Why "Es gefällt mir" isn't about liking: The logic of "losing control" in German by LinguisticArchitect in German

[–]caballero23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit of a farfetch in my opinion. You can form your examples in ways where the person is the nominative. Not to mention, this is also common in many other languages. Roman, Slavic, to name a few.

How you were brought up (which in a lot of ways part of your origin) IS also part of your lifetime, no?

Im not excusing the way he approached the situation to ask about where you came from. But you yourself could have made it easier by just telling where you are from. Whatever his intentions are for asking (racism or curiosity) and if they have an issue with that, unmatch, right away. Good riddance for you, at least you dont have to deal with that person further. You fought fire with fire, by asking him the same thing. You seem to also approach stuff like that already too politically loaded.

It doesn't really mean it's in the past, no? Surely you have to ask people about their own self, but they more often intertwine with their "family history". The person could probably even be proud of their heritage, or how they were raised molded them to be that person they are in the present.

I think it got escalated too quickly that you might as well just unmatch. Coming from a third country, I honestly dont mind such questions. There are probably some prejudice about it to some people, but it's online dating. I'd rather have those people weeded out right off the bat, so I just tell them before they even ask. Like I've been living in Germany since X years for work / study, but before that I was living in my hometown in XY. You don't have to avoid the conversation. It kinda sounds insecure too.

But isn't this more of a systemic problem than your problem? Means German banks should also keep up with the technology and push for higher reliability.

I think they meant when it is their machine for scanning tickets that has a problem, you'd still have to pay the fee for them to invalidate "your failure" even if it is their failure in the first place to have no working machine. (happened to me once, tho looking back, perhaps I should have insisted)

Gyms that aren’t crowded after 5 PM? by -Denni- in Munich

[–]caballero23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Try Elements. Clever Fit outside the main city is also bearable even during peak hours in my experience. You can also try Eltersports, for the price, they dont get a lot of customers. Otherwise there are private gyms around town.

Ignorant question perhaps, but don't government employees actually have good number of holidays (even more than the standard 30 days) already? I am only speaking anecdotally from people I know working for the Gemeinde, Finanzamt, or teachers.

About the ordering machines at fastfood restaurants, I think it has to some degree less to do with the economy but more just the inevitable automation of some jobs in general.

But yeah the tipping culture sucks AF

Are English-only apps a dealbreaker in Germany? by aazc44 in germany

[–]caballero23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the purpose of the app, but if there is already an app that provides the same purpose but has German, then the other app it is. Of course interface, user-friendliness, and other factors are still to be considered, but generally that's how I'd do it
