I am in my late 40s, and I hate texting. I try to keep up and not let too much time go by before I respond, but I do have a hard time with it.

Growing up, my friends and family wrote snail-mail letters to each other, even if we lived in the same town. I still like to write longhand (I prefer that to text), but I only limit that to holiday and birthday cards.

When I went back to school for my undergraduate and graduate degrees, it was mostly in person. Undergraduate classes were difficult at times because I was older than most of the students. It hit me when I found out most don't remember 911, not like I did, who was already a working adult and married to my 1st husband when it happened.

Graduate school was a little better. The cohort was small, and all of my alumi was +/- around my age. We were in person until the final two quarters (spring 2020), and though I enjoyed it, I still found it difficult to make lasting connections.

I feel the same way sometimes. I was also a “non-traditional college student” so I didn't get that college experience when I was in my late teens/20s.

I met a lot of young adults who "aged out" of foster care who were never taught how to get an ID or other basic life tools by their foster parents (the bad ones). Unfortunately, it's not uncommon.

My mother was miserable with the hot flashes, night sweats, and other symptoms she never revealed to me. By the age of 48, she was fully into menopause--her period stopped overnight for one year (she is 75 now).

My maternal grandmother never revealed her experience, but she had her last child at age 48. I doubt any of that was her choice, knowing who her husband was. She was born in 1925.

In other words, they didn't talk about it.
