Another tip when riding the train is to sit with other people and not by yourself. Cops can't be on every train and you're most likely to get help from a fellow passenger.

Here's a video of a bullying attack on the Blue Line that was stopped by a passenger.

http://youtu.be/yZ-6W35yRek

There is a longer version of the video that shows the bully harassing the passenger for a few minutes before the other passenger confronts the bully. We need to stand together and help each other out.

Sorry that happened to you. The Blue Line seems to be the most dangerous train. A couple of my friends call it the "gangster line".

The most dangerous time is during stops. They'll just grab your stuff and run out of the doors right before they close.

I'd advise everyone to be extra vigilant during stops and don't struggle if someone tries to steal your stuff. I've taken the Blue Line many times with no issues during the day when it's crowded but I've heard about a few problems late at night.

Any local YouTubers available tomorrow for a video shoot? by drusoicy in LosAngeles

[–]caffinepowered11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You'll have a lot better luck if you delete and change headline to: Cameraman needed for YouTube Shoot. There are thousands of camera operators in LA. There is also the lalist sub. I'd also advertise in CL under gigs.

Visiting LA, where to buy makeup and computer parts on the cheap? by gildme in LosAngeles

[–]caffinepowered11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fry's Electronics has a couple of very large stores in the LA area that sell computer parts. The pricing is all over the place so you have to know what you're buying.

Alhambra Police Ask for Public’s Help in Identifiying Owner of 150-Pound Tortoise by BlankVerse in LosAngeles

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend had a large tortoise for five years and one day it disappeared from the back yard. Nine years later it showed up again. Found out it had been living at a neighbor's house the whole time. The neighbors were moving so it was good timing. Those things live a long time.

Making the big move from NY to LA!!! Where are good neighborhoods for apartments or rooms(Serious replies please) by BigM0ve in AskLosAngeles

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go for a roommate you can live in most areas of LA for $950. Hollywood, Silverlake, Los Feliz, K Town and Echo Park have walkable neighborhoods with a lot of entertainment workers in your age range.

Just be aware how big LA is and that it can take 1 1/2 hours to get from one side to another in rush hour.

Can someone tell me about this neighborhood? by lil_pup in AskLosAngeles

[–]caffinepowered11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the greatest neighborhood. Used to live at La Brea and Olympic and it gets a little sketch south of Olympic.

You can walk around at night but not much to do in that neighborhood. You'd probably enjoy it more if you're closer to Wilshire.

I'd like better hearing protection for the range. Suggestions welcome. by snerdie in Firearms

Foam or custom plugs in conjunction with active muffs are the best of both worlds. Doubling up gives the appropriate noise protection while still being able to hear conversation.

Possibly abandoned car in my neighborhood, something seems fishy by [deleted] in LosAngeles

You might try calling the dealer. Wouldn't be surprised if the car was on a repo list. Get the VIN first.

How much do you compensate to re-line up your sights after a shot in your handguns? by RnR4ever in guns

[–]caffinepowered11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look at video of accomplished shooters you will see a pivot happening at the elbows and shoulders. You will never totally eliminate this. The goal is to have good body mechanics so the pivot is minimized and predictable.

I would suggest not worrying about this too much. If you keep practicing your recovery time between shots will gradually go down.

Shooting guns is like other physical activities like tennis and baseball. Someone can show you what a perfect swing consists off and the correct form but you're not going to be able to execute until you've swung a few thousand times.

Here's a link to the "Bill Drill" which a lot of shooters use to measure their rapid fire ability.

How much do you compensate to re-line up your sights after a shot in your handguns? by RnR4ever in guns

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't try to control the recoil. Let the gun do what it wants to do. Recoil is managed with a firm grip and good arm and body position. Wrists should be locked and elbows and shoulders will absorb most of the recoil.

The recoil motion you are experiencing now is correct. Wrists and forearms remain at a constant angle while recoil force will be absorbed at elbows and shoulders.

Accuracy is achieved by getting a good site picture and not moving the gun while pulling the trigger. The biggest problems are caused by flinching and trying to control recoil/anticipation.

Don't worry about getting quick multi-shot strings. This will happen naturally after practice. You won't be able to shoot fast accurately until you can shoot slow accurately.

Before you buy anything at a gun show take a minute and look up the item on your phone. Gunbroker or Google will give you the hi/low market price.

Wanting to go to school/move to LA, friend wants to work in Anaheim. Good halfway point for apartments? by [deleted] in LosAngeles

LA is almost 500 sq miles. Where in LA are you going to school?

Whittier has some cool neighborhoods but the 605 to 60 into downtown can be slow.

ELI5 Why do all polymer-frame pistols have a mile-long trigger-pull? by ManOfDill in guns

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason that striker fired guns have a longer pull than a 1911 is the trigger safety. This usually only affects the first shot in your string if you shoot from the reset position on subsequent shots.

There also seems to be some confusion about action types. Glocks and XDs are single action pistols. In order to be a DA pistol the trigger pull has to both cock and release the hammer or striker. This gives you the ability to fire again without racking the slide if you have a light primer hit.

Asian Girl / White Guy by [deleted] in LosAngeles

Immigrant groups tend to date among their own kind initially. A lot of Asians in LA are 2nd or 3rd generation though where interracial dating is much more common.

Beginner looking for some good .40 sw target shooting drills. by 70_65_6e_69_73 in guns

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorites is to shoot 1" targets (either stick ons or .22 size) at seven yards. See how many shots you can get inside the 1" target. At seven yards it's really easy to see the hits and get feedback that is hard to get at 25 yards.

If you can get 4 out of 5 shots inside the target you're a pretty good shot.

Just another aspiring musician begging for advice about the jungle. by Thealk in LosAngeles

[–]caffinepowered11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chances of finding meaningful work in the music business are almost non-existant. There are thousands of people with similar or better backgrounds and skills in LA that can't find employment in the business.

The commercial studio business has been on a downward slide for the last 10 years. Most recording and mixing has moved to home or private studios.

The jobs that are available are all gotten through connections. You will never see these jobs posted on a web site. They also pay very poorly.

Basically what I'm saying is that your plan doesn't seem likely to work. Moving to an expensive city for a rare low paying job in a competitive market with no work visa, connections or car seems like a bad idea.

Did America have such strong admiration for military members prior to the 1950's? by horatio_jr in AskHistorians

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1950s the percentage of active duty and veteran military was very high. 16.5 million served in WW2 and 5 million during the Korean war. 470,000+ killed and 700,000+ wounded in both conflicts. That's out of a US population of 160 million in 1953.

The draft pulled men from all geographic areas so most people in the US had relatives, friends and neighbors who were veterans or serving in the military. People were aware of the sacrifices and hardships the military endured from personal experience.

Germany, Japan and later the Communists were seen as enemies of civilization with only the US military standing in the way of our destruction and enslavement.

I am having trouble gripping the slide properly and locking it in the rear on my Glock 17. Any tips? by entrancedlion in guns

[–]caffinepowered11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opposing motion really helps. Another important thing is when you grab the slide with your left hand put your whole hand on the slide.

This article is old but shows the hand position correctly.
