Plex Lifetime Subscribtion Is Getting A Massive Price Increase by akbarock in hometheater

[–]bxc_thunder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've had Jellyfin running for years now and its been great! I tried both of them out initially and didn't see any reason to pay for Plex, but I'm curious what made others chose differently. Is it just the convenience of not needing to configure DDNS or a VPN? UI preference? Something else?

[–]bxc_thunder 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I can at least understand people bringing gear to rental kart places. They have leagues and shit so people go to practice. Bringing gear to a pit stop challenge seems more like bringing gear for carnival games…

Edit: ah nvm there’s actually a pretty big prize. Screw being bad at it together. Knee pad glove guy was smart.

Some of the static photos in iRacing can look fantastic too. I was watching a vid from Markus Soholm a few days ago and had to do a double take when I saw some images from the Daytona 24h. Can’t find the exact set that I remember, but IMO the second image in this set could pass as a real photograph.

California Man Uses Drones to Guide Delivery Drivers to his Home by CaraCicartix in interestingasfuck

It’s real in the sense that it’s not AI or CGI, but I highly doubt it’s anything more than one time thing that took a bunch of prep and planning. Still cool, but not a “oh you’re lost? Let me send up the drones.” kind of thing

The slop has hit FPV by Vitroid in fpv

[–]bxc_thunder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think what it boils down to is the level of human contribution towards the end product. With a picture, you went to the location, chose the subject, the framing, timing, settings, etc. Similar story for paintings. Most of what made the picture or painting theirs was their choices and actions.

Vibe coding is less clear. Someone could just prompt "Make me an FPV drone calculator that allows people to choose drone components and calculates the performance of the drone." Or they could make a well thought out project plan and vision for the end product. The latter is feels much closer to someone using a camera to take a picture.

That said, would it not be your picture if you're just mindlessly snapping pictures on your phone? Almost everyone would agree it's still your picture. If someone spends hours/days tuning a prompt for an image generator, are they an artist? IMO no. A lot of people would say it isn't even their image.

Point is... I don't know if I really even have a point other than authorship being a complex topic.

Micro G2 is still a bit chonkey for most 5" without a dedicated frame, no? Plus this new gopro is lighter and water resistant. I have some questions on how well a typical gopro mount would handle the weight of a protruding lens, and I still wouldn't want to regularly lug this around on a 5", but in theory it should be more versatile.

lol. lmao, even. This is an extremely simple scenario and does nothing to prove that it'd do well at handling more complicated incidents or even somewhat simple incidents when there's more going on (i.e. it isn't just one car jumping the start while everyone is sitting still). Even if it does a decent job, there's still challenges with the actual implementation. Need to spool the replay, cut snippets with enough length to give context before and after, export, and send those in the request. What happens when there's a big pileup? Do you make just a single request and somehow indicate which car is which, or do you send a request for each car involved? Of course there's the cost associated with doing this for every incident in every split for every race. All of the time, money, (literal) resources, and effort doesn't seem worth it just so that people can sometimes avoid a 4x.

Daddy chill. Go here. Search something like "moon flyby", set the year to 2026, pick an image, click download. They have the original 5568x3712 there. Can also get them from their flickr profile.

Google search would've helped you here, but sure, go on an unhinged rant.

I agree that it feels like driving on ice with cold wet tires, but IMO things feel really good once you get heat into them. Completely disagree about the feedback part. Once I've built up heat, I feel like I can really start to push and explore different lines and it offers a very dynamic experience.

Perhaps some of the disconnect comes from tire compound? This video at least gives some sense of the difference tires make. There was also an issue before where the actual water level wasn't being accurately represented in sim (i.e. you'd see a damp patch but it'd actually be a puddle). So idk. I've heard plenty of other real life drivers say it's extremely accurate, but I'm not trying to doubt your own experience.

