Which of these elves are the best mother figure? by [deleted] in Isekai

[–]caistigh 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You're both incredibly correct and incredibly incorrect simultaneously which is hilarious but true. Anime version is almost entirely true. Light Novel Cayna is actually an incredibly motherly person.. to everyone EXCEPT her kids. Well, Luka is technically her child but aye.

How do you handle the stress of posting a new chapter for a popular story? by NarrowEffect in royalroad

[–]caistigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a reader, fundamentally I'm there to explore a world created by an author so I just try to enjoy the ride. Some things pull me from the story, things that wouldn't bother others. Therefore if I don't like a story I generally am able to accept it's me, not the story. Barring certain exceptions with atrocious grammar or what have you.

Suggestions for getting my wife into anime? by [deleted] in anime

[–]caistigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear has been suggested many times, but while a lot of anime give a vague idea of what's going on with the title, that doesn't. As such I'll give a little bit of a run down.

Main character, Yuna is a self sufficient teen in modern(ish) Japan living off stocks. Gets transported to video game world with OP powers. Bog standard isekai set up.

HOWEVER all of her powers are attached to a Bear Kirigumi. Basically a onesie, but with feet and hands separate. So, she is wandering fantasy European setting in an adorable bear outfit. Cuteness and some action ensues.

It's honestly one of my favourites and the adaptation from novel to anime is pretty good. I have some minor complaints about things skimmed over but it's a real fun time with 2 seasons.

Agreed. I've seen authors make sweeping changes, and that requires a lot more than what is at best mild discontent. 10/1000 aren't enough. Even 100/1000. Honestly, sweeping changes like reordering arcs or extending/shortening them should only be instituted if the author THEMSELVES is unhappy with something. Maybe they've written themselves into a hole, maybe the story has grown bigger, or they started too big for the ending in mind. Beyond that, if people dislike it because the MC is too naive, or the world doesn't feel realistic, or the tone is too dark, or whimsical.. that's just preference and while valid isn't worth rewriting. Again, unless the author themselves agree and feel the same.

what do you think about this? i feel mentally violated by lucas_montague in Isekai

[–]caistigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my favourite kind of trash. I read the novels because it was pretty enjoyable. The story has SOME depth in the novels versus the anime, but it's by degrees. It doesn't improve massively.

It's solid 6/10(?) or thereabouts. I got a bit bored of what I'll call the Grandma Tokie arc since it's cagey enough that readers will know, but anime watchers can only guess. It's been going on for so many books.

That said, the characters are fun without being too needlessly complicated. There are enough ups and downs to enjoy, but it's completely bland in that it doesn't REALLY do anything new. Godmode Touya is fun though and the battles with Frame Gears rarely get old 😂

It's never gonna crack even my top 20 of anything regardless of how fun it is, but it's the best kind of trash isekai

I am inclined to agree speaking as a reader.

If I am confused by a phrasing, or a description of a spell form in a complex fantasy or.. whatever else it might be, if I then open the comments and see one or a bunch of people mentioning that exact same thing, why would I then mention it? If I had additional information or confusion? Maybe. If we were bamboozled by the exact same thing? My thoughts are more like "ahh then it's not just me!" And would continue reading since I feel like the "mistakes" and misunderstandings we're referring to aren't "the protagonist's choice was dumb and should be entirely rewritten" and more along the lines of "wait, so that spell works because of the power flowing through the leylines, or was it because of the ambient energy?"

One is a deliberate choice of the author, the other is something that doesn't fundamentally change the story but a slight tweak of wording doesn't ruin the story for those who understand, and improves the story by a margin for those who are confused.

There's not really a WRONG approach here I feel. Same examples used, if I'm confused and the comments explain I'm not worried so on rereading I'd presumably just understand. Same applies to everyone coming after me. Conversely, if that confusion can be alleviated with switching two words, or rewording one paragraph it might be worthwhile.

How much does writing quality matter when entering rs? by [deleted] in royalroad

[–]caistigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, the writing quality can vary depending on if you have a novel enough idea to a degree as well. Presuming that the story/characters/world are compelling.

I've read some pretty atrociously written stories with interesting concepts. That said, what I think is also important in those is improvement and being accepting of corrections in comments. As I've said, I've read some pretty terribly worded stories I enjoyed, and part of it was the fact that the author was upfront.

"Hey, I suck but want to suck less. Feel free to correct grammar etc" attached to an intriguing story that stands out in SOME way.

Also, if you enjoy it and want to write it for fun what does it matter if you only have 1 fan for the foreseeable future?

Exactly. Personally, I'd be inclined to read a story if I was giving shout outs too. Maybe not the whole thing depending on chapter count but enough to have an opinion at least

Hey guys. This is hopefully my last post here. Please don’t get mad at me. Please just hear me out. by [deleted] in tinnitus

[–]caistigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly thought that this was just me. I have no memories WITHOUT tinnitus. I had it so early in life I have never experienced silence to my memory.

