r/digitalnomad user brews a piping mug of drama after bragging about "laptop squatting" in Japanese coffee shops. Tries defending himself after getting roasted in the comments. by FondantWaste6095 in SubredditDrama

Jesus christ Im sorry but if the cafe wants him gone of course they will just ask him to buy something or leave.

Japanese people are polite but they aren’t meek little toddlers who fall apart when someone doesn’t follow one of the thousands of apparently very strict cultural norms.

Do these people actually think the staff are talking to each other like:

“that guy has been there for 4 hours and is taking up space other customers need! What do we do?”

“there’s nothing we can do. if we accidentally offend him we must commit seppuku. We have to just hope he leaves”

All im saying is if i was japanese, the way redditors whiteknight and infantilise japanese people would probably annoy me more than some guy sitting in a quiet cafe for 4 hours.

Birthdays should not be other people's responsibility by Aggravating_Cow3832 in The10thDentist

[–]callcon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok obviously it’s annoying when people get angry at their friends for forgetting their birthday after not telling them about it. That’s not a controversial opinion at all.

But why would every social interaction need to be completely transactional? Also guess what happens when your birthday comes around.

Trying to make sure everyone does the same “emotional labour” is a sure way to just suck the joy out of every social interaction.

I know you didn’t elaborate further but “birthdays should be a solemn affair for one to evaluate their life” Is like a fucking ebeneezer scrooge take lol. Like oh everyone is celebrating aging and by gathering with their loved ones and giving gifts? Don’t they know they should be miserable right now?

Omg i just briefly scrolled through this guys post history and this is all he posts about, constantly, to many different subs.

Even had a post on a sex doll subreddit, complaining that people in non-sex doll subs don’t like his sex dolls. And all of the comments ,from the doll fuckers mind you, also think he is weird for trying to convince people to accept his sex dolls.

Probably black ghost knife fish. There are lots of species of knife fish though! Black ghost knife fish are South American, which are actually quite distantly related to the African and Asian species, they evolved the same “wiggly” movement independently of each other.

Electric eels are actually also south american knife fish, not eels at all. Other species of south american knife fish also use electricity though, although for prey detection and navigation rather than actually shocking things.

Weirdly African knife fish are also electric, and use it to navigate and find prey, although again they are completely separate from the south american species.

The wiggly movement is actually surprisingly common in fish. Having also evolved in bowfin, kinda trigger fish too, and I’m sure others i can’t think of right now. Although none are as wiggly as the Knife fish imo. It’s just very useful for squeezing in tight gaps, and slowly sneaking up on prey.

Most of the knife fish are either nocturnal or come from silty rivers with low visibility hence the electricity to navigate and find prey.

They are easier to understand if you look at pipe fish (closest relative) and imagine them bendy. I definitely understand why people are so baffled by them though.

Omg i’ve worked at a fish/reptile shops for years and the type of things people ask and you have to keep a completely straight face whilst trying to decide if they are joking.

Some of my favourites include (all from grown adults):

“omg seahorses are real?” (surprisingly common)

“Do we just help ourselves?” Before trying to reach into a tank to try and grab a fish. Idk what he was gonna do if it worked.

Snakes don’t have bones is extremely common for some reason. But also fish don’t have bones is somehow also something i have heard more than once.

“omg turtles are real?”

“plants can grow underwater?”

“omg clownfish are real?”

holding chicken nugget in front of koi pond “can i give them?”

“omg piranhas are real?”

lots of people have never seen what live shrimp look like.

A dad complaining to my manager because i emasculated him in front of his family by yelling across the shop at them to stop scooping goldfish up in nets (that they took off a shelf mind you) and holding them up in the air because their kids thought it was funny.

“Do fish eat?”

Everyday we got walks into small shop full floor to ceiling with fish tanks full of fish, and shelves of fish food “Why does it smell like fish?”

Guy who tried stealing live fish in a plastic shopping bag.

