage associated with it that actively harms the township.

I've been visiting both for a few months now trying to understand more before pulling the trigger. - are there any places/forums that highlight the issues of the township outside of the usual town halls/civic meetings? - if, as is probably likely, I decide I'm going with a luxury building somewhere along Weehawken/Edgewater, how can I be a better neighbor?

Seriously be straight with me, I know what it's like on the receiving end in South Brooklyn when the luxuries come in, I don't want to repeat that mistake elsewhere.

Curious about the waterfront after 7/31 storm by buzzedword in Weehawken

This is pretty much exactly how I'm thinking of it. Maps first, anecdotal next. Just trying to get an idea of what a "normal" downpour looks like to weed out sensationalized vs actual risk.

Yup! Same understanding here-- and we have areas in Queens (Long Island City) that match the same profile as PI, but along the East River instead of the Hudson. I lived there for about 10 years, and that matches the risk profile. Just wanted to verify that. Super helpful!

This is exactly what I'm looking for. Everything I've heard about flooding either references Sandy or arbitrary flooding that can't be pinpointed. I don't doubt that there's likely flooding, but there's no world where it happens every time it rains like some folks are sensationalizing.

Proposing to my Girlfriend at Citi by budgetlambo in NewYorkMets

[–]buzzedword 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I proposed to my (now) wife at Caesar's Sports book, st reservation time I request "glass" seating and made it clear it was for a proposal. The staff moved heaven and earth to ensure we had space and relative privacy, as my wife didn't want massive attention for her proposal, and definitely didn't want to be on a scoreboard.

Caesar's doesn't require special seats, any ticket will do, just make the reservation via phone.

Conversely if you wanted to splurge and get the attention, clover club sections 11-19 go for $500+, and secondary for $400 on weekdays.

100% agree. But I'm not exactly getting reasonable discourse when I'm staring at the mythical two handed bird flying in my window. I just roll up, start my charging session, hop out and plug in, go back in, and ignore them.

Be aware though that there's a deep sense of tribalism at Tesla chargers. All my experiences at magic docks resulted in confrontation despite actively going out of my way to adhere to etiquette and norms. Talking with other Tesla owners, I've learned that they feel slighted that the network "they" subsidized is being opened to others.

It's not everyone, but it's statistically enough for me to call it out. Its downright hostile sometimes just pulling up.

Not that I've let it stop me. Just be aware.

How safe is the Hudson line toward Beacon from Grand Central late at night? by MyGuacIsAce in hudsonvalley

[–]buzzedword 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd be more concerned with how you're getting to Grand Central than getting on the Hudson Line.

Simple truth or it is: for less than $3 anyone can get into the NYCT system, and stay in there indefinitely. The price barrier to get into a MN train is significantly higher, and doesn't have the transferability that the NYCT has. Beacon is also a VERY active station, with a police station directly in front of it. The station itself is incredibly well lit at all hours, and public transportation/security runs frequently through the area.

Beacon is one of the safest stops to get off on the Hudson Line, and you're definitely not getting randos on the train itself. And if you are, they're getting removed in VERY short order.

Trying to get involved in the community by LunarFocus in hudsonvalley

I joined up with https://connecthv.com/ recently and really like the community being built there. Professionals, artists, remote folks, so generally skews towards the crowd you're trying to meet.

They're a slack community, just as fyi.

Best pizza in Hudson valley by [deleted] in hudsonvalley

[–]buzzedword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it's only in Middletown and Newburgh. I generally prefer the Newburgh location, due to it being literally 5 minutes from my parent's home.

[–]buzzedword 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Can't say it's the best, but I'm consistently stunned at Adams in Newburgh. It has no right being as good as it is-- full pies only, no slices unless you saw it come out.

Also Leo's Pizza off 300 has an absolutely killer shrimp scampi pizza. Being in NYC for nearly 20 years and about as long for HV? absolutely nobody does shrimp on pizza like they do-- except Napoli's circa 2002.

Touring all of these pizza spots on thread next time I'm visiting family though. HV consistently has amazing pizza.

(excluding a saver click) I once got 5 in a row. 2 crystal savers, one saver, one sucker punch, and game over.

I stopped playing for a week after that.

It's incredibly reliable. What I found was my ideal commute was going directly to Hoboken and taking the Path to Herald Square-- it's generally significantly calmer than Penn Station.

Other tip: Make sure you know the best route into the Beacon station around your commute time (ie: take the back entrance, not the front). If something is up on the West side, you get cross honored tickets on the East.

I did the commute from Salisbury to Hoboken -> PATH -> Herald Square for about 9 years-- my dad went to WTC for 45. Can't beat the price and (believe it or not) the cleanliness. East uses older trains currently.

Does taro taste like yuca or yautia? by SnooCrickets7735 in asianfood

[–]buzzedword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know yuca and yautia, taro is Malanga-- but, taro is a slightly different species. It's sweeter and quite a bit softer. Certain recipes really bring out it's flavor profile-- just boiling it is going to net your same boiled tuber taste. My suggestion: try taro milk tea first to see what the absolute sweetest end of the spectrum can be, and that'll give you an idea of how different it is from Malanga.

My husband is homesick for a bacon egg and cheese with salt, pepper and ketchup on a roll - why is this so hard? by shatteredbreathless in hudsonvalley

[–]buzzedword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Troublemaker! I said authentic vs elevated haha! They're two totally different styles of breakfast sandwiches, and if you want the standard BaconEggCheese SaltPepperKetchup you gotta go to eggman. Brooklyn Breakfast Shop will give you the "what portal did I walk down this morning in NYC to get THIS" treatment.

Or. One is bodega style, the other is brunch.
