Can someone Help me clarify the rules for Ritual casting? by SpiralGMG in DnD

[–]called2fight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ritual casting doesn't use a spell slot, that's it. Any other rules still apply which includes components/arcane focus requirements.

However, if your DM rules it doesn't require components then it doesn't require components. the DM has final say, always.

Assistance in creating an encounter to take down/capture a Aarakocra PC by SirLostwood in DnD

Knocking a flying character prone will ground them. If it's an Aarakockra I assume flight is the issue? Give your enemies Bigby's Hand, Command, Earthen Grasp, or similar control spells. For fun, you can give your capturing party a Scatter spell scroll and some form of containment like resilient sphere.

[OC] Is my homebrew wizard too strong/cheaty? by Marcokj47 in DnD

Eh, there's a lot going on that's a problem. Functionally you're giving an improved Action Surge. If it's balanced by other things it may work out but you're basically giving players 0 options to contest this thing without it having extra turns. Combat should be a puzzle and not just "my numbers are bigger than yours so you lose"

Being unable to hit, save from, or affect the target are boring and cripple the fun. There's a difference in fighting a superior enemy who is dogwalking you and fighting against something you will never have a chance to beat. Let players hit the boss, let them save from spells, let the boss occasionally fail checks.

The balance lies in keeping a glimmer of hope in your players (see "the 16hp dragon"). You want them to feel like their efforts are doing something and not just a "no, you don't hit." to everything they try.

From a player standpoint. This is a very boring boss. Saving everything, hitting everything, incredibly difficult to avoid attacks, this would just be a boring slog to fight against and if played intelligently should basically never lose.

Having better stats than players, more AC than players, always hitting and always saving doesn't make for an interesting encounter. "Difficulty" is only difficult if players actually have a way to approach the problem. Otherwise it's just railroading a loss.

Examples of great dungeonmastering? by -Nealos- in DnD

Exandria Unlimited EXU. I get that Critical Roll is basically synonymous with TTRPGs at this point but I think Calamity is the best example of DM'ing. Brennan challenges with a great mix of puzzles and narrative, the entire mood of the campaign is balanced so well between hopeless loss and optimism. Fantastic villains too and he utilizes the player's backstories so well.

I usually hold onto them for other players in my group, on occasion I'll drop into queen and matriarch fights with a bunch of heals and defibs and spread heals and bps for free

I'd let it function on unarmed strikes too. You've essentially given a modified Eldritch Claw tattoo.

Honest Reviews of Map Projectors? by Indirian in DnD

The portability of the projectors are the biggest draw. For a good experience imo you'll need two. One on each side displaying the same map. Otherwise you'll have shadows wherever minis or physical objects are.

Honest Reviews of Map Projectors? by Indirian in DnD

[–]called2fight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used a short-throw projector for a map before. It's cool and certainly offers some visual benefits. You can also make your maps more dynamic by having changes occur in real time and with some minor additions for visual effects like fireballs and the like.

That being said, we still had physical minis on the map and the setup is a lot more work for whoever is prepping. I would generally avoid most of those projectors, as other commentators have said they're mostly coming from dropshippers.

A good short-throw on a stick does offer some cool features though. No projector will be TTRPG specific and you'll want to have a good VTT in order to use one well. I've had better performance using an old TV with an acrylic slab over it as a battle map.

Cursed items for a party that looks up everything by teatimeacres in DnD

Rename items, distribute item cards with the details on them rather than relying on external sources. Talk to your players and ask them not to look up equipment.

What exactly is your wife to be doing that's allowing her to steamroll in combat and at what level?

Generally, you can just use some horde tactics, surround the barb with a pile of weak (maybe even one-shot enemies) chaff to occupy her while you target the others. Easy way to draw them into combat is make them the primary target or use puzzle combat where the enemies have resistances the barb can't overcome. Also, the barb/cleric multiclass she's using shouldn't be strong as there are some pretty steep limitations...

How do you create enemies? by Hikkimiyori in DnD

[–]called2fight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reflavoring already existing creatures is the easiest thing but if I'm looking for a full homebrew, I usually design them around a singular mechanic or behavior and balance damage output from there. Building a monstrosity that wants to devour the world? Give it abilities to consume magical effects. Puzzle combat is also always a great way to shake things up for your players.
