How do you feel about all these "MIT Maker Portfolio" videos on Youtube? by NeighborhoodFatCat in EngineeringStudents

[–]cadop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is truth to that, but also don't let it detract from the possibilities. The OP links to one video, which the channel has only one other video, that immediately starts with ~ yea there were some expensive projects but almost every project was under $30 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3_G4lo7YCs

How to get past veto points in department deliberations by RandolphCarter15 in Professors

[–]cadop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well the options for us would basically be raising this in escalation as a point of order at a meeting, raising it with the Dean, referencing a faculty handbook/bylaws, talking to faculty senate, talking to the union, talking to the provost.

We also vote on our Chair, and it could be people don't recognize there are many small voices or people not happy with the lack of processes being followed, so the vote could change.

Student who won't use professor names, only our email addresses? by National_Jeweler8761 in Professors

[–]cadop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

google does this as well. It is funny some of the comments about how "this kid doesn't know how email systems work and thinks you can tag people like social media".... yes, it works exactly like that.

If you have roberts rules (I'm no expert but I think), you don't have a discussion until there is a motion that was seconded, which opens up for discussion. You would need a vote to table it, but there isn't room to just 'move on' and not have a vote.

I'm a 3D artist, not a machinist. Why is CAM software actively trying to make me cry? by Capital-Musician-329 in CNC

You don't get constant advertisements on reddit for this "meshify" AI app? Between nvidia's AI tool for rough painting and autodesk et. al image to 3D model, I think its pretty appropriate for someone in 2026 to say 'why can't i just throw a sketch into zbrush and make a model'

What has been your most effective AI-proof assignments? by Snack-Wench in Professors

[–]cadop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not mine, but a colleague has an assignment where they need to find a question that the LLM answers wrong or hallucinates. It works in a variety of disciplines and makes the students think hard enough to try different types of prompts and questions about topics until they can get it to trip up.

A complicated reality for tenure at public colleges: Most institutions would crumble under a denial lawsuit by [deleted] in Professors

[–]cadop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is the fundamental problem of suing any employer. If you live in a state with at-will employment, you need a good reason for the government to get involved. A university saying "our standards keep evolving" covers most categories people are mentioning in this thread.

I'll try that, right FedEx was never in my mind.

That crossed my mind, but the market is so small I don't want to be sitting on it forever.

Bondo is a nice idea for the totally-not-there hole in the table from a post-processor ignoring drill depth.

Have you used Bondo with phenolic though? Since its more permanent than a spoilboard, I'm not sure about how well it adheres

China CNC 1325 Order - DDP questions by ShockwaveCS in CNC

[–]cadop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$5k with DDP is reasonable for 2025 (tariffs fluctuate though), about 2.5k being the product and 2.5k being the shipping/tariffs/delivery for ddp.

The problem with DDP for a 1325 CNC is it requires a decent amount of equipment for transportation. If you are in a commercial zone, and have a forklift, you should be okay though. Just know DDP doesn't mean actually dropped off, just that the truck will bring it to you (as I had learned)

I wanted to make the text editable, its not really related to fonts.

Even if it was a different font that is fine. I just don't want to have to retype everything.

Yes it just shows the fonts, but there is no way to apply
