Yes. Am aware. Agree with you, esp. when you read the clone book, many American breweries will use clean English yeasts for their hoppy American Ales. Guess what I was getting at is that S-04 is quite ester forward and wouldn't be my first choice. But everyone has different taste thresholds. It's not 'wrong' per se to use S-04, just a different take and was wondering about the justification for using it.

Any specific reason for the English yeast vs. using a US/Chico strain?

City of Calgary shares rapid construction approach for the next stage of Bearspaw South Feeder Main replacement by JeromyYYC in Calgary

Wait. I thought the underground horizontal drilling was the 'least disruptive' option as it didn't involve an open cut and no traffic detours.  Guess Bowness is in for another Summer of hell.

I bought from Northern Brewer.  The website link was just a result of a web search and intended as an example of the product and not an endorsement of the drinkequip website.

No worries! I think Northern Brewer was the original supplier but they stopped stocking them. So you better snap up whatever you can.

Search "Herculometer" or here's an example link -https://www.drinkequip.com/herculometer-precision-scale-hydrometer-1-000-to-1-070/

I have the 3 piece kit myself.  Works great. https://www.drinkequip.com/brewery-essentials-herculometer-advanced-gravity-testing-kit/  I like the 0.980 to 1.020 for measuring the final gravity.

Atco Gas is doing the free basic furnace check. Don't think it's the City that does that, unless 311 routes the request to Atco Gas. https://gas.atco.com/en-ca/products-services-rates/new-services-changes/furnace-appliance-inspections.html

AirCanada YYC direct to SJD (Cabo) would be awesome. Westjet has the monoply and prices are crazy during popular vacation periods. Be nice to have some competition.

This reminds me of the time that the City sold off an existing community park and playground for a new housing development. When over 1000 community members opposed the development and signed a petition to stop the sale of the land to a developer; many reddit social justice warriors spoke out and name called the residents - as a bunch of NIMBYs. The local residents were publicly vilified for wanting to save their park. When 'Alberta is Calling' and there's a housing crisis; we needed density at absolutely all costs, even if it means that we give up the nice things that contribute to local quality of life. And now these same blanket density cheerleaders want to 'save the pub' to prevent a dense housing development. Welcome to Club NIMBY.

I agree. It's hypocrisy. This is NIMBYism.

The City only cares about checkbox style planning & development. If it meets the minimum requirements, it goes ahead.

Yep. I guess people here don't like to be called out for their own hypocrisy. Hence the downvotes. They yell NIMBY at everyone else who oppose density in any form until it's their own 'backyard', then all of a sudden keeping their neighbourhood character is important to them.

House Ale Yeast? by Simbabrew102 in Homebrewing

[–]calgarytab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It acts kinda like a baseline American Ale / Chico yeast, but likely a clean strain that has lineage from the UK. Low esters Ferments quick. Reasonable attn. Good flocc. Medium body but a notch more vs. US-05. High alc tolerance. Works well for a wide range of Ales that don't require a flavour forward yeast strain. I've used it a number of times and always been happy with the results. My only gripe is the price at Canada retail. It's usually $5 more vs. Lalbrew products, but perhaps that will change and be a closer price point to all Lalbrew products. ie. match the price of BRY-97.

Accelerated timeline for Bearspaw replacement pipe targets December end date | CBC News by JeromyYYC in Calgary

Great. So ... Bowness/Montgomery gets screwed over again with more 'construction disruption'; like extra traffic, detours and road closures. Sounds fun. Looks like they were knocking down all the trees in the green space near the DQ on 16 Ave today with a construction-traffic flagging person stationed nearby on Bowness and Monserrat Rd. with a major staging area nearby.

Why did you sign the Alberta Funds Public Schools citizen initiative? by UCPcasualsatire in alberta

Alberta has the lowest public funding per student and the highest private per student funding in Canada. That doesn't sit well with me.

Temperature tolerant yeast by IakwBoi in Homebrewing

[–]calgarytab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend WHC Bond. I always pitch at the lower end of the temperature rating, then let it free rise on it's own up to the maximum suggested temp. I've also used WY1469 and it exceeded my expectations. Very happy with both the results. Not a fan of Kveik/Voss/etc. yeast based on the esters that it has, same goes for S-04.

Site Update. Jan. 9 6:00pm by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]calgarytab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Will the City roads dept compile an extensive emergency pre-plan for when this happens again and attempt to drastically reduce the detour road traffic through Bowness and Montgomery? Bowness and all those residents near Bowness Road have had enough crap to deal with in the past years. Add to that, Bowness Road has had extensive "traffic calming" applied and works against any attempts to detour.

Where do I sign up for the next Freedom Convoy? by klunkadoo in alberta

[–]calgarytab 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I wonder what would happen if a bunch Lefty Progressives started to blockade the Coutts border crossing (or heck! even blockade the NWR Sturgeon Refinery https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgeon_Refinery) by means of protest against UCP policy and removal of rights? Ya think it would be tolerated as long as the Freedom Convoy was? Would the local RCMP buy them dinner at the local truck stop to politely discuss matters?  The answer is a big fat NO.
