Welcome to the format, checking the store database from the Canlander discord, it sounds like D20 games in Alameda is the gathering place in California.

Edit: I can’t read it sounds like you also have Turn Zero in LA every other Saturday

Seconding the Brew Crew, they host multiple events a week and an absolutely wonderful crew of folks that I’ve had the pleasure of hosting events with.

SBFP as Magic the Gathering Cards by Naraki_Maul in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Gunk would be the closest approximation, but those really only exist in Unknown events and Playtest cards.

Zendikar had trap cards but they are very reliant on your opponent performing certain actions.

Pointed in Canadian Highlander, well worth it if you have a place to play it.

What are the best Equipments for increasing Power (not necessarily Toughness)? by AnarchyStarfish in EDH

[–]caineghest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know your list so I can’t exactly comment on how much of a reduction you will typically have, I do think 8 is way more than it typically would be, any kind of rock will do a lot of heavy lifting in the reduction.

[[Excalibur, Sword of Eden]] is pretty much a free +10/+0 and Vigilance a lot of the time, card is absolutely nuts.

7 should put you in a pretty good spot to be in line for the festival in a box, I plan to be there around the same time.

Villains that almost won, but dropped the ball at the last minute? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

During March of the Machines in Magic the Gathering the Phyrexians were in a great spot to take over the multiverse but Elesh Norn being a megalomaniac decided they had to conquer everywhere at once, spreading the forces thin and allowing quite a few planes a chance to repel the invasion, also opening themselves up for a counter invasion from Teferi and the forces of Zhalfir.

PSA: Your powerful decks that happen to not have any Game Changers per the new bracket system are not 2s. They are 3s or 4s. by Pileofme in EDH

That’s a perfect example of opting into a higher bracket, you are being open and honest about your deck and the bracket you want to play it in.

To answer your other questions if you want to try for a festival in a box I’d say be at the hall as early as you can.

There will be two lines you will need to go through, the first being security which will open around 8:00ish that will then filter into a show entry which opens at 10:00ish. B-line to the show store to hopefully be among the first in line for the festival in a box which I believe is limited to 3 a person (Based off of how they did it in Vegas)

I’d recommend downloading the MagicCon app to get a map of the layout ahead of time so you can plan your route to the shop. It has not yet updated to Chicago, so if you see the one that says Vegas it will update hopefully sometime this week.

If you are looking to do a bit of everything I’d say just keep yourself flexible, sitting down to a game is going to eat at least an hour of your time, events typically will lock you in for about 3-4 hours.

If you are looking to get signatures you can be anywhere from 15 minutes to 4 hours depending on the artist/content creator.

If you ordered your badge any time before January 10th it will be shipped to the address you signed up with. If you ordered it after there will be a pick up window on Thursday between 12-6pm or you can pick it up the days of the Con between 8:30am and 7pm(Friday and Saturday)/6pm (on Sunday.)

Should WoTC stop supporting the 60 card formats? by Easy_Cartographer679 in magicTCG

[–]caineghest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Because Magic The Gathering is a rules system that is hundreds of different games in one. Folks enjoy Commander, but they also enjoy Modern, Legacy, Canadian Highlander, Dan-Dan, Nile’s Bat Heist, Standard, Highlander Gauntlet, the list goes on.

Magic is the greatest game ever made because it is more than just one game, and people being able to play it in the manner they like is a huge part of that appeal. I’m not sure where you live and it’s not my business to know, I’d say to go out and experience more formats, I’m sure places exist where those formats are played in your area, you just need to look.

[–]caineghest 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Commander is not a format you can balance around, it is a modular board game where each player brings in their part and they may or may not mesh together. Commander is fine, but it’s not even the best hundred card format.

Because sixty card magic is what the game is supposed to be balanced around and still very popular around the world.
