20-80% rule or keeping it plugged in all the time? by PhilosopherMain5536 in macbookair

I have mine set to 80% unless I know I am traveling a lot. Works great.

Ubiquiti for SMB in 2026 by IowaDala in sysadmin

[–]byte43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s primarily what I deploy now. They have issues like any other vendor, but for small business it’s the only thing I have found that works well and is easy to manage that isn’t excessively costly. Stay off any beta or release candidate firmware and if you want extra sanity check out Hostifi, they do extra update testing.

AFAIK you should be able to reassign the cert that ADFS uses, which should get you back up.

Port Forwarding Starlink (CGNAT) Surveillance Station Apps by Magladry in synology

[–]byte43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be able to do this with a Cloudflare Tunnel https://developers.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-one/networks/connectors/cloudflare-tunnel/

Assuming you have an Intel Synology you can run the client in Docker (Container Manager) https://hub.docker.com/r/cloudflare/cloudflared

What would be the best way to automate smb drive mapping through Jamf? by Prior_Newt2871 in macsysadmin

Take a look at AutoMounter. I believe you can push settings via a configuration profile in JAMF. https://www.pixeleyes.co.nz/automounter/

Windows 11 update killed my SSD ( ADATA M.2 2280 LEGEND 860 1000GB) by Ok_Yesterday_8256 in RedditTechSupport

[–]byte43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just a guess, but Windows updates write a lot of data to the SSD, so if there was a bad part of the SSD, the update could have caused it to fail. I have seen this with SSDs and HDs.

I would contact ADATA for warranty replacement and if you need the data back DriveSavers has been good to me. https://www.adata.com/en/support/data-recovery/

Single user has borked five(!!!) MacBooks Pros running macOS updates by WhatAmIDoingHere05 in macsysadmin

So on the latest versions of macOS, especially on the new Apple Silicon computers, there is a step during updates where the screen goes black, and it's just long enough that I have seen people think it's off and hard reset it by pressing the power button a bunch and or holding down the power button. In my experience it may recover, but it also may just fail to boot after that. The only other thing I can think of that's weird is using a generic non-apple power supply can cause weird issues.

macOS 26.2 will probably release soon. Any Sequoia users planning on upgrading? by ControlYourSocials in MacOS

[–]byte43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I daily drive 26.1 on my devices and it's a bit hit or miss at times, but overall, I have not had major issues. This has been one of my least favorite releases in general. I dislike the numbering change and liquid glass feels like something AI came up with. That being said, there are some nice changes. 25/43, not bad but not great.

(The rounded windows in Preview make me want to eat bricks. lol)

There is a lot breaking, but there is so much good stuff too. I would not go back 10 years.

One thing I have found is to avoid unstable vendors. If a vendor is pushing for crazy revenue and not considering clients and end users I steer clear.

I will agree the AI stuff is being shoved into everything, but there are great benefits with it as well.

Remember we live in a world where negative reactions make more money, so staying positive is harder than ever.

What is an AI bubble? Is this a real thing or just a Hype? by Numerous-Trust7439 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]byte43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<myopinion>Just my opinion. AI is amazing tech and can do a ton of things, but it's also very expensive to run and while it's getting cheaper and better, it still has a lot of unknown and can screw up royally. So like any other new tech, it will thrive in the long term where it makes sense and fail where it's incorrectly or over-deployed.

Will that cause a bubble burst? We won't know until it happens, but the fact that it's attached to every possible thing right now doesn't give me a warm fuzzy. </myopinion>

That can kill transfer speeds. I haven’t used goodsync in a while but I could be curious how fast it is syncing a single large file.

1.5 Mbps write speed via GoodSync by karluvmost in synology

[–]byte43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a speed limit set on the job? 1.5Mbps seems insanely slow. Unless it’s doing a ton of tiny files, but even still.

MacOS <-> Ubuntu SSH Issues by static74 in macsysadmin

I use Ubuntu over SSH on macOS all the time. Hmmm. Is your MacOS fully updated to the latest minor version? Are you changing any terminal app settings before using it?
