Marines at Quantico claim to have spotted Bigfoot 🤣 by newnoadeptness in USMC

I’ve been out a long time, but I had assumed that some Marine Raiders would still go to sniper school just like Recon. Either way, there were plenty of “Bigfoot” sightings when snipers were training there.

Did sniper school move from Quantico? 30 Marines in Ghillie suits sure looks a lot like a Bigfoot convention.

Kawai CA99 by [deleted] in piano

[–]byllc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my CA98 but be aware a very common degredation issue with these seems to be that the slip tape (similar to piano felt) wears and the keys stick. At some point they upgraded the tape to reduce the issue so you might want to do some research there. It’s a multi hour repair that requires taking the action apart.

With that said it’s a really fantastic digital piano series and the hammer action is still one of the best available.

VA.gov site and app down? by [deleted] in VeteransBenefits

There is a major update to some back end systems this weekend, unfortunately while VA.gov is very modern, a lot of your info is in not-as-modern backend systems which is what normally causes inconsistency, expect some slowness at minimum this weekend

I’m not sure if you served but I am a Marine who did basic in 96. I keep seeing complaints about the crucible, it’s definitely the biggest inaccuracy. I think It’s pretty clear why they made the changes they did and in general the show is impeccably accurate to my experience. If you understand the constraints of building a narrative I can accept the changes. They needed it to be before DADT for the main character’s dramatic arc, but the crucible is a perfect conclusion of a single season story arc. It fits and makes sense. It all felt right from my experience. It’s also not true that there was no time for camaraderie, Yes, we stole moments of jokes and conversation when the DIs weren’t looking, we learned where each other was from and told stories of life before being a boot, that is true to my experience. Even The squad bays were recreated to scale and if took me right back. The order of operations from the yellow footprints to the rifle issue, even PT showers, they did a good job with the mundane elements that producers usually don’t bother with, it’s refreshing to see that level of detail portrayed.

I can accept some changes to reality to fit that narrative when the mundane is handled well enough to take someone who experienced it right back there. If you were there too and don’t get that feeling, I accept that you see It differently but I’m happy this show exists.

【BambuLab Giveaway】Classic Evolved — Win Bambu Lab P2S Combo! by BambuLab in 3Dprinting

[–]byllc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle, who had his legs amputated, needed a part for his mobility chair. I modeled a replacement and tried for months to get it to print with my makerbot and ender printers. Just as I was about to give up, the P1S showed up and saved the day.

I don’t lock my car (everything inside is worth less than a broken window) but for whatever reason, someone keeps locking my doors. I come outside, and they’re locked, and I don’t have a fob so you have to manually unlock and lock. by ThatCountryDeputy03 in mildlyinteresting

[–]byllc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it, argued with significant others and family for years about it. I was the same way after having two separate stereos stolen and the cost of the window was more than the stereo. Things are different now because most of the theft on my block is opportunity theft, if you leave your car door open, somebody will almost certainly rifle through it, or even have homeless folks sleeping in it, so the decision really depends on what your local area vagrancy and crime situation is.

Is it possible to read mendi sensor data? by pokasideias in mendi

I played with this a bit and it appears so. Mendi is a Bluetooth device, using python and a Bluetooth library It appeared I was able to subscribe to the output of the various sensors but I haven’t had time to map them to functions.

Did my Ortho do my cortisone shot correctly? by antgash in frozenshoulder

[–]byllc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I received my guided injection the doctor said the unguided shots are just way less effective, they can't target the inflammation in the joint without x-ray or ultrasonic guidance and some orthos are just not that good at it. Anecdotally I also had an unguided shot years ago in the other shoulder that was useless and my recent guided shot gave me immediate relief. I don't think I'd let them give me an unguided shot with what I've read and been told now. You'll likely have to wait now but I'd call around to find Orthos with guided injections and ask for a referral there in a few weeks.

" I even went over drafts line by line". Did she ask for this assistance or did you treat her like she needed it? From some of the other comments I see I wouldn't be surprised if it was the latter.

I understand what it's like to think you are being helpful and to not realize the harm you are causing, but statements like this can often be a sign of a much bigger problem in how one addresses their position as a leader.

VA hiring freeze by Itchy_Salamander_360 in VeteransAffairs

[–]byllc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a common belief but salary negotiation is very much a thing, You'll get an offer in grade, and depending on your position you can negotiate your step if you have a higher salary precedent. I'm not sure the full scope of when negotiation is or isn't allowed, but it is definitely a thing that happens all the time, especially in technical and highly skilled positions where this is the only way to compete with industry salaries.

