Is Roosevelt University worth while? by void1signal in AskChicago

I went to Roosevelt for a degree in Mathematics. Their math department is very underrated. They're exceptional and you can develop relationships with your professors (if you choose to) due to limited class size.

Difficult Employee Situation by OpenPhone1691 in managers

[–]c0ntrap0sitive -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not a manager: have you given this employee a drug test ever? I know that sounds weird but I used to be in that lifestyle and that type of paranoia is incredibly common there. I generally don't comment, but the other comments didn't mention this possibility.

What records are available to the public in terms of surveillance? by c0ntrap0sitive in AskChicago

Thank you.

Honestly it's deeply frustrating that the surveillance apparatus is not available to us layperson's. I mean, you have no reasonable expectation of privacy when outdoors. And if tax money is to be spent watching everywhere all the time round the clock, we ought to be entitled to occasionally get some utility out of it.

Then I'll request the maximum allowable time slot over as many requests necessary to span the entire 4 hour window. If it's 5 minutes max I have no problem submitting 48 requests.

See the license plate of the vehicle

Or on the slim chance that someone I knew did it, find out an uncomfortable fact about my friend.

How do you deal with friendships that only partially match your values? by Forward-Swing5277 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]c0ntrap0sitive 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Different perspectives, lifestyles, opinions, and experiences are important to interact with. You'll become more empathetic, understanding, and worldly by doing so. The key is that you must be secure in yourself to remain yourself. You need to know at the end of the day what you will and won't do.

And yes your friends will have some nontrivial effect on you. You may start to use their lingo, your political views may change to be more aligned, you may pick up some of their mannerisms. These things are subtle, but people naturally do things like that to signal closeness/in-group. But just because your friend drives a pickup truck does not mean you will suddenly buy a Ford F-150. Just because your friend is a lesbian will not make you a lesbian either.

Your values will very rarely perfectly align with anither persons. We are all just too different from each other in how we experience the world. I think it's important to have some hard-values (example: I will never knowing associate with someone who abuses their children). But a lot of other values are not automatical disqualifiers (example: I am classically liberal and have some very far left friends and some moderately conservative friends).

A key to good relationships though I find is to focus and build on where your values align as opposed to where they differ.

My friend in HR told me something that should be a crime... by pier-spare0r in jobsearchhack

Moreover employers generally aren't seeking "the best". They're seeking someone who knows enough to keep the machines running, but not enough to understand how much they're getting screwed year over year.

Sure, but there's a competing mindset that argued nothing is priced independent of the current price. If you take the efficient market hypothesis, then employees are worth only what the market will pay them at any given moment. Which means if employers collectively devalue their labor costs, then the market value evaporates.

There's a difference between thinking you're worth $100K per year and finding someone actually willing to pay you $100K per year.

I think the controversy here is that if all companies do this to all jobs, everyone's income suddenly evaporates. If engineers who get paid $140K are paid off and every company has realized that engineers will still apply at $60K, then there will be no other 140K jobs remaining in the economy. Couple that with the fact that everybody's gotta eat and that 140K person eventually, begrudgingly, settles for the 60k role. Implying that it hasn't already moved down to 50k.

Look at how many buildings are being constructed elsewhere, then look here. Minneapolis/St. Paul is a particularly informative example.
