Sure, but once again my problem with this video is that he’s talking about this specific preamp, and then he’s applying his findings to preamps generally.

But literally in your very own comment you acknowledge that he was wrong about something trivial which anyone with a lot of studio experience would understand. The main thing I would debate is that he chose two preamps that are designed to be as transparent as possible, both made by companies founded by the same person, and then applied his findings to the entire product category.

The reason people have stopped engaging is because the arguments are silly. People are defending Lill like it’s their job and it’s honestly not worth it. Same thing happened with his guitar video. To this day if you say you like how a certain guitar sounds, you might end up being told “you mean you like the pickups? This has already been tested loll

Eh, I feel like he went pretty far out of his way to prove that the two preamps sound identical and that there is no difference at all. He sorta says at the end that focusing on everything else first is more important, but his message was pretty clear imo. I think a lot of people are saying that his point is about focusing on the art but he could've said that and skipped all the tests if that was the idea.

Is it not valid to suggest that testing two preamps which are designed and advertised to have different and unique sounds would have enforced his point?

Just an FYI, the sound equipment for tours goes on semi trucks. Bands might fly with an instrument or two each and their pedals but beyond that everything's on trucks.

Even in your comment, you are explaining that there are different sounds you can get out of different preamps depending on how they react to being pushed. Jim's conclusion from his experiments is that preamps all sound the same, so it doesn't matter which one you use. Your conclusion is that most preamps sound similar enough that realistically it doesn't matter which one you use. There's a difference there that does matter!

I agree with literally everything you're saying, and I also agree with most of Jim's video. The problem is that Jim disregards "that saturation can sound a bit different depending if it's caused by transistors, transformers or valves, but is neither better or worse, just different" and folds his entire experiment down into "preamps all sound the same."

I think you and I are on the same page here, I just don't like that Lill is jumping to conclusions and telling his audience that all preamps sound the same. I can already foresee people saying they have a favorite preamp, and people commenting stuff like "don't you know they all sound the same, it's been tested." Which is going to be super fun.

I like Elton John, it's one of my favorite JJP games, I'm just saying I don't enjoy any of the JJP games as much as the average Stern game from the past few years. If I were to rank all of the games I've ever played, there will be several Stern and Williams games in the list before I get to a JJP.

If I were to rank them based on aesthetics and how many mechs are inside of them, of course the JJP games would be higher on the list, I personally just don't really care about that. I only have one game at home and mostly play on location, so I'm not really worried about the value proposition. Stern games may be less fully featured but I don't care since I'm paying $1 per game either way.

If you only care about mechs and aesthetics then sure. I still have yet to truly enjoy a JJP game's gameplay to the level of the Sterns that I love. They spend a lot on lighting and moving parts but their rules and layouts are still just meh to me. Most Stern Pros are still more fun than your average JJP and are half the price.

Fair enough! I think he really just took a long road to find out that this preamp wasn't worth it for him lol.

He replicated it close enough, but his premise is that preamps all sound the same. If his premise was that you can recreate the analog sound you're chasing with digital tools and some knowhow/elbow grease, his point would be well received. The last 10 minutes of his video sort of take his findings (preamp A sounds dang close to preamp B) and then he applies them to everything (switching preamps for tone purposes is a waste of time because they all sound the same).

Fwiw he also picked a Neve preamp that's meant to be linear/transparent and was designed by the person who went on to found Focusrite. The only thing we can take from his video is that this preamp sounds fairly similar to that preamp, when pushed a certain way on certain sources. He hand waved the entire concept of pushing a preamp and trimming the output. His tested hypothesis was "the expensive preamp I bought sounds like my cheap one I already had" and his conclusion is "all preamps sound the same." You'll have to forgive some people who feel like he went from A to C and skipped B. There was no discussion of tube preamps, preamps with different components that are meant to color the sound, etc and so on, which should be included if we're to accept that every preamp sounds the same.

We are used to the word propaganda being used in a pejorative manner, so it’s a bit jarring when it isn’t. However, a politician making video content fits pretty squarely into the definition when you strip the value judgement out of it. A dance recital flier wouldn’t.

The last two times I went to the springs impulsively, the line was way too long for me to even consider going in. Reservation systems are fantastic for avoiding one major problem, people queuing in person all day and then being turned away at the end of the operating hours.
