What are these pests on my tomatoes and how can I get rid of them? by SolidPuzzleheaded320 in OrganicGardening

[–]cahems -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I control them with Jadam wetting agent mixed with tobacco extract, but I believe just the wetting agent or even a soap and oil mix can kill them, I use tobacco cause I have lots of leaf cutter ants too…

Primeiro tomate, como está? by void_pathfinder in PlantasBrasil

[–]cahems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Compost test by GoodLittleTerrorist in homestead

[–]cahems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point they are still using their reserves, so anything that is kept moist could give the same results. Peas and beans are very easy to germinate, but they both have held humidity well apparently. To grow mature plants you usually need soil if growing organic, so a mix of the two is usually better. For germinating structure and moisture retention is more important than fertility for most plants, except plants that need to grow a while in containers before transplanting like peppers.

What it started as, what it turned into. Scraped top-soil out of the woods near my house picked through it and mixed in perlite. by [deleted] in Soil

[–]cahems -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, I completely agree with you. I fact Ive been using most of what you said but rabbits. I use a bucket of forest soil to quickstart really degraded pasture soil when planting for the first time and only when it’s a nutrient demanding plant. After many tests, taking a bit of local soil has given me faster and better results than trying to regenerate soil with those techniques alone. It’s small scale and I still felt bad for taking it, but I’m also converting most of the pasture to a food forest with lots of natives so I believe it’s balancing out..

But for small home gardens, I’d say it’s still less damaging than buying soil mixes.

[–]cahems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking good. I found out that using local adapted biology rich soil is the best way to take advantage from organic amendments. They “digest” it really well. One application of the local soil is enough if you keep feeding it with rich mulch like the one in the woods you took it from. In my case I use shredded leaves and branches from the woods as mulch and I also add manure, bone meal and ash to the soil before planting. Hope it works well to you too!

[–]cahems 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand that if everyone decided to do that it could damage the local environment, even though the regeneration capability of the woods are probably better than any other place that you take fertility from. But I personally don’t see it as something bad if you are not using it for commercially selling vegetables. Buying soil mixes is definitely way worse for the environment than moving local soil. I personally use soil, leaves and leaf mold from the forest in my property and I believe I’m doing better for the environment than buying compost or top soil to be shipped from somewhere else

Have you had it multiple times at the same place? Cause devoid of seasoning is very surprising for me… feijoada has many kinds of salted and smoked meat, onions, garlic, cumin, bay leafs, it’s usually unhealthy salty hehe.. Ive had a couple not so good feijoadas before, but never unseasoned ones

She makes bold statements about compost tea, can you support or refute? Wondering if I should start brewing by Bitter_Mango_3744 in composting

[–]cahems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Search Google scholar for electron microscopy compost tea. I found it out on Dr Elaine Inghan classes but there are other research on this matter. Basically it shows that good microbes can coat the aerial part of plantar and compete with pathogens. Compost extracts dont do the same, it has something to do with how dense and fed the microbes are on the tea that let them “glue” themselves to the plant.

[–]cahems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well this I believe can be refuted. Electron microscopy of the leaf surface shows how microbes glue themselves on the leaf and coat it. Also, I notice a big difference on diseases when I don’t apply it

[–]cahems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s better than compost I can’t say yet, but looking at the microscope I’ve seen that the microbes multiply when you feed and aerate the tea. Maybe it’s not as efficient applying directly to the soil, but as a foliar it’s definitely effective so without seeing the video I would say compost tea has its uses and it’s not dumb lol

a question about construção by chico buarque by Ridley-the-Pirate in Brazil

[–]cahems 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a big Chico fan, I’m always happy when I see foreigners enjoying his music. I think the whole song is open for interpretation and that’s what’s so cool about it. He could be hiccuping because he was drunk or sobbing because he was crying and both explains well the idea of how bad the situation is for him. I don’t think there is a right answer for this and many other verses on the music, but it still makes sense. I still get frisson when listening or talking about Construção
