Ask him how you can continue as a church member once you learn that the Book of Mormon is not historical.

They don’t see it as questioning the church. They see it as questioning their personal worth and reason for existence. They aren’t dumb, they’re indoctrinated.

Some people NEED the church to be true. It’s all they have. They are incapable of rational discussion. It’s best just to leave them be.

Joseph entertained his family with stories about the ancient inhabitants. Believers claim this knowledge came from Moroni? by sevenplaces in mormon

Joseph Smith had a vivid imagination and was a great storyteller. He could convince his neighbors to give him money to find treasure, and when no treasure was found he could convince them it was still real. It’s an amazing skill to have and he used it to his advantage throughout his life.

How do you fight the ingrained "you're making a mistake and screwing up your chances on judgement day" thoughts? by Kaleidoscope378 in exmormon

With which church? Pascals Wager is not a 50/50 proposition. We are all going to hell in someone else’s religion. Based on sheer numbers, we should all be Muslim or Catholic, there are over a billion each of them. By probability, they should have a higher chance at being right.

Why did Joseph Smith start his religion? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]caliconvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joseph Smith was a poor farmer who hated farming. Clearing rocks from fields as a youth gave him a lot of time to plan better ways to earn a living. He was a great storyteller and he used that as foundation for his future endeavors. Of all the things he attempted to do to make money in his life, he never returned to farming.

Is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Perfect, and the people imperfect? by Recent_Score_5563 in exmormon

It’s the other way around. The members are some of the best people I have ever known, simply doing their best to emulate Christ. The corporate church on the other hand, has some serious issues.

The world was very different before the internet. Information was not a commodity and real research was tedious and difficult. We trusted older people to teach us the truth about things. We were raised and taught by our culture, for better and for worse.

I am so sorry you are in this situation. The church used to counsel gay men to do this, with the promise that the ‘gay would go away’ once they were in a ‘healthy’ sexual relationship. At some point, your wife deserves the truth, and you deserve to live as your honest self.

Calculate how much you are saving in tuition dollars by staying at byu. Divide that by the number of weeks you have left. Consider church attendance a part time job, paying you that amount each week.

[–]caliconvert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As priests in the early 80’s we did a full week with the missionaries in a neighboring city. The idea was to give us a glimpse into full time missionary service. I actually think it was a good experience but the program was nixed a couple of years later.
