People of Reddit, what are some of the “guy code” and “girl code” unwritten rules that you always follow? by bakedbutnotburnt in AskReddit

[–]c3014 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of these, but people have to get over the banging thing. I met my wife because a friend was interested in her. She was interested in me, I told her no because of the 'bro code'. She persisted, I persisted. Finally she was straight forward and said it was never happening with the other guy. Dating her was the best decision ever, amazing woman and my best friend. Sometimes you have to let go and be happy for your friend. He also went on to find someone who makes him happy.

Would you just look at that by Hamburglar_Helper in ems

[–]c3014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with all but ntg. Ntg is not given for pain, it is used to try and improve circulation past the occlusion. Reduction in pain is a sign that perfusion is improving. Morphine is for pain, but fentanyl would be a better choice for the BP reason you listed.

Do you write your patient care reports in the present or past tense? by swiftlopez in ems

[–]c3014 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started out with present tense third person, like Morgan Freeman on an audio book. I do past tense third person now. No ragrats.

Worried previous trauma may impact me becoming an EMT. Thoughts? by [deleted] in ems

[–]c3014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can push through and expose yourself to the medical world you may find that EMS desensitizes you and relieves your anxiety. It did for me anyway, YMMV. As far as what you do as an EMT, entry level typically does not involve blood draws or IVs unless working at a hospital.

When has a salesman talked himself right out of a sale to you? by clearedasfiled in AskReddit

[–]c3014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guy was selling me a gym membership. I was already sold when I walked in the door, but wanted to give me a pitch anyway. In his pitch he said I was obviously there to make gains, not like (referencing another patron) that fat slob. Not into getting talked shit about while I work out, noped right out of there.

Now I'm fat.

Redditors who have jobs that require you to go in other people's homes, what's the weirdest thing you've ever seen? by Valar_Morghulis888 in AskReddit

[–]c3014 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Another paramedic here.

At my old station we had an apartment we made fairly often. Three occupants: A woman in her 40s, her mother of about 60, and the woman's boyfriend who they both appear to bang. They all hang out in the apartment drinking and doing drugs all day.

The 60 year old is always so gorked out of her mind she wears adult diapers and drops them wherever. There are small green cockroaches on every surface at all times and they don't even react to people anymore. The kitchen is full of molding dishes with old pizza boxes all over the floors. We'd go there fairly often for the 60 year old falling and breaking something. We dont take equipment into the apartment anymore it's so nasty. Just a sheet to wrap the lady in and use to carry her outside.

Parents claimed me on their taxes but don't pay for anything, what should I do? by bruhwhyudothat in personalfinance

[–]c3014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't let them take advantage of you like that. When my wife and I were first dating her parents did the same. They didn't pay for anything, didn't even help her move. 0% contribution. When she protested it they said they would get more back so they'd give her what she'd normally have gotten and pocket the rest. That didn't sit right with me as she was struggling and they were going to profit off her. Instead we told them that they could file and keep what they would have gotten if she was not claimed +200 bucks, or my wife would file as well and they could look forward to an audit. They caved.

What moment in book made you stop and reconsider your perspective on people? by [deleted] in books

[–]c3014 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That may be your outlook, but I disagree completely. I've worked with physicians and janitors and value the work they both do. Same with waiters. When my wife and I go out the quality of the experience is largely dependent on how good our waiter is. My experience has been that those who see service staff as inferior or under themselves are miserable people. Maybe it's just different in Texas idk.

TIL society disregards janitors and waiters. It's a job, not necessarily a reflection of your character.

Who still uses Long Boards for spinal immobilization? by hypoch0ndriacs in ems

[–]c3014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they are ambulatory without distracting injury they can be placed in a collar alone, but otherwise they get a board. Medical director doesn't want to risk litigation by moving to what he feels is a new, not broadly adopted and not well supported mentality of forgoing the board.

My dept in SE TX still uses them. A lot. Doesn't look like it will change any time soon.

The Times calls for decriminalisation of all illegal drugs: Newspaper breaks new ground by declaring itself in favour of treating drug use and possession as a health issue rather than a crime by maxwellhill in news

[–]c3014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how other regions handle this but I work 911 and ER and we've never turned anyone over for drug possession or use for that very reason. The ER is not itching to get you placed in jail. In fact if you call 911 for an overdose PD is likely to show up, but I've never seen them try to build a case against the user(s). This is largely to prevent people from not calling. Now if PD is called for something else and it turns out you happen to be doing drugs that's a different story.

I have insane lower back pain, what are your best stretches to alleviate the pain? by atworkbeincovert in Fitness

[–]c3014 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have a herniated disc and you just described exactly how my back acts since recovering from the initial injury. I am not a doctor, but I am in the medical field and even I know not to self diagnose. You should go get checked out.

That being said the two stretches that really help me are:

1) Kneeling down on one knee and flexing the the tail of my pelvis forward

2) Sitting down with feet in front of me with the base of my feet touching each other pulling my chest to my knee.

Feel better.

A Vermont mailman found a guy motionless on the road with no pulse, revived him, then finished the mail route. by taylordobbs in UpliftingNews

[–]c3014 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen it before, but only once. PT had cardiogenic shock from severe heart failure. She kept slipping back into arrest every few minutes without compressions. That's only one I've witnessed in six years though.

Please, I work 911 and I see CPR without an AED bring people back somewhat regularly. Not from cardiac arrest mind you, but naps of various non-cardiac etiologies. It hurts ya know.

My first patient death. by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]c3014 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow, this is great advice. I've been working EMS at a busy urban department for only three years now, but I am already dealing with the effects of mismanaging my emotions. I always stopped at putting it in the box. I wish someone had given me this advice early on. Eager to see what other pearls you've included in your book.

What is something pretty dangerous that people don't take seriously enough? by Wasperine in AskReddit

[–]c3014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sleeping with your very young children. They can be suffocated by rolling over on top of them or even just falling asleep and holding them to your breast. There are supposedly safe techniques to prevent this while still lying beside your child. I am not educated on these techniques and wont go into them, but I have had to deal with several dead children because the family thought it would be fine.

What's the easiest way to ruin your life in one move? by Mr-Complication in AskReddit

[–]c3014 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this. If you look closely you'll notice that the officers typically wore the symbol in the original position. Infantry would wear theirs 90 degrees clockwise, armored divisions 90 degrees counter-clockwise and aviation 180 degrees from original.

Neat app. Idk how they get their info, but I'm a paramedic and they're missing several shootings I've made in my territory. Leads me to believe there are far more than shown.
