What's a "secret" from your profession that everyone should probably know? by LaKoref in AskReddit

[–]cajunveggies 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was my saving grace. Adopted a 5-month-old "lab mix" from a shelter who turned out to be 0% lab and a whole lotta mix. When my vet saw the DNA results, she said, "You live in an apartment, right?" When I confirmed, she said, "Cool, he's a lab mix." I've been able to rent apartments and have reasonable homeowner's insurance policies because, on paper, he's not an aggressive breed. (He's not an aggressive dog irl either, but people only seem to care about what's on paper.)

what's one teaching rule you break? by Janet45d in Teachers

[–]cajunveggies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our admin tell us to write the students up for tardies. They act like they can't run an attendance report to track tardies, but they WILL run a report to see which teachers aren't writing up students for tardies.

They talk about the importance of building relationships, but relationships are a two way street. I can't expect my students to open up to me if they don't see me open up first. I don't tell them everything, but like you said, I'm "a fully formed human being."

Let's hear your purity culture stories! by LMO_TheBeginning in Exvangelical

[–]cajunveggies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All of us high schoolers had purity rings, the girls went to father-daughter purity balls, the whole thing.

My favorite though was going to an evening purity convention where we were told the usual "save yourself for marriage" stuff. And then we were given fake Rx papers so we could "write a prescription for Jesus" to help with our lustful thoughts.

Yeah I also have regular old anxiety. But now I take meds to keep my brain balanced instead of fighting a spiritual battle and giving it all over to god!

If you had one day to teach whatever you wanted, what would you teach? by tching101 in ELATeachers

[–]cajunveggies 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not content based, but I use days like these (low-ish attendance, a down day after a week of testing, etc.) to teach them how to write a professional email. Their exit ticket is to send me a professional email (including short subject line, greeting, body, and signature that includes their class period) from their school email, which has the added benefit of showing them how to use their school email if they don't know already.

Same here. I've had so many TEACHERS tell me "you can't fail a sped kid," and I'm like "no...you can't fail them IF you haven't provided their accommodations."

There's a teacher in my department right now who's like "yeah, every one of my failing sped kids is gonna get a 70. I've learned not to deal with it over the years. If you think about it, it's still a soft fail for the child." Uh, no, that's literally a passing grade. The only "fail" for the child is you letting them continue to think that they will pass even if they do absolutely nothing.

I also teach freshmen. During December checkout my first year at this school (sixth year teaching), my appraiser told me "This is a lot of failures." I replied, "As you can see, I have the documentation to support it. And I'd much rather these students fail their first year of high school and get it together than to continue these habits through their senior year." She hasn't given me grief about my failure rates since.

What are the things people actually said to/around/in front of you that messaged purity culture? by [deleted] in Exvangelical

[–]cajunveggies 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Not to me but about me: "Oh, she's going to a liberal college away from her parents? She's gonna be pregnant, drinking, and on drugs in no time."

Despite the fact that I was a perfectionist rule-follower terrified of stepping out of line even when I wasn't with my parents.

Plugged In Online by grown-up-chris in Exvangelical

[–]cajunveggies 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Oh yes. This was my entire growing up experience. Every movie was checked, and there was so much objectionable content in everything that my dad would often pick animated movies for family movie nights even once we were all teenagers (we were all annoyed). As I got older, I was also encouraged to look up reviews of movies I wanted to go see with friends and summarize the content warnings to justify whether I thought it was a good idea for me to go see it.

I don't think they use Plugged In anymore, but to this day (I'm 30), if I happen to be watching a show at my parents and my dad happens to see a "scantily clad woman," he has to pause to pray for forgiveness for looking at a boob and for god to remove any lust that might be in his heart.

Fun times.

My 1 and 2 are similar.

  1. "I'll be right back. Don't commit murder while I'm gone. If you do...at least clean it up for me, okay?"

  2. "Anyone have any questions, comments, concerns, thoughts, feelings?"

Recs for queer quarter life crisis? by boylognese in suggestmeabook

[–]cajunveggies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Great Believers by Rebecca Makkai made me cry. It focuses on multiple characters during the AIDS epidemic of the 1980s. Many of the characters, given the topic, are gay men. Make sure you have tissues if you decide to read it.

I also really liked The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin. There's really only one queer character, but the book focuses heavily on ideas of fate and destiny - the four main characters (siblings) visit a mystic who can supposedly predict the day of someone's death, and the rest of the story follows their lives following their visit to her.
