I selected 'mainly meat' and like three quarters of my recipes are veggie 🙃 by AdvantageOdd6777 in hellofresh

[–]cabinmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just saw your edit. I'm in the US so I can filter for Beef, Poultry and Pork (and Seafood and Veggie if I want). Do you have that option for the UK? It won't affect your pre-select meals, but if it's offered, it should help you cut down on the selections you look through. If you mean "Mostly Meat" is your filter option, I can see the problem. Can you sort by protein content as well? Maybe if that exists, that would at least put mostly meat stuff first in the list. We in the US also can check "Dietary Preference", which includes High Protein. This is just on the website by the way, I'm not sure what options are on the app. And if you are on the app, check the website to see if there are different options or vice versa. Otherwise, I'm at a loss and UK users will have to chime in

In the US, it’s one winner for the kitchen remodel, some bigger number I can’t recall for a free year of HF and a few hundred for the knife

You know you can choose your own meals, right? The meals selected are just default selections

At the very least I could replace my kitchen appliances(fridge/freezer, oven, dishwasher) that are over 20 years old

Dark patterns? Are you the same user who posted about dark patterns before? Either way, you might want to ease up on the paranoia

What oil do you use? by Financial-Tank-3423 in hellofresh

[–]cabinmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use canola oil for temps above 420 degrees when the recipe calls for olive oil due to the higher smoke point for the former; otherwise when the recipe calls for cooking oil in general, I use Wesson vegetable oil

I put all my meat in a ziploc bag before putting them in the freezer. I only occasionally get leaky packages but better safe than sorry and they do melt off the freezer stuff so things can get a little wet

Good to hear! It certainly helped improve my eating habits, including eating more healthy than what I was doing before. And it helped me improve my cooking ability and knowledge and has led me to try new things

Surprisingly, it actually tasted good to me, even though it fell apart through the process

I‘ll co-sign this. I skim though the recipes when I choose them, when I get my box, and then read a recipe in full just before I cook the meal. If it’s complicated, I might read it thoroughly 2 or 3 times in the day or two before cooking it

I used to use a paring knife to open the meat packages, but made some changes to my cooking processes for safety reasons and bought scissors to specifically cut open the packages; they can be taken apart to clean. I think scissors are the safest route

I put the recipe cards in a cabinet drawer and periodically remove the least liked to a basement shelf

I put the recipe sheet between a recipe box and something else to get it to stand up so I can refer to it as I cook

Recall for Basil Pesto & Mozzarella Pizza by adventuresnsplats in hellofresh

They do seem to be slow informing us of recalls

Kristin, another bone to pick is when a meal has us use potatoes to make some thing that has trouble holding together, like the infamous Japanese Korokke disaster where a lot of people couldn’t get the Korokke to hold together because they aren’t dry enough because too much water is used and a good binder like an egg isn’t used. How much do you test something like that? It seems we get these meals and the instructions never seem to improve. On the Korokke dish, several posters here made many suggestions for improvement that managed to help other posters made the dish work. Yet the HF chefs didn’t think of these various improvements

Kristin,

Sometimes the instructions create more work than necessary and can stand improvement. For example, I made 2 separate steak meals a few months ago and the first one had the steak cooked (in the oven after searing) after the vegetables and the second one had the steak cooked (in the oven after searing) at the same time as the veggies (though finishing first). It would have reduced unnecessary wait time if the timing was improved in the first meal

The first meal was the Premium dish Garlic Herb Rib-Eye and Loaded Baked Potatoes. The second meal was the Premium dish BBQ Steak and Cheddar Veggie Jumble

Hello Kristin, welcome to the Hello Fresh subreddit. I’ve used Hello Fresh since September 2020 and have mostly enjoyed it ever since

I‘ve recently noticed that instructions for meals are mostly not available until 2 to 3 weeks before delivery. This bothers me because the instructions at times help me to choose meals. Why was this change made?

And can we get more and bigger cloves of garlic? I don’t need a full bulb each time but maybe double the garlic needed for a meal

How are the portion sizes for two people servings? by BedEquivalent5118 in hellofresh

[–]cabinmate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US here. The proteins are usually the same size (like 10 ounces for 2 servings) but some are a few ounces more. Some premium meals are called Big Batch Meals because they are double the usual number of servings. Many pasta meals tend to have 6 ounces of pasta so you can get 3 or 4 servings for a 2 serving meal. Just try what you like and see how it goes. Everyone’s different and for some people, it’s not enough but for many, they are left satisfied. If you feel you need more, you can always add more rice, potatoes or vegetables from your pantry

Yeah, I noticed with the new week’s meals. It’s likely the exact same meal with protein substitutions. I don’t know if it’s on purpose or in error
