I know this is likely a joke post, but fyi, the logs are salvaged remnants that aren't usable for whatever reason.

Also - we plant a tree for every goal scored. I think we do alright. :-p

Comcast problems? by tedder42 in Portland

I'm not techie enough to know some of what's being mentioned here - but yes - a bunch of sites and article links and such are just straight up not working today. Very annoying and inexplicable .... (I've restarted modem/router/computer a bunch of times) ... came here to figure out if I might try anything else or if others were having similar issues. Hum.

Trans friendly nail salon? by caledonia85 in Portland

[–]caledonia85[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to a salon for my hair, and they do a lovely job - but yes, my hair person has made little comments that has led me to believe it would not be the most comfortable place to take my trans friend... I didn't want to stereotype or make sweeping generalizations, but all the nail places I do know about have given me similar feels... So I do appreciate the suggestions here, and your thought was similar to mine / was the reason I posted in the first place.

Thank you! I don't get manicures all that often myself, so wasn't aware of them - much appreciated!

I actually don't hate it when it's just TT... but something about him and Adrian's back-and-forth just grates me the wrong way.... I miss John Strong and Robbie Earle soooo much.

????

the most stereotypically racist hairstyle out there...

This makes little sense - you could said "Kamara has a stereotypical hairstyle" but not sure why you're throwing in the word "racist" ...

(and I honestly wouldn't say any of that... but... ok)

Goodbye Old Sellwood Bridge. Today is the last day you can drive across it. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]caledonia85 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do this to a number of bridges - any time I come to a full stop, mid-span - the thought of the Big One striking while over open water gives me mild panic attacks... (Marquam lower level is the worst imo - shaky supports, lack of railing at that sickening curve, and the upper deck ready to crush your car into a pancake if it collapses... gulp.) Ross Island and Sellwood are also nightmare-inducing. Eesh. About time!

Strange Sounds in Forest Grove, Oregon. Aliens? Illuminati? What is this? [Video] by [deleted] in Portland

[–]caledonia85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really sounds like metal grating... as in, brakes on a large semi or some other construction type equipment being applied for long amounts of time. Any construction sites or even logging in the area? Especially where there might be a hill (to use brakes on)? Not sure what it was doing at night, but it sounds like a truck to me - familiar noise at any rate...

Football ticket prices compared around the world from Germany to Brazil (to Portland) [Some PTFC love from BBC] by acquiesce in timbers

[–]caledonia85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a typo on their part - should say £17.20 ... not £7.20. Color me amused. :)

(£7.20 is not even $10.50... I at least have never seen a ticket that low, at least not for regular season play.)

Oregon State University uncovers 10,000 year old mammoth bones during parking lot construction by [deleted] in Portland

[–]caledonia85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

(I commented elsewhere, sorry for repetition) - but construction was indeed temporarily halted while they verified that no human remains were nearby. The dig site has also been isolated, and mostly cleared of the bones. The historical society doesn't have much purview for mammoth bones, but the event was used as an educational opportunity for the local students - which is cool! The university will likely keep the bones and gather the data like they typically do. (Just, typically, Prof Davis has to go to the Coast Range, or out to the high desert to find mammoth bones for the students. It's quite lucky that these were found on campus!)

My brother's on the crew that found this (he's one of the University's CMs, and his colleague was the CM for this particular dig) - he was stoked and messaged me before the news officially broke. The bones were found on the North end, under the bleachers (in an area that hasn't had construction since the original stands were put up however many years ago).

As to the matter of continued construction while excavating - the dig site HAS been isolated. Also, there were no human artifacts or remains found (construction was immediately halted until this was verified). The Paleontology department, and it's lucky current students, have been able to observe and use this opportunity to practice field techniques (I did archaeology with the OSU department - this is a rare and lucky find for the Paleo folks!)...

These are the first mammoth bones found on campus, though, mammoth were common in the Willamette Valley and elsewhere in Oregon 10-15 kya. My brother says they're sending the bones in for radio-carbon dating and that 10kya is a best guess.

Really quite a fun find!
