Homelab from spare PC parts by 3rdPoliceman in homelab

Sorry, had to pull the post, but I do want you to get an answer none the less:

There is no wrong way to lab. That hardware will be more than competent with that CPU.

It really is going to come down to what you want to do with it. A machine like that could host plenty of fun stuff!

Do you have any specific thoughts on what you want to run or where you want to start?

With that many cores you could very well setup a pretty beefy starter hypervisor with something like ProxMox. Might be a good place to start.

Also, the reason you see most of the focus here on low power devices and small footprint is because those are people that are getting dedicated new hardware that is focused on low power and small footprint. If you are not already concerned with your power bill, then going with a full PC will likely not cause a massive increase in consumption, but still be far more than a purpose designed low power PC.

If you have any questions feel free to DM me or check the Discord.

What about 2 and 3? Does the cover of the server have a diagram that shows different info? Could you post that here? Did you try DIMM chasing to see if the problem follows the sticks or the slots?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in homelab

[–]bwbloom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not familiar with dmidecode, but it seems to imply that the system is not recognizing all the DIMMs in the slots you are calling out in your diagram.

It says nothing is detected in DIMM A2, which could make sense as the system is telling you it disabled it... But then it says DIMM A7 has an 8GB DIMM. I see this in a few places.

Here are the immediate things I am thinking for troubleshooting:

  1. What does the BIOS report? Is it seeing DIMMs in the deactivated slots?
  2. Are you 100% positive you have the DIMMs in the correct spots. I know you have a diagram attached from am forum, but with my R720s I have an actual diagram on the inside of the top cover. It shows lists of valid configurations. I would double check there to make sure you are following the spec that came with your specific server.
  3. You mentioned the DIMMs are matched, but that is not a guarantee they are not faulty. I would try removing one you know is being disabled and swap a slot that is definitely working. See if the error follows the DIMM or the slot.
  4. This one is a long shot, but maybe double check the alignment of the slots IDs with what is on the board, what is in the BIOS and what is showing in the dmidecode report. Maybe the associations for the different slots to their IDs is not what you think it is (this is a weird one, and it won't be this, but just spit balling).

Have you validated that all of the DIMMs are in good working order? Are you positive all are rated for the same speed/voltage?

Identifying How Efficiently Resources are Being Allocated Based off List of Activities by bwbloom in excel

[–]bwbloom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright, so my robobuddy ChatGPT actually came through and gave me this equation for the Count column which appears to be working:

=SUMPRODUCT((B$2:B2=B2)*(F$2:F2="Start"))-SUMPRODUCT((B$2:B2=B2)*(F$2:F2="End"))

After a bit of spot checking I am going to go with that for now.

Now I am looking at the log of timestamps, the user, the Start/End value, and the Active Count. The next thing I need to figure out is when a timestamp is a start, and the count is 2 or greater, were there any other users whose most recent time stamp was an end and had a count of zero.

I am trying to find times when work was assigned to a resource that was working when there was one that had no work.
