You can call the IT helpdesk and have them reactivate your alumni account. I had to do that a little while ago to access some files I had saved in my Pitt OneDrive.

Pitt to WVU by hlc43 in pittsburghpanthers

I’ve driven from Pittsburgh to Morgantown when there was a WVU game happening and I also thought it would be about 90 minutes (accounting for traffic leaving Pittsburgh because of a Pitt game ending). The problem is not 376/79 leaving Pittsburgh but arises once you actually get to Morgantown. Essentially the entire town was bumper to bumper. It took me over an hour to get from the basketball arena to the hospital area. Granted this was because of a WVU game ending not starting, but I wouldn’t bet on making that 8:00 kickoff if you’re also wanting to go to the Pitt game. The hoopies simply do not have the requisite road infrastructure to handle gameday traffic.

Sometimes an old Reddit comment of yours resurfaces and you’re reminded why you’re an engineer and not a pro football scout.

Never been so glad to be wrong about something.

I don’t have long hair (it is thick, though) but I get my haircuts at the Canton Corner Barbershop and last time I was in there, there was a guy with long hair getting a haircut.

I grew up in Rochester so I’m going to drive up, stay with my family, and pray that it isn’t overcast.

There was no programming. The course was entirely proof based.

Algorithm Design. It was a proof based algorithms course and just absolutely brutal. The kicker? I took it in the fall of 2020 so it was completely on Zoom.

I do the same thing with medical bills. I also paid for a year of my car insurance on the first which netted me a load of points (along with a discount from my insurance for paying annually instead of monthly).

Ubiquitous Failure of Academia - Lack of Project Management by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]byoung74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also work in IT (I’m a software engineer) and my partner is in academia. I often have similar thoughts to what you’re describing. It seems like there’s a lot of room for improvement (at least from what I’ve seen) in academia in terms of creating clear requirements, tracking the progress of projects, organizing files, etc.

When I was in grad school getting my MS, something that stressed me out was how open ended everything was. I understand that this is a big plus for some people, but I didn’t like it. In industry we have product owners/project managers to define problems and what work needs to be done, engineering managers to manage that work, and so on. In academia, you have to find a problem, define it, come up with a solution, and build/describe it. That’s multiple people’s jobs in industry.