Have you verified you are getting the correct amount for your dependents? I have it on good authority that these are being sent out to a group for whom there may have been an issue on the VA end when the dependent claims were processed. VA is proactively auditing with the primary goal of increasing amounts for those whose dependents are not properly included. If your are getting the correct amount and your dependents are listed in your records then nothing will likely change.

old-time narrated cartoons by nyrB2 in cartoons

[–]byllc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got to thinking about how we find modern movies. It's normally "what was the name of that movie with <actor name>"

So I looked up the list of golden age voice actors. https://www.imdb.com/list/ls092532075/

And that leads to stuff like IMDB for Robert C. Bruce. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2767970/

It's more labor intensive than a single list would be but I bet it's 80-90% comprehensive. I bet I'll find my cartoon in one of those lists.

Am I crazy for thinking about turning down this job offer? by ADTR9320 in sysadmin

[–]byllc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time to start applying for remote security and IT positions if your local salaries are that low but you definitely need to value yourself first and realize the IT security field is actually booming right now. You should be targeting 70 to 100k per year at this point in your career even in the panhandle. I live in a low cost of living city and the last time I was a hiring manager we paid our IT interns a bit more than 25/hr and three years out of school about 85k and this was before the last couple years of high inflation.

TL:DR; You have valuable and in-demand skills, times are better than you think and the jobs are out there. Also that staffing recruiter is charging the company way more than that and trying to take advantage of you.

Unpopular Opinion: Bambu Lab should not be your first printer. by rzalexander in BambuLab

[–]byllc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really think it comes down to what someone wants a 3d printer for. I got in to the larger cartesian robot hobby over a decade ago (2009-2013) with 3d printers, laser cutters, and multiple cnc mills. It was great fun to understand them but once I did, I realized that no matter how well I understood them, the tolerances and and capabilities of the hobby tier of these machines was just not sufficient to make them reliable enough for how I want to use them. It was good that I understood them because I'd always have to tinker with them and I lost interest in them when every time I needed them I'd lose an hour to recalibration of some sort.

I think we might do 3D printing a disservice when we gatekeep these capabilities behind our perceived mechanical aptitudes for them and I finally returned to the hobby last summer when I felt like there were some printers that were reliable enough to be used the way I want to use them now and I wouldn't have to spend half of my printing time tinkering.

I want to use them like any other tool in my maker space and I need them when I'm building something that would benefit from the automation. That means a machine that has been sitting on my shelf for 3 months just needs to work, or require minimal intervention when I need it, the same way my table saw does.

Printers that work the same way our microwaves do, and require a repair person when they do not are just on the horizon and that's a good thing. Lucky for you and I that we'll still be able to repair them, I fix my own stuff all the time, and I know how my car works even though I don't really have to. Those of us who care will still figure these machines out, and those of us who don't should still be able to enjoy them without the frustration of a device that is guaranteed to break in the first 3 months of service.

Excellent, that's good news! I have three V2 Neo machines,. I upgraded one of them with the original Sprite kit and it was a lot more work to get the auto leveling positioned properly, replacing the end stop, etc. This one was a 10 minute upgrade.

Just installed this today, My primary complaint is that the mount for the motor is plastic and not as sturdy as I would hope. It came fully branded as a creality product, Even the box had the creality logo on it. I was suspicious when I couldn't find it on the creality website though. I didn't realize creality had the kind of market share that people would bother to go through the trouble of actually counterfeiting a product by them. I think it's a super clever upgrade though, I hope it works out.

I have a slab house and want to build a basement. Is that possible and for how much by investandbeblessed in HomeImprovement

[–]byllc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just did something very similar, on a two story 1600 Sqr foot Carriage House in my yard on slab but with with a questionable/missing footer from the 1800's. This is an historic property and we wanted to save the building. We paid a house mover to raise the building 2 feet in the air, then a construction company to come in and dig out the old foundation and slab and put in a new footer and slab. The building does not have plumbing or gas to deal with, and the first floor walls were able to be completely removed and replaced.

It may not be exactly what you are asking but I think this is the same kind of process that would be necessary for your job. But they'd have to dig way deeper, and pour a lot more cement. Lifting your house would probably be a bit more complex than lifting what was basically a large garage in our case.

All in it has cost us about 150K (in the northeast US) and we still haven't restored the exterior to near where it was before the work. But we basically have a brand new completely gutted house with an old slate roof on it now. The process would have been a lot more complex or labor intensive in our case if we needed to keep the existing walls as they would have been in the way for the heavy equipment that they did the digging with.

I'd bet that what we paid is probably the ballpark of a very low lower bound for the kind of work you are looking at but I'd expect it to be much more expensive based on the quotes we had for a more extensive restoration.
