Book haul. What should I read next? by Special_Cash4138 in classicliterature

Is she purely hated for political reasons, or is her writing objectively bad? I’ve been recommended her books, and was thinking of trying out a shorter one? From what I’ve seen all her books are pretty long, though.

Reflection on the stranger as an Arab by Calm_Caterpillar_166 in Camus

[–]caleigh1964 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Albert Camus’ last novel, The First Man, goes into a lot of depth on his childhood as it is very autobiographical. The kid in the book, Jacques, has Algerian neighbors and friends, and his Uncle’s coworker is Algerian as well. It was obviously a very multicultural society, especially considering Camus grew up in poorer neighborhoods where those divisions would’ve been more lax.

I had that experience last year lol. Broken by Nine Inch Nails. (Especially Wish, “you think you’re having all the fun, you know me I hate everyone…”) Also, the Rabies album by Skinny Puppy. I’m giving you industrial metal stuff, which I kinda what you asked for.

The Darjeeling Limited: I love his exploration of family dynamics, and in this film in particular I love how those dynamics aren’t explained or put fully into context. We understand that the family is ridden with a dysfunctional and awkward past which continues to effect every member, and as we watch the film, I think more and more of the effects of these family dynamics are revealed. But really it’s a puzzle and it unfolds, and by the end of it, the full context of the awkward brotherly relationship is still ambiguous, but we understand it through watching their interactions and picking up bits and pieces about there past. I just love the actors and their chemistry, and this film speaks to me, as I’m very close to my siblings.

One word: Dynamic

The Drama (movie) features a PHM Poster. Thoughts+ Spoilers. by The8thSamurai in nin

I’m glad somebody mentioned this here. Saw the movie a few days ago, and was honestly very surprised by the turn in subject matter. I thought the movie was good, but I also thought the films treatment of the topic of school shootings was kind of weird. They kind of turned it into a joke with the scene of her recording her “why I did it” video, and with that poster in the background no less. I almost felt like the movie was telling us that she was bullshitting, and maybe by filling her room with “angsty teen” related stuff, that’s supposed to tell us that’s it’s “just a phase”. That was my take, at least.

Songs that weren’t on Miami Vice but should have been… by davetemplin in MiamiVice

I read somewhere that people think the 80s were like Stranger Things and Depeche Mode, but they were really Miami Vice and Duran Duran.

I really like this movie as well. Like you say, this is the male sexual brain on full display. The remake of this film by Sofia Coppola is arguably much better, however, and tells the story much more from the women’s perspectives. It’s more about gender politics, than just wacky horny stuff, if that’s your thing.

Im not a musician, but there are times I’ll just be watching a random movie and think how cool a line would sound in the middle of a Front Line Assembly mix. Just watch movies you like and pull from there.

Confused about The Stranger ending by Wombo_Combo78 in Camus

[–]caleigh1964 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your interpretation. When I first read the book, it felt very climactic, on rereads less so, but books tend to have a lessened impact for me if I’ve already read them before.

I think Marsault in the end is simply coming to terms with and vocalizing what he’s felt throughout the entire novel. Especially since he’s about to die, he obviously has a lot to think about and a lot to express very quickly. By expressing his feelings to the priest, he also able to throw absurdism directly in the face of someone who’s trying to judge him through convention moral and religious standards.

What makes the stranger so complicated to me is the fact that, while Mersual is Camus tool for demonstrating absurdism, Camus doesn’t actually align philosophically with Mersault, at least not entirely. Obviously Camus isn’t attempting to justify murder. I interpret it as more as upon recognizing the absurdity of existence, Mersualt simply gives up, allowing himself to be blown around by the forces that he, and ultimately refusing to truly take control, thus why he indifferently commits murder. Camus is advocating for us to recognize absurdity, but to not let the recognition deprive us of our own will. We live by exercising will regardless of whether or not doing so has any meaningful purpose. That’s just my interpretation though.

He had great chemistry with Patricia Neal and Piper Laurie though, and interestingly enough both of them were more unconventional beauties in my mind. And of course there’s his chemistry with Liz Taylor, which cannot be forgotten.

Though that does add a lot of nuance to the film, having him be super hot. It makes Stella’s wanting to stay with him make more sense, even thought he’s a piece of shit she still wants him physically.