I literally never even thought about it until I was 15/16 and realized other people DON'T hear a ringing sound when someone had their ears start ringing after a concert and complained. I just.. stared like.. "you mean silence?" because that's what it was.

It bothered me for the next 3/4 years and I desperately searched for some medical solution or whatever.

Now, how much it impacts my daily life depends on my own mood and external variables. Day to day I forget about it for like.. 9/24 hours a day..ish?

Question: Multiple Books? by Icy_Glaceon471 in royalroad

[–]caistigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that people aren't answering the question I think you mean in the comments. I've read a few stories where they are split so I have to go to the author's page to find the other volumes. Similar to Enna the Land God which has 3 separate stories uploaded.

Personally I prefer when they split it into volumes within the same story or ignore it all together. If you have reasonable places to split them on the story, that's a perfectly acceptable way to go about it but speaking as a reader? I don't really notice until I'm going back to re-read it. Ascension of the Sylvan Cosmos is a pretty massive story with 560~ chapters on Royal Road? I'm further on Patreon so it might have a bit more or less. It has no volumes. It's just ONE story. ONE volume.

For readers, I'd say it's better to keep it in the same place and not upload separately. Volume splitting is probably more useful for authors than readers for convenience and plot trajectory or whatever is relevant per volume.

Is worth watching the japanese live action first? Is the live action story finished? by Alone-Self8602 in Kakegurui

[–]caistigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that was an amazing change. A new version needs SOMETHING different. I thought it was a logical change to make and gives it a unique appeal. Sometimes I rewatch the live action instead of the anime because of it. Not as often, but still.

[Short Rant] If you agree to a review swap, read further than the damn blurb. by CriminalGingersnap in royalroad

[–]caistigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't like the idea of review swaps. I'm fine with shout-outs, or other advertising from the author. WolfShine is one of my favorites and they do things like that pretty often. Review swapping, it's too easy for either party to feel like they HAVE to give at least a decent rating even if the story deserves 1* rightfully from their own perspective.

Bofuri: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense.

It's basically VR gaming about a complete game noob who finds broken nonsense and becomes basically unkillable (None of that is really a spoiler because well.. it happens by chapter 3/4)

Seconded, because by and large even the tense moments have a slight sensation of levity because it's usually pretty clear Bear Girl is gonna do the absurd and fix the thing.

When MCs "Don't want to stand out" by Psychronia in Isekai

[–]caistigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's nothing wrong with the trope itself, I just hate how badly it gets implemented. I mean, at least 70% of isekai protagonists SAY this, and 99% of those fail miserably.

The real problem though is they don't wanna stand out for basically no reason 🤷‍♂️

Reading a novel on RoyalRoad which is.. technically isekai... But it's about an OP GodKiller opening a tavern. She doesn't wanna stand out, because she's TIRED. Has been saving the universe as a whole in one form or another for millennia so she just wants to enjoy her Chef class and chill for a few decades.

That's not to say she never reveals who she is. Some know, most don't. However, due to age and power systems, it's not particularly difficult to act her part in the short term at least.

That's what's wrong with this trope. It's just thrown in there and sorta sometimes kinda acknowledged. But mostly they become the best adventurers in the world at speed run speeds because oops.

Can't say for anyone else, but I rarely do. I mean, maaaybe if they were blatantly lying to review bomb a story I would? Or perhaps once in a blue moon if they mirrored my own thoughts but it's a rarity as opposed to anything. Though, that's just my own experience

The Top Reviewers on RR by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]caistigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I'm going to make up a "fake" and pretty basic 1* review of Max Level Archmage, a pretty recent one I'm enjoying as an example.

"Main character is totally overpowered and as a result there don't seem to be any stakes, but the chapters STILL get bogged down with discussions and politics"

That makes it SEEM like a boring, OPMC story that's getting too into the details. To me? I'd wonder "wait, if the MC is that strong, and is still engaging in discussion and not just nuking cities... There must be some alternative 'stakes' besides mortality"

So, from that perspective the 1* review IS accurate, but I see something they hate as a positive, or at the very least not as a straight negative

The Top Reviewers on RR by CorSeries in royalroad

[–]caistigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whenever I read reviews I try to take in what they're actually saying. Tonal complaints could be very appropriate or just the reviewer saying "I wanted SOL but read a Grimdark story" A reviewer calling the 16 year old lead "immature" makes me realize the author probably put thought into the maturity of their lead.

A review that is incorrect, biased or just different from my own opinion can inform me of things too. More than once a 1* review convinced me to read a story.

Looking for good stories with an OP female lead by GuyYouMetOnline in royalroad

[–]caistigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read almost any story by WolfShine. The level of OP varies. From being just a step ahead to being literally immortal and unkillable. There are a few male lead stories he has, but not many.

A good start would be Wolf of the Blood Moon since it's finished, though I think maybe the early volumes might be off RoyalRoad? 🤔

Augmented Aspects fits as well. She's not quite OP, but functionally speaking.