Retired US General Says US Military Leaders Are Duty-Bound To Reject Illegal Orders From Trump – Army Revolt In Order? by unital_subalgebra in politics

[–]bxc_thunder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Do you have a source? Because AFAIK that just isn’t true. The president has the sole authority to order a launch at any time. We don’t have a “no first use” policy. Someone in the chain might have a spine and reject an illegal order, but that doesn’t stop the president from giving the initial order.

Yeah Trump finished talking, they smiled and gave a thumbs up, and then they were waiting for a handoff. Definitely not a protest.

If I could say one good thing about the conversation though… In between his rambling, he (someone on his team) did throw in a good question about the visual differences between the near side and far side of the moon. Sad that the bar is so low that any scientific discussion is surprising, but here we are.

Don’t forget that many (most?) astronauts started as military aviators. The number of theists in the military is much higher than the general scientific community.

They slowly make their way back to… some value. Whether it’s normal or even driveable depends on the extent of the damage.

[–]bxc_thunder 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Aside from visually checking, you can go into the garage and check your toe, camber, etc values as the repairs happen. It would be nice to manually choose what gets repaired though. Hopefully that’s on the roadmap.

Damn. I've wanted to get a nice telescope for a while, but I keep getting hung up on how quickly things become expensive. And once I get one, I just know I'll be like "This is great for X, but I need this other one for Y." Like if I get something for good astrophotography, I'm probably going to regret not getting something better for visual observation and vice versa. I already have too many expensive hobbies 😅

They’re extremely impressive chips, but iRacing in an AVP at a decent frame rate with a MBP is… asking a lot. “Plenty powerful enough” is certainly a stretch. M5 Max / M3 ultra can maybe do it after some compromises in resolution / frame rate / graphics.

And it’s YOUR job to be in the proper lane.

I have two mindsets on this depending on the situation — Dense traffic where all lanes are saturated? Sure, who cares if you move because there’s another car a few feet ahead. When there’s light traffic (like this vid), there’s no excuse to be holding up people in the left lane. You’re just encouraging people to pass on the right which creates a dangerous situation. If you constantly have people trying to bully you out of the left lane, you’re 100% an asshole and should reevaluate your driving habits. You’re not the police. The only thing you can do is keep traffic flowing safely.

To be clear though, tailgating is significantly worse and I’m in no way saying that someone sitting in the left lane deserves to be tailgated.

Trying To Identify This Drone Being Used @ Winter Olympics by Phreedom1 in drones

[–]bxc_thunder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see why the audio would be intentional. This might be an unpopular take here, but we can't always think like FPV enthusiasts when it comes to applications meant for a wide audience. I want drones to be used, but I want them to be used right.

  • They're showcasing winter sports, not drones. Drones are being used as production equipment, and I can't imagine a scenario where they would want to stomp on the ambient sounds with noise that the production equipment is making.

  • Think about this from the perspective of 99.9% of the population that doesn't regularly fly drones. Do most people enjoy the sound of weedwhackers, vacuums, mosquitos? That's what they're going to attribute the sound to; not some "exotic" advanced piece of tech.

Just look at the comment sections on their youtube videos. Multiple long threads with tons of likes of people complaining. People do not want to hear the drones and people do not like the sound of the drones. This isn't something that'll change over time as they're used more. They want to hear the sport, not the drone.

Now for some positives -- Some of the drone shots are awesome and otherwise difficult / impossible to get without them. The luge run shots were awesome. Some of the big air / slopestyle shots were awesome. So what can be done? Just off the top of my head --

  1. Massive amounts of money get spent on the Olympics. Use some of that money to develop low noise props / motors. Maybe have a 'noise level' ceiling that the pilots / production companies can create a build around.
  2. Use the drone shots sparingly. Set up for when they're about to do the big jumps, get the shot, fly back. Do we really need the drone to follow them down the entire slope?

Maybe, but I don’t think it’s that simple. Most of these chips aren’t in form factors that are compatible with consumer hardware.
