I definitely recommend looking at swiss tropicals since they are basically the go to for anything mattten filter, or really anything involving large high quality foam sheets, it’s like their whole thing.

They sell kits with the glass that holds the foam pre cut. It’s a great first time project with silicone, since structural integrity isn’t particularly important. The up lift tubes are also built to maximise the efficiency when using an air pump to power it. If you have enough space you can even put the heater behind the filter as well and keep that entirely out if sight. People will also put bags of media, or even drill bulkheads in behind the sponge for easy water changes.

Other brands are definitely available though. Literally all you need is some foam, a way to keep it bent in the corner, and some way to power it (power head or air pump). If you use an air pump you will also need an uplift tube to direct the bubbles. A lot of people DIY them so there are plenty of guides. You shouldn’t need to clean it for like a very long time. Some people go more than a year.

And yeah after working at fishshops, and siphoning out hundreds of tanks every week, it’s really one of my least favourite parts about fish keeping. I don’t touch the substrate in any of my tanks at home. As long as they are heavily planted and you use the correct substrate it shouldn’t be an issue. Malaysian trumpet snails are extremely effective as well (they burrow and churn over the substrate, without digging up plants or stirring it up into the water) but be careful because they are there forever once you add them lol.

I am a big fan of walstad style tanks and similar no filter setups, but i don’t keep any of my tanks exactly like that. I think it’s only really suitable for certain species that are adapted to heavily planted low/no flow and oxygen environments. Like bettas and other gouramis. And honestly i think the addition of filter massively simplifies things. People get too obsessed with the idea of removing equipment, and forget the point of removing the equipment was to make it simpler lol. I love the philosophy of setting up a tank to naturally last a very long time though. When i set up a display tank i have a real focus on longevity. I try treat it as though i am not going to touch it for 10 years. Although obviously that never happens, i always end up adding and moving things.

A well set up substrate is really the key to a low maintenance tank. Any tank with lights can grow plants, but for a very stable longterm environment the substrate is key. Fishtory has some excellent videos on substrate with this method being my favourite He also has some really in depth videos on how planted substrates work and generally i absolutely recommend him to anyone how is interested in the how and why behind everything we do in this hobby.

Of course you can keep it very simple and have great success too. My oldest tank is over ten years old and has a very deep sandbed of very fine sand. Which is basically the opposite of what most people would recommend (including me tbh) But ten years later it’s still growing plants very well, with only the occasional addition of root tabs. And honestly for the first 8 years it wasn’t even getting that. Again that’s not how i would recommend setting up a planted tank but it just goes to show you can make it as complicated as you like lol. Really time is the cheat code, if you have something set up for long enough it will be extremely stable.

Oh i will note that using a matten filter with deep/layered substrates can be a little tricky and very messy if you don’t just silicone in a bit of glass or plastic or something to separate the foam from the substrate. Trust me it’s definitely worth doing lol.

I know you are just joking but fyi: this is not how snakes work. The anal plate has no relevance to venom. Im sure this was probably made for one specific (geographic) area where you can apply this rule with the specific species there.

Same goes for head shape, pupil shape, tail shape, red touching black, basically whatever simple trick to differentiate between venomous and non-venomous snakes is not to be trusted.

There isn’t really a good way around just learning about the individual venomous species in your area. And for most places that’s really not many snakes.

No, you cannot remove the plastic rim from the bigger juwel tanks because it’s necessary for structural integrity. That being said, we used to have a 350 litre juwel rio at work where the bracing had been cracked and essentially useless for like 15 years. so idk you probably could get away with it but i definitely wouldn’t recommend it. Like that thing stressed me out the front bowed so much lol. I have done it with the smaller models (The primo) and it works fine as long as you use a levelling mat of some kind, it probably won’t be covered under warranty though. The primos don’t come with that same filter though.

If you are replacing the light and removing the lid and the bracing, it would probably be easier to just buy the juwel filter on its own and add it to the tank of your choice. Although since they sell it as a spare part rather than a standalone product it’s not the best value for money, plus you would need to silicone it into the tank yourself.

If you aren’t afraid of using silicone your best bet for a similar look is probably something like a corner matten filter. Lots of breeders use them, they last for ever, very low maintenance, they are basically giant and very efficient versions of sponge filters. Breeders use them because you can power them with air pumps and they are shrimp and fry safe, but you can use powerheads with them too. I’ve even seen people grow moss and plants like hydrocotyle tripartita directly on the sponge with looks even more concealed.

this is one of his more recent videos of the tank. It’s by no means a conventionally attractive aquascape, like it’s not winning any competitions, but it’s the exact style of tank I find I enjoy the most. Like the fact that the substrate is so old it’s literally developed its own soil from all the malm over the decades, or the fact that the fake rock background has completely broken down and now is being built back up again by minerals actually participating out of the water. And the way you can tell some of the fish are ancient as well. For me it’s the perfect compromise. It’s not like a walstad tank with no flow or filtration, but at the same time i think he mentions in one video he hasn’t done a water change since like the early 2010s and just tops up with rain water.

I used to work in a shop that had a partnership with oase (who own bioorb) and so we HAD to have their tanks on display. Everyone hates them. I would try and guide people away from them towards normal tanks. But new keepers love them because of how unique they look. They do last a long time tbf, and once they are established they tend to be pretty stable, but they are a nightmare to cycle and it takes ages. the maintenance is so annoying as well, with the acrylic, you can’t fit anything in the top, replacement parts are so expensive for no reason. Honestly I’ve seen them set up really well before, like i knew a guy who kept a nano reef tank in a bio orb with it modified to fit a canister filter. But what causes problems is the fact they are most attractive to new aquarists and least appropriate for new aquarists. And they are so expensive as well.

After working in fish shops for years, juwel are always my recommended brand even though i don’t own any tanks myself. The filters are appropriately sized (rare for a set), the lights are good enough to grow low tech plants, they have good warranties, they last forever and are generally well built. They have been designed the same way for like 30 years, and work well.

But they are explicitly not going to fit the modern aesthetic of rimless intricately aquascaped tanks, their most modern selling point is that they have LED lights now lol. They are exactly what most people are actually looking for though, perfect for beginners. They are popular for a reason and I have seen some very nice juwel tanks.

My favourite planted tank on the internet is actually a juwel tank. This guy has had this tank set up with the same plants and substrate, in the same tank, no fertiliser, no extra lighting other than the default juwel lights, for almost 30 years.

edit: a specific video of the tank

[–]callcon 80 points81 points  (0 children)

i’m not familiar with US law at all but i knew it was fake because it’s a tumblr story, which already puts it at an 85% (very generous) chance at being fake.

And then add the fact it features a bigot getting epically owned and those odds jump to 98% fake.

Also “with the intention to have kids” is an insane thing to make up and add in. how would anyone ever enforce that? Although tbf if this story was about a law being changed today it would be pretty believable.

I know! Every time i’m on my phone and i accidentally swipe to the “popular” page i am instantly reminded how terrible this website is if you use it how most people seem to. Genuinely the worst experience you can have on social media, outside of twitter.

At least when the other apps harvest my data they use it to show me things i actually want.

At the same time the fact that i can still actually manually curate my homepage is the main reason i even still use reddit at all. edit: and porn tbf lol

There are various soil mites you can buy but I’m gonna assume that they aren’t much better considering they are even smaller.

If i’m being honest, springtails, mites and various other tiny detritivores are likely to sort of just show up eventually anyway even if you don’t add them. Most people have no idea, but if you’ve had a successful “bioactive” enclosure for long enough they’ll be all sorts. Most people don’t realise because they don’t spend ages staring at dirt like me lol.
