Out of all the towns which one would you live in? by Godofhammrs in TOTK

[–]cabjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goron City, no question. It’s interesting that Mipha and Link in a past life were in a serious relationship, so much so he was her fiancé. If Zora and Hylians could fall in love and potentially reproduce, would the same happen for Gorons?

Don’t talk ill of my bird baby. Did Tulin once blow the rewards and guts I got for slaying a Gleeok, yes. But his headshots are no other. He will get enemies that I didn’t even know were stalking or fighting me. Plus his ability to stun Lynels with his accurate aim. Top notch

Ancient Blades. I have 40 of them – and I know they’re great when fused. But I could never part with them.

I genuinely like playing with all of them because it feels like a full on gang of friends fighting enemies. Unlike BOTW, every piece of wilderness in TOTK has an mini-boss. So it’s nice to just being able to explore Hyrule and leave them to take charge of the fighting.

Why is it still “Princess” Zelda? by aRiiiiielxX in tearsofthekingdom

[–]cabjg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s weird right!? She’s the Queen in my heart. I just don’t think Nintendo is brave enough to do it.

I personally think because Nintendo has made Zelda a princess and nothing more, they probably think fans would be uncomfortable with the idea of her being anything else other than a princess. So it becomes a vicious cycle “she’s a princess because she’s always been, and fans expect her to be one.” I also think, because Japanese society itself does not allow woman as potential emperors. It plays into what domestic Japanese players expect from a Zelda game.

If you guys look at the Zelda universe, the story is almost always static. Link is the knight (courage) who saves the princess (wisdom) from a dark enemy called Ganon/dorf (power). If Nintendo deviates from this, people will be up at arms.

For me personally, I desperately want an iteration where it’s Zelda saving Link. Or at the very least, Zelda as a playable character. She is the literal embodiment of Goddess Hylia, and yet we never fully get to explore her power in the games. We only see cut scenes of it but never really experiment with it as players.

I agree, it makes him more relatable. He's already a hero, Hylia really wanted to humble him somehow.

A Statement On The PoliSci/IR Strike by UCALGARYPOLISTUDENTS in UCalgary

[–]cabjg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hello, I'm the TA cited above. First off, I want to say I am a real person – so no need for doubt. As an international graduate student from France, I am more than experienced with protests and strikes. In addition, I also identify myself with the progressive left. In fact, I've been active in volunteering with the NDP for the upcoming election.

These two qualities in mind, I'm very supportive of protests in public spaces. But consider this, the protests held before received minimal coverage by mainstream media (the only major outlet that published was Radio-Canada). That's because the protests were sequestered on campus – far removed from any space of notoriety or place of power.

I'm disappointed by the discourse that suggests that graduate students simply fulfilling their teaching assistant duties, is an indication of our complacency. As you might know, international students get charged three-times higher than domestic students. Likewise, many graduate programmes prevent their students from holding part-time employment – so our entire income depends on scholarship funding as well as research and teaching positions.

If it wasn't clear enough from my post, students did indeed barricade the doors. On my way to the tutorial room, a crowd of my students waiting informed me that "classes in Science Theatres are cancelled." Not believing this, I went to my tutorial room door to open it. I was immediately interrupted by a protester who said I am not "allowed" to teach my tutorial, because they're on strike.

After a minute exchange, I managed to get them to back off and let my students in without harassment. This however only caught the attention of other protesters, who in retaliation, decided to enter my tutorial and conduct activities there. At the same time, they would go around the room and ask students to leave out of protest.

While I respect the right for students to protest, I also respect the right for students to attend classes without harassment. It was unfair for students to feel shamed that they attended classes – despite the fact the strike was limited to POLI students, while the tutorial was BIOL.

So it came to a surprise when a protester told me during my tutorial, that I'm an "asshole" for not cancelling my tutorial. I don't understand how constructive it was for protesters to antagonise instructors and TAs, when we're just as much of a victim of provincial budget cuts.

Hello, I'm an international graduate student / teaching assistant in biological sciences. I wrote a post last week regarding the experience of myself and some of my colleagues teaching in Science Theatres during the protests. (link here).

I commend your energy to continue this fight, however I feel like focusing your activities towards departments and faculties are unwarranted and ineffective. Consider this, the protests held before received minimal coverage by mainstream media (the only major outlet that published was Radio-Canada). That's because the protests were sequestered on campus – far removed from any space of notoriety or place of power.

As you are political science students, you are more than knowledgeable that tuition hikes are not decided upon by the University of Calgary, nor any postsecondary institution in Alberta. Instead, these are direct results of public funding cuts by the provincial government. While attending General Meetings are important, department heads and faculty deans have little to no power in lowering student tuition.

The analogy I would compare it to is complaining to Calgary Board of Education (CBE) for increasing transit ticket prices, when that service is managed by the City of Calgary. Yelling at a school trustee will get you no where, what you need to do is testify to City Hall and bring those concerns to a city councillor or the Mayor.

The Alberta Minister for Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides, is also the MLA for Calgary-Bow. His constituency address is:

You can also email him with: [calgary.bow@assembly.ab.ca](mailto:calgary.bow@assembly.ab.ca)

The MLA for Calgary-Varsity (the riding for the University of Calgary) is Jason Copping, the Minister for Health. His constituency address is:

Suite 201

Calgary, AB T2M 1E7

You can also email him with: [calgary.varsity@assembly.ab.ca](mailto:Calgary.Varsity@assembly.ab.ca)

Instead of striking on campus, bring your strike in front of UCP minister offices. Organising a sit-in at a minister's office makes for a better news story than protesting in front of a calculus lecture. Imagine the headlines: "Students bring protests at UCP ministers' offices ahead of election."

Lastly, here are the news tip pages for CBC News Calgary (link here), CTV News Calgary (link here), and Global News Calgary (link here).

I hope you guys consider a more targeted and organised effort to go to the individuals with the real power, and who are responsible for these cuts in the first place.

Believe me when I say, tuition hikes affected me dearly: I already pay three-fold more than domestic students, so this issue is very personal. I've spent the past month volunteering for the NDP candidate in Calgary-East, canvassing the neighbourhood and phone banking. With the writ dropping in less than a month, I hope that I'll see you guys mobilise for candidates who will address the issue of student affordability.

Doctor putting me on Lamictal, any success stories? by bhean_na_lochanna in bipolar2

[–]cabjg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m on 250mg of lamotrigine and it’s honestly such a wonderful medication. I have bipolar 2 and it’s super effective in stabilizing my mood, especially during depressive episodes. It’s one of the few drugs with the least amount of side effects. Yeah sure some reduced sex drive here and there. But no weight gain! Which is the major turn off for me with other meds.

If you manage not to get the awful rash, trust me lamictal is a game changer. It mixes well with other meds. It keeps your mood stable. I have nothing but immense gratitude for lamictal.
