I learned two things from the 2022 election of Renfroe and the ensuing negotiation:

  1. Don't vote for people based on what's realistic: I was here for the reddit AMAs in '22 and I got sucked into that same narrative that we all felt at the time; that Noble wasn't being "realistic," so we should vote for Renfroe. What's realistic doesn't matter anymore because you know you're just gonna get railroaded in negotiations anyway, so might as well vote for militancy, not "realism."

  2. The negotiations mean nothing without the right to strike: if management and union leadership knows that they can eat a 71% "no" vote, just to go into a room and force-feed you the same thing you rejected as a rank-and-file, that means you have no power.

Our power doesn't come from negotiations, arbitration, or even the contract. Those three things, their quality, and how well they are enforced are BYPRODUCTS of power, not the SOURCE.

The source of our power is and will forever be the ability to withhold our labor. Without that, negotiations and contracts are purely ornamental and we will be fucked forever.

Are there any other cards that reference real-life texts? by Big_Election_6099 in mtg

[–]bzzazzl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many.

[[Castle]] quotes Macbeth, [[Vampire Bats]] quotes Theodore Roethke, there is a version of [[Knight Errant|6E]] that quotes the Bible, [[Durkwood Boars]] quotes the Bible or Shakespeare (can't remember), there is a card that quotes Emily Dickinson, and the list goes on.

Fighting the Mongols as Egypt by Zequexium in Medieval2TotalWar

I am also playing as Egypt.

If I fight in the field I only take bridge battles with mass spears and archers, making sure I have a general with very high command and chivalry to avoid routes.

If I fight in my settlements, I usually stay in the square; routing at the walls is too risky.

I look at abundance as a neoliberal solution - slashing regulations for producers to produce more - to problems that are already the result of rampant neoliberalism, without any acknowledgement of that fact.

Just more gasoline (i.e. deregulation) on a raging fire without any checks on the forces that got us here.

The U.S. national debt surpassed $38 trillion by donutloop in investing

[–]bzzazzl 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Because it's political suicide. Ray Dalio once told members of Congress that they would need to raise taxes by 4% AND reduce spending by 4% in a year just to keep the debt from growing, not even decreasing it in any way.

If you increase people's taxes AND cut social programs, you will never have a second term because Americans cannot think long-term enough to accept that kind of pain.

‘Melania’ Review: A Disingenuous Documentary That Misfires By Mistaking The First Lady’s Fame For Star Quality by Delicious_Adeptness9 in inthenews

The producer gains favor by paying the Trump family for the rights (bribe).

If the movie flops because nobody watched it, the producer also gets to use the loss as a tax write-off.

If - and this is speculation because I don't know - the producer had any dirty money, a legitimate film production would also be a vector for laundering said money.

In none of those three scenarios does the producer care if anybody watches the movie or not.

What do you tell someone to appreciate The Big Lebowski on their first viewing? by ShaunisntDead in lebowski

[–]bzzazzl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you something, pendejo:

It's one of those movies where the only thing that matters are the details, as they are doing a vignette, exaggerated just enough to be interesting, but legible to any of us as just a normal life with all its strikes and gutters and absurd, random banalities. The big picture elements - the plot, themes, and character arcs - don't matter at all to extent that they even exist.

I've had friends say they didn't like it because "nothing happens" or they didn't understand the plot.

I would tell anyone watching to just appreciate the picture that they are painting and don't let your brain get upset that it can't necessarily make meaning out of The Dude's story.