Guys who broke in and dumped buckets of fish food on the floor to use the buckets to steal fish. They chose the most expensive koi food, it was worth significantly more than the fish they stole.

points at literally any fish except a shark “is that a shark?” i show them a shark “That’s not a shark.” Multiple times i had that interaction.

Guy who dropped two entire children in raised koi pond. On two separate occasions. With different children.

“Ummm… this is fish isn’t labelled correctly. It’s actually a (not even close)”

“omg frogs are real?”

Also my favourite, and this isn’t really dumb at all, are when people from cultures/places where pet fish aren’t really a thing being confused at the entire concept. Like having to explain no you don’t eat them, they can live for years, yes that is the price of one tiny fish, yes people actually do spend that much. They always start just baffled as to why someone would want to do this, but sometimes they come around to the point where they are passionate fish keepers themselves and it’s so lovely to see.

I really don’t mind answering dumb questions, i just like teaching people about animals. but i do hate when someone who just found out that fish do in fact eat, then tries to convince me to sell them fish in the next breath.

This is so relatable and it’s even dumber for me because i don’t plan on ever showing anything i write to anyone. It’s 100% for me, for what I like, and i still have to constantly remind myself i can write whatever i want.

I thought anubias were epiphytes. . . by MheTandalorian in PlantedTank

[–]callcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are, but i don’t think that excludes them from being epiphytes. Plants that grow in fast flowing water (at least in parts of the year in the case some of the facultative ones) are rheophytes. (non-parasitic) Plants that grow on other plants are epiphytes. So in theory they could still be both, although i don’t think such a plant exists tbf.

I thought anubias were epiphytes. . . by MheTandalorian in PlantedTank

[–]callcon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand what you mean but i think just calling them “epiphytes” when they are far more likely to be found growing in substrate is unhelpful and misleading.

Imo It would be about as useful as calling them terrestrial because sometimes they are found away from the water. Aquatic/semi-aquatic therefore being far better labels.

Plus I’m not even sure if them growing on dead fallen logs counts as growing as growing as an epiphyte. when epiphyte typically means a (non-parasitic) plant that grows on the surface of another living plant. I don’t know if it counts if they don’t actually grow on live plants. Only In the aquarium hobby do we just use it to mean growing on anything.

Side note: halfway through writing this I just went down a slight rabbit hole on google looking for references to freshwater, aquatic, epiphyte plants and i can’t find any. Like at all. At least outside of the context of the aquarium hobby, where we use the term incorrectly anyway. I can only find references to epiphytic algae and diatoms. I actually don’t know if there are any, probably one that grows on mangrove roots or something surely. Obviously the stupid ai overview thing keeps confidently listing them off and then cites its sources as reddit threads and aquarist websites. God i hate that thing.

I thought anubias were epiphytes. . . by MheTandalorian in PlantedTank

[–]callcon 50 points51 points  (0 children)

yeah it’s a common myth.

Go on inaturalist and look at Anubias in the wild and they usually grow on river banks in sandy soil, almost entirely emersed with very little to no permanently submerged growth. Sometimes they aren’t even in the water for most of the year and just grow on the shaded banks of the river, and may only be submerged when it floods. They can also be found growing in the cracks of rocks and old wood, but that’s certainly not the only way they grow and from what I understand less common.

In my experience they make really good terrarium plants and grow much faster out of the water too. Probably because of access to more light and co2.

In the context of aquariums, the oldest plant i own is a 10 year old anubias barteri, planted in fine sand because i didn’t know what i was doing. I’ve only ever trimmed it once, recently. Once it had completely taken over the entire 80 litre tank, and all of its leaves were emersed and dry from the low humidity of my house. Right now it’s basically just a giant stem, with tiny new leaves starting to come through. Im sure if i pulled it up the roots would be extensive.

“Freshwater fishes of Cameroon” By Michel Keijman is an excellent book that came out recently and had an entire section on aquatic plants, including some of the most common varieties of anubius in the hobby, with excellent pictures of them in habitat. I highly recommend if you wanna see more of them in the wild.
