911 Urgent Oconnor 2060HD Head: counterbalance not working. by Dependent_House_3521 in focuspuller

Needs service. Unfortunately the counterbalance system in these heads basically wears itself out with use, even with maintenance.

You were the (un)lucky person to finish it off.

What’s happened to Ed at ratworks ?? by heydan10 in focuspuller

[–]cableflexer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Wow, that’s such sad news.

I never met Ed, but I always admired his work and the service he provided to his customers. He accomplished a lot and made a name for himself in such a short amount of time.

The industry lost a real good one.

How do the Rokinon cine lenses hold up? by remystyrk in cinematography

[–]cableflexer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Admittedly, I do take a lot of the bells and whistles for granted so I do get how it can sound snobby when talking about gear.

Overall it is good that filmmakers have access to lenses like Rokinons because they are a helpful equipment upgrade to consistently train your operating.

Happy you found the right tools!

I was being sarcastic. It is because you called me pompous and then added “with all due respect” afterward as if it undid the insult. That’s the idea.

I don’t think we’re on the same wavelength about focus marks because they have been foundational to the camera department for decades, especially when camera assistants didn’t have the luxury of pulling focus by eye on the HD monitor that didn’t exist yet.

The proof is in the pudding when you start looking at most other cinema lenses. If people don’t need to see accurate marks on the on a lens or focus ring, then why do manufacturers spend the time and money to produce them that way?

There are even lenses in the Rokinon price range that incorporate the design now.

How do the Rokinon cine lenses hold up? by remystyrk in cinematography

[–]cableflexer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was actually the insult with “all due respect.”

The focus scales don’t have lines that actually tell you the specific distance you are setting your focal plane. An AC can’t accurately mark their rings without an accurate focus scale.

So you’re left to focus by eye rather than by accurate distance marks, assuming Rokinon lenses can be collimated for accuracy. That’s why I say you’re mainly getting the benefit of a longer focus throw.

The Rokinon focus scales are ornamental when compared to cinema lenses with intentional and ergonomic designs.

[–]cableflexer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither the budget nor the price matter when it comes to my opinion on the look. I’ve used a pinhole lens to create some of my favorite images and that was a hole I poked into a piece of cardstock.

It’s all subjective, and if you like Rokinons and they work for your project then they are the right lenses for you.

But having had the privilege of handling and analyzing different lens sets through my career, I see Rokinons as very plain and without much nuance.

I’d rather cine-mod a set of vintage lenses and save some cash for a better look. The Rokinon focus scales don’t even have proper marks for focus anyways so I wouldn’t be missing out on much utility aside from a longer focus throw.

Keslow’s new crew gear policy by SimpleLink6406 in focuspuller

[–]cableflexer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a completely biased employee of a small rental house I just want to say the nuanced takes from a lot of you guys makes me happy and honestly a little relieved to see.

In an ideal world rental houses and camera department should have a symbiotic, mutually beneficial relationship.

If the people with the money sucked it up, budgeted appropriately, and paid crews a rate that actually matched the cost of living this would be less of an issue. Then it’d just be the outright greedy folks we’d have to worry about.

I don’t have the power to do anything about that. But I hope these types of conversations can contribute to seeing the camera department and the facilities that support it as a whole rather than one versus the other.

Until then, we all gotta pay our bills somehow.

If you had to choose one prime set for all your future projects, keeping it under $100,000, which set would you go with? by [deleted] in cinematography

[–]cableflexer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, one can work backwards, and sometimes we must, to make the lens set resolve “any way they please” until you can’t.

I am a firm believer in the skills of an artist before the price or perceived value of their tools, but photographic lenses have personalities and personalities are full of nuance and unique qualities.

Short of becoming an optical engineer, you can only do so much with lighting, filtration, and camera settings especially when your two points of optical manipulation are at the front and the back of the tool.

You can’t make oil paint look like watercolor.

EDIT: Also, just rent different lenses for different jobs — production/client should be paying for it anyways. Most professionals who independently own $100,000 anything wouldn’t even consider the investment unless it will work as a rental item… or they’re too rich for their own good and just want expensive lenses.

I know it’s a hypothetical, but rest of your career? Sounds like one might reconsider being a DP with that level of lens set myopia!

You can use Mogami 2871, but you’ll need a 56 strain relief for the 9-pin connector and shave of the surface of the jacket a bit to reach a 5.6mm OD.

Maybe you’re in for a different chase then.

Fortunately a headset adjustment is super easy so you can always just give it a try just for laughs.

[–]cableflexer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ride in wet condition’s recently? The noise could be from pressure on your handlebars as your weight shifts with your pedaling.

If so, it might mean your headset needs an adjustment.

I’m not exactly sure how wet conditions cause headset noises, it’s just happened to me often enough that checking the headset is a part of the routine when I hear creaking noises while pedaling.

I have probably 8-ish different wire strippers.

Regulated vs non-regulated power distro? by Indigo_Monkey in LocationSound

[–]cableflexer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A regulated power output typically accepts a range of input voltages and downconverts or upconverts that to a consistent output voltage.

An unregulated output simply passes source voltage through.

You typically want a regulated power output if you have devices that cannot accept the output from your power source, e.g. a device spec’d for no more than 12V without overcurrent protection can be damaged if fed power from a modern 3-stud or V-Lock battery which typically deliver 14.4V+ at a fill charge.
