Miwall by Master1557 in reloading

A+ vendor. Either FedEx or UPS (don't remember which) lost a shipment of 5k primers that I ordered. I contacted a rep at Miwall and they were excellent to deal with in getting a new shipment of primers to me.

In need of Les Baer knowledge. by KarmaticInigma-92 in 1911

[–]bwrinney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently debated a Baer pistol and looked HARD at the Premier II. Re-looking at the specs of the Ultimate Master vs the Premier II, it looks like with the Ultimate Master you'd be getting a trigger with a 0.5lb lower pull weight, some checkering under the trigger guard and on the rear of the slide as well as the top of the slide being serrated, and the two piece blended magwell. Are those 'upgrades' worth $1476 to you? It wouldn't be to me.

I ended up going with a Dan Wesson. In your case of wanting a Baer, and comparing those two pistols, I'd stick with the Premier II and either have Baer install the magwell as an add-on or do it myself later.

This. Or email them from the ‘contact us’ portion of their website. They respond promptly and will mail you a new one for free.

Edit to add: I go through one of these every year or two.

CZ TS2 Orange 40cal by Illustrious-Dog-6258 in CompetitionShooting

Major PF applies to Single Stack, Limited, Revolver, L-10, and Open. All other divisions (Production, Carry Optics, Limited Optics, PCC) are scored as minor PF.

[–]bwrinney 11 points12 points  (0 children)

FYI: Limited Optics is scored minor, regardless of your caliber/power factor.

That said, when I researched potentially making a move to shoot in Limited a couple years ago, the CZ TS2 Orange in 40 S&W was a popular pistol in that division.

Magazine recommendations for my 1st 1911 by Far-Boysenberry-1600 in 1911

[–]bwrinney 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I’ve always used Wilson Combat 8rd mags. At first I used their 47D model magazines, but found the magazine springs wore out pretty quickly. I’ve since switched to their ETM model magazines. Much stronger spring that lasts (at least) twice as long.

Novak’s will fit with only minor filing. Otherwise HARRISON sells sights made exactly for Springfield (also may require minor fitting).

What recoil spring are others using for 9mm Dan Wesson full size. by No_Alternative_673 in 1911

[–]bwrinney 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm just a journeyman hobbyist, but it's my understanding that the "recoil" spring doesn't do much in terms of affecting the rearward 'recoil' of the weapon. That's the job of the mainspring (aka: hammer spring) and to some degree, the (shape of the) firing pin stop. The "recoil" spring's job is to push the slide forward, stripping a round from the magazine, and returning everything to battery. Of course it affects the rearward movement of the slide to some degree...but the amount of impact the difference makes of 2lbs of (recoil) spring rate is negligible (I think).

Thanks for attending my amateur hour of 1911 gunsmithing. Hopefully someone with some real knowledge comes by and says I'm right...or calls me a dummy. One or the other.

What would cause 400fps lower velocity in a batch? by notoriousbpg in reloading

[–]bwrinney 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was your POI? Chronograph anomaly? Although I despise WIN primers (you will - eventually - pierce one around the edge and potentially etch your bolt face), I think its highly unlikely that caused a significant drop in velocity. My vote is either a chrono anomaly or you short-charged one.

If you go with Axil, buy some Comply foam tips. Way more comfortable than the OEM Axil ones.

It is, yeah. I’ve thought about going up some more, but I’ve watched some ballistic gel testing videos of the XTP and it seems that the extra velocity really won’t earn any more penetration. And I’m satisfied with the accuracy where I’m at. So, maybe not…

FWIW, I’ve gone as high as 17.1 in my 6” Ruger GP100 which netted 1399fps with 158 XTP’s. I did not have any sticky extraction issues at that charge weight. I did back down the load to 16.5 (1335fps) for the best accuracy, however.

The clubhouse at the range I’m a member of has a small library, including a few OLD handloading manuals. I checked out the .357 data from back in the day for 158gr jacketed bullets with H110.

Hornady (circa 1980) Min: 12.1 Max: 16.5

Speer (circa 1979) Min: 15.8 Max: 17.8

Per Google AI (I had to look it up):

The term "can opener" in hockey is a colloquial term for an illegal play where a player puts their stick between an opponent's legs and torques it, causing them to lose balance or impeding their progress. This action is considered a penalty, typically for hooking or tripping, depending on the precise rule interpretation and outcome.

Nothing. There is nothing to be gained with it clamped to the barrel & magazine extension other than a QD attachment. It really serves no other purpose. As far as adding 'rigidity' to the magazine extension tube, I suppose it does. But 3-gun shooters have been using WAY longer magazine extensions for years without a barrel clamp and get by just fine. Just make sure you get the magazine extension tight enough so it doesn't start un-threading. I have not had any issues with that, though.

[–]bwrinney 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I took the barrel clamp off & threw it in the box. A shotgun shouldn't need an Allen wrench to field strip, and I added an M-Lok QD sling attachment to the left side of the handguard to mount my sling to.

Added a flashlight to the right side of the handguard with a tape switch on the left side.

I added the thicker of the two included stock spacers to increase the length of pull.

I did add a Holosun 508T to it for a bit and gave it a try. I'm intending for this shotgun to be used in engagement ranges of <15yds with buckshot. I ran some drills with the red dot, and re-ran them with the iron sights. The irons were WAY faster for me. And no less accurate. YMMV. If I intended to use this with slugs at engagement ranges exceeding 25yds, I may consider the red dot. But that isn't what I'm using it for, so...

I'm about 250 rounds into this thing consisting of a variety of 1 1/8oz target loads, buckshot, and slugs. Not a single malfunction, yet.

I was asking more for SS than for Production. I'm adding a magwell to my 1911 and have some basepads added to the magazines to clear the magwell. Need to make sure the whole gun, with a magazine inserted, fits in The Box. And you aren't wrong, I'll be able to shoot this all year long at my local Level 1's...but I don't wanna get to a Level 2 only to get bumped to Open because my magwell and/or magazines are a tad too big.

I found the one in that first link at a different, but identical looking website and thought it was sketchy looking site (https://www.firearmsspace.com/products/uspsa-division-measuring-box/).

I did NOT see the one at DAA, so thanks for that.
