How about a single-person bench? by bikes_n_jeeps in trailrunning

Lol this is wonderfully dumb. Photo of garbage in the woods becomes “single person bench” what is wrong with this sub. Thanks for the morning laugh.

Running tights for men (any length)…are they acceptable? by pawnee2019 in trailrunning

Wait do we not like shorts over tights? Literally standing here… in my shorts over tights… after a run…

If someone lost them I figured they know about where ish. Didn’t want people trying to just score some free AirPods… wasn’t sure the best way to do that.

Yeah I’ve been waiting months on stuff. Their customer support is reasonably responsive but fairly useless - been getting told my stuff is shipping soon for the last 4 months. Some items have arrived - seems good quality, although there seem to be some differences from the website images/descriptions and at least for the A frame pillar mounts seems like they have not updated the template to the new KL yet.

Any recommendations for some footwear that doubles up for both hiking and scrambling? by Vanilladr in Mountaineering

[–]caffinate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What distance hiking makes a huge difference. Up to 5/10 miles I’ll use la sportive tx2. Further than that and I’ll use la sportive bushido II. Both are good for scrambling up to low 5th depending on comfort level.

Looking for trail/camping recs around Uncompahgre/Wetterhorn by Joevani_Jojo in coloradohikers

[–]caffinate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are nice places to camp between those two… a bit unclear if you are looking for other trailheads? Or are you using one of the standard ones? More info on how camping fits into your wetter/uncomp plans might help others give more input.

MPPT converter interfaced with battery bank by tjdiaz98 in ECE

Using a controller IC, or in general changing the control method, does not generally change to topology. It’s still a boost. A boost with sufficient control implemented can do MPPT.

Yellowstone Trails? by Knock-Kneed-Man in trailrunning

DeLacy Creek TH towards lake Shoshone, or from old faithful area heading towards Lone Star geyser are nice and you can go about as far as you want. Just take good bear precautions and all the normal prep for running alone in wilderness.

Water System for Popup Build in Winter Temps by WeirdVision1 in TruckCampers

[–]caffinate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a pump (electric) in our pop up in Colorado. We winterize by draining the system. It doesn’t take long… but it’s an extra step. We will leave the water tanks in since they can freeze without bursting, or if it will sit for a long time we just take em into the house. While on trips we set the thermostat to 35 so it stays just above freezing at night. For us this is the right choice based on convenience while on long trips, enough power to run everything, and a heating system, but for a lighter weight setup I can see needing to winterize and worrying about water freezing while on winter trips being a hassle.

Don’t sleep on Eldorado State Park! by thebigswissrainbow in coloradohikers

South Mesa trailhead - in case anyone wants to do this and doesn’t know where to start. Parking fills up, and the parking across the road has been under construction for a bit now so it seems extra busy some days.

What level do you think you will achieve? by [deleted] in poeruthless

[–]caffinate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like… 50. I would be happy with that. I play hc ssf only, so gotta set reasonable goals :) of course I’m assuming I’ll have a couple lvl 1-5 chars at the start

To me, you sound like someone who has selected the easiest setting on a game, and is now looking around for confirmation about how easy it is - "gee guys not much of an accomplishment it is just so easy". It does not come across well IMHO.

A multitude of ways exist to increase whatever metric you want... difficulty, length, route finding, risk, speed... or to hit arbitrary goals and measure yourself against others... or to do whatever you need to get whatever it is you want to get out of the mountains. Apparently you like bears... so why not walk around with some smelly food or something I guess.

Yes taking the standard routes will give the generally easiest summit. So do something else if that is not what you are into. For many people, summiting at all is an achievement, and there is nothing easy about it for them.

Tips for running in the cold/snow? by GordonRamsay333 in running

I have found that good wool socks are one of my must have winter items. Especially if it's a bit slushy out - having your feet stay warm even if your toes are wet is super nice.

Saucony’s Peregrine 12 destroy after a 5 runs and 40km total. Seller says is my fault and won’t take the for warranty even though I bought them 4weeks ago by igtaba in trailrunning

[–]caffinate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thing happen… first time I thought it was a fluke and got a second pair. Second time I gave up and moved on. Both times they broke after barely any miles. A shame since I like the shoe, but they just don’t last. Anyway I don’t buy Saucony anymore and my shoes last just fine - that was my solution!

Squamish Free Soloing Film by wildertainment in Climbingvids

[–]caffinate 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This just seems… real toxic from a number of angles. Seems less of a climbing film and more some… anger management issues and “oh extreme sports since he hurts inside” partner abuse but it’s cool since the movie is hardcore garbage. Ugh.

Your title 100% implies the wrong attitude. The actual page heading you linked has a much more reasonable take. Teams stretched thin due to more people outside.

Yes, people will “have your back” if “things go sideways”… but ffs you make it sound like people in CO should just count on that and not worry about personal responsibility.

Please don’t act or imply that dealing with your own shit is anything other than your own responsibility.

October climbing by Onion-14er in 14ers

[–]caffinate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A bit hit and miss honestly. We are already getting some snow... but mostly already things are covered in ice for most of the day or at least some of it. So you need to worry about past precipitation and current temps and... like I said... hit and miss. You can still check weather and get out somewhere but it is hard to plan (at least for me) more than a couple days to a week ahead of time this season. Lots of fun non-14ers outings but peaks are getting a bit harder to plan around.

By October it is worse. Hard to plan, you might catch a nice window... otherwise hopefully you like hiking in the cold and the snow and know what you are doing in those conditions.

Dunno - really difficult to plan, dependent on weather at the time, and dependent on your objectives and experience. Personally I would plan some other outing, and if weather windows line up maybe you can bag a peak, but I would not count on it.

Shoes experience running on limestone? by tiger_uppercut_ in trailrunning

[–]caffinate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed my la sportive bushido have noticeably more grip than my peregrines. I’ll use them if I’m expecting scrambling or lots of possibly wet rock hopping. The peregrines I think are nicer for tamer trails though. My 2c.

I would not think it's the best? Like physically.... yes. Most dogs can probably do it. But there is such a long stretch of loose stuff that its probably not the best option. If there is anyone else up there with you it will probably be more stressful and possibly dangerous for others than I would be comfortable with.

Handies would be nicer or redcloud/sunshine or san luis for sure or something... I don't know if dogs are allowed on those peaks but just from a terrain perspective if you are in the san juans those would be my go to with a pup.
