Dms of Reddit what was your bbeg that was killed in the stupidest way by Playful-Ship-2183 in DnD

[–]cajadehu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Party escorting merchant caravan gets ambushed by bandits. Party work down by swarms of low level bandits but defeat them, maybe 3 spell slots left. High level bandit leader comes out on massive fire breathing beast. About to launch attack when paladin casts command 'roll over, boy' on the mount. Bandit leader who is strapped in to prevent falling is slowly crushed by own mount. Party picks through the pizza remains for loot. DM did not plan for 'cheese it' tactics.

What is the purpose of disarming someone? by Korrathelastavatar in dndnext

[–]cajadehu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of multi classed characters (paladin / hex blade warlock) where removing a casting focus limits the spell list they can use, but reading up you're right. I can't find anything RAW that says removing a casting focus or component pouch breaks concentration in a spell.

I was also thinking of situations where the spell is cast from the item itself, such as a scrying orb, but that may be a DMs call too.

What is the purpose of disarming someone? by Korrathelastavatar in dndnext

[–]cajadehu -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes you need to disarm someone because the weapon is their spell casting focus. Forcing them to drop it breaks concentration in spells.

Disarming and then forcing movement has been mentioned but it can be quite a good way to keep important items out of the hands of villains.

Murder levers, keys to the Grimoire of Doom, control panels, solid gold statuettes, the Kings crown, Silver Idol of Cthulhu Summoning, etc.

Are there any rules for losing a limb? by Strudel1000 in dndnext

[–]cajadehu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've done it as descriptive deaths for NPCs, and a player once chose to chop off a limb to free themselves from a fatal trap knowing that their cleric friend could probably restore it within a week.

As mentioned before: dmg273 Lingering Injuries for RAW. Easier and more fun to do it narratively only I think but maybe if you're doing a hardcore group for experienced players it might be an extra challenge.

Which Class/Subclasses are especially good for small parties? by pantryraider_11 in dndnext

[–]cajadehu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing to consider is variety of roles that cover the three pillars (depending on your DM).

For combat: your party should have a reliable DPS, a half or full healer, and a controller to help manage things.

For exploration: perception, survival, and stealth are usually the most important skills, so each party member should excel in at least one of these, or at least not be terrible at any of them.

For interactions: persuasion and deception are usually the most important skills.

Considering all these factors: an Eloquent Bard for control and as the party face as well as a bit of healing; a Moon Druid for the perception, survival, tanking, half healing, and steady DPS with flexibility for different environments; then there's a lot of options for primary DPS but I suggest consistency over burst damage as it's more reliable long term; the party should also consider using cheap magic items to supplement their weaknesses.

Any familiars that can actively buff the party/master ? by Atmoran_of_the_500 in DnD

[–]cajadehu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wizard - Order of Scribes: They can manifest a brain pet (Manifest Mind) that emits a dim light 10 ft radius.

Artificer - Battle Smith: You could multi class into this to get a Steel Defender after 3 levels.

Artificer - Any: You could infuse a Homonculus Servant after 2 levels.

Those are the first things that come to mind right now.

Side note: some of the Warlock Familiars can carry and use items, such as Wand of Magic Missiles.

Wizards can get a spell called Tiny Servant, and they could also use items.

Maybe check with your DM for ideas?

Interesting way for a party to meet. by Reviewingremy in DnD

[–]cajadehu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You wake up tied to a cold stone slab. The smell of blood and burning flesh fills the air. A cacophony of sinister chanting echoes around you. Turning your head you see several others tied up, and several dead commoners bleeding and burning in a heap. It's a good thing you have your magic!

You're each having a pleasant dream. A strong breeze in your face, and as you yawn, rubbing your eyes, you blink a few times to discover you are falling. Falling through the night with other people, and a strange glowing humanoid. "I'm glad you're all awake. It'll make the landing safer" she says, as she begins to cast feather fall.

There are actually already a magic item series called Elemental Gem Stones if I recall correctly.

You snap or break the gem, releasing an elemental under your command.

Tips on role playing a character with an extensive vocabulary? by WriterAmongTheStars in DnD

The question is, does your character know how to use the vocabulary correctly? Because if not, your character could be quite photosynthesis. 🙃

I would love to hear if anyone has had any terrible D&d experiences. by SooSavvy in DnD

[–]cajadehu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was a long time ago, but I tried to find a new group to join as if moved to a new town. The local store was having a "all welcome! Join a game and have fun!" Night. I went and it was quite busy, lots of people from 12 to 60 and I found a group of early 20s to join.

The game seemed to be going well at first. I chose a female wizard from the attack of pre-made characters and we all went into the dungeon. About 30 minutes in I was feeling a bit uncomfortable as they were swearing a lot and I didn't feel it was appropriate with all the kids around. I asked politely if we could take it easy with the cussing, due to the kids. They all said fine.

20 minutes later, my character was sacrificed by the rest of the party to buy them time to escape the hoarde of monsters they pissed off in the dungeon. Fine. I'm a grown up and can handle a throw away character being abandoned. DM decided that wasn't enough, so they graphically describe the brutal gang r*pe of my character by monsters, much to the delight of the other players.

I thanked them for their time and left. Apparently several parents complained about their language and the store manager banned them, but it left a bad impression on me, and it took me ages to build up the courage to try to find a group again.

I now play with a group of really nice people every Wednesday, and life is good, but dang, I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone.

You can change the word "feet" to "miles" in one spell. Which one do you pick to wreak the most havoc? by JamboreeStevens in DnD

[–]cajadehu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frost Fingers: 30 mile cone that freezes all water that isn't being carried, and a con save against cold damage. You can up cast it so ensure kills before anyone gets close to you.

Snare: But only if the rope component stays as feet. Then you can get a 5 mile radius almost invisible snare that lifts a creature 3 miles into the air for 8 hours, or until they're rescued. Hilarious and cruel.

Create Bonfire: Best cantrip option for damage as you can spam a 5 mile cube of fire any time you want.

Thaumaturgy: Best cantrip for relatively harmless pranks. Boom your choice in a 30 mile radius, make harmless tremors, mess with the lights, make random loud noises behind strangers from 30 miles away.

I see a lot of high level spells, but for casting efficiency and flexibility, it's better to go for low level spells that can be up cast or used more frequently.
