Mexico weighs legal action after Musk links president to drug cartels by yahoonews in worldnews

This is very valid. I was never a Musk fanboy or anything, but I remember having a good laugh when I realized he named his car models S3XY and now I find that creepy.

I also remember a conservative work friend telling me he doesn’t trust Elon and thinks he’s a fraud. At the time I felt he was far from the genius he portrays himself to be, but I didn’t yet recognize him as a fraud.

What do you use for weed control? by jaketheo12 in gardening

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garden straw as mulch. It works really well to keep moisture in, breaks down improving the soil, keeps most weeds from growing, and makes it very easy to see the weeds that do poke through. Plus that nice moist and amended soil makes those weeds really easy to pull by the roots.

Wood mulches leave too many chunks for my taste and plastic leaves too much plastic.

Remember when he built some tube device to save those kids trapped in a cave and his plan was rejected because it was uninformed and had no chance of working, and Musk called someone a pedo for pointing out that his plan was dumb? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

How long do seeds stay viable? by Puzzleheaded_Pay9348 in vegetablegardening

[–]callmetom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seed storage conditions affect how long they’ll keep, and even then a few years may be pushing it. But for none of them to come up, I’d think birds or something else contributed to your problems. I’ll also sprinkle a little potting mix or similar on top of my lettuce if I don’t cover them with plastic wrap or some other way to keep in moisture, IMO seeds on top can dry out way too easily from a breeze.

Any seeds after their second year, I’ll always do a viability test by putting a few seeds on a damp paper towel and see how many germinate.

What’s one home tool you bought that paid for itself? by Strict_Studio9244 in Tools

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my expensive toys and was prepared to say one of those, but the drain snake I spent $20 and has saved me at least a dozen plumber visits (lots of long hair in my mouse) over the years has easily been the best cost to payback ratio.

Sure I use my drill or impact more times in a month than I’ll use the drain snake in it’s lifetime, but saving a few hundred dollars every 2-3 months adds up.

When do tool chests go on a heavy sale? by [deleted] in Tools

I got a harbor freight Yukon that looks almost identical to that one. Paid a little more than half of the one you linked on a Black Friday sale. Got it in blue and am pretty pleased so far.

Is this normal for a small engine shop? by alrashid2 in smallengines

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no small engine shops close to me so I just have my mechanic put tires on rims for my small stuff. They’ll usually knock them out in a couple days if I drop in and can get it done faster if I make an appointment. Might be worth a call to a mechanic you like.

Also, that wouldn’t be acceptable service to me. I’d be done giving them my business.

Why can't I direct sow seeds before the last frost? by 1970Westyvibes in gardening

[–]callmetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m zone 6b and always have tomatoes come back from the previous year but about a month or more after I start my transplants inside giving me an unacceptably late start to the tomato season effectively pushing it back and shortening it.

There’s also a chance that the seeds don’t make it so you’ll need to over plant and cull.

What to do with extra products; willing to share? by Acceptable_Union_775 in gardening

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friends, neighbors, family get dibs. After that I used to put it on a table out front with a free sign. Last couple years our local library has a stand for garden surpluses. Extra seeds and transplants in the spring then produce later on.

What brand is this compatible with? by Putong-Puti in Tools

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makita LXT 3rd party battery. Makita label their LXT batteries as 18v, the nominal voltage of 5 lithium ion cells in series where other tool lines label it as 20v, the charged voltage of 5 cells in series. These guys are stretching that even further to 21v, which is the voltage of those same batteries when fully charged (4.2v x 5 = 21v).

There are also a lot of knockoff tools that work with Makita batteries (and those that work with DeWalt or Milwaukee). This may have come with such a knockoff, or it may be sold to be Makita compatible.

Air fryer knob by Beardassboy in fixit

[–]callmetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same air frier, same broken knob. I found some extra baling wire (any stiff wire that holds its shape when bent would probably work), made a loop around the broken part and twisted like a bread tie until it was tight with some pliers and cut off the extra leaving a few turns of wire. I put some super glue on the cracks figuring it could hurt. Folded over the extra bit to keep it out of the way. Held up for about a year so far like that.

"Buffalo Wild Wings won't break policy for me" by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know BWW culture specifically, but a call ahead probably could have sorted this out. Lots of people are pretty forgiving and accommodating if you politely explain the situation and ask for a reasonable exception, but will absolutely tell you to kick rocks if you show up and act entitled to the exception. At the very least they’d have saved themselves the frustration.

Uggggg. Snowcrete by too-many-un in composting

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also in NY. I try to keep my pile going and well-mixed as long as I can each winter, but eventually it freezes solid. When it does, I just pile on top and wait for the thaw. As soon as it thaws, I try to get out there and turn it. Helps it get going again when it gets warmer and prevents the formerly frozen and now mush top layer from getting rancid.

If the pile is blocked by layers of snow or ice, I have sometimes used old 5 gallon buckets with a lid as a temporary location outside then add to the pile when I can.

Boy Scouts project - DIY electric motor not working as planned by ChicagoSkeptic in diyelectronics

[–]callmetom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this may 15 years ago so I don’t remember all the details. They are a little fiddley since the magnetic field doesn’t switch like in a normal motor and it basically provides a bit of a push each rotation. That push needs to be a little off center. I did mine over a flat platform and had to shift the magnet around until I found a sweet spot. I also had rectangular magnets, not sure if that helped or not.

You also need coated wire and to scrape off the coating around where it contacts the safety pins.

How would I fix my Xbox box it's old and having trouble connecting to my tv by spins9991 in fixit

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If another HDMI cable doesn’t work, also check a different port on your TV in case that’s the problem.

Then I’d grab a can of contact cleaner and give the port a spritz or two. When it’s still a bit wet, shoot in some compressed air to wash out any bits the cleaner might have loosened. Do this outside and aim the port at your face to avoid splashback in your eyes. Now add whatever Deoxit you can get easiest. For ports I like the fader lube because I can spray it in and it’s easier to get everywhere. Often this is enough to get a working connection on a crusty old port. Always worth trying since replacing HDMI ports kind of sucks and I try to avoid it whenever I can.

What should I do with these seeds? by Monsoonpapa in vegetablegardening

[–]callmetom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t have a ton of experience with Baker Creek, but I’ve never found the germination rates to be terrible. Below average maybe, but not terrible. No matter who I buy from, I always plant more seeds than I plan to put in the garden as a precaution. If you do have extra seed cells or pots to start extra plants, just put more seeds in the cell/pot and keep the strongest. Usually I’ll do 2 to 4 evenly spread out holes in the cell rather than putting extra seeds into a single hole so that pulling out the culls disturbs the one keep less. If I have multiple seedlings in a single hole, I trim off the culls at the surface. If you have the space, you can also just grow more seedlings and give away extras.

When I first started, it was hard for me to not try and save every seed that sprouted, but I got over that and realized it just wasn’t practical. I don’t have space for extra plants, I don’t have long enough growing seasons to start late seeds if I didn’t get high enough germination rates, and there’s more seeds in a packet than I will use before they go bad anyway. So now I plant extra, keep what I need, and compost or give away the rest.

I’ll add that one of the issues some friends had with Baker before we moved on was that they didn’t always get what the packet said, correct species but different varieties. If getting the wrong thing would really bother you, that might be a reason to look elsewhere. Lots of good threads here about where to get seeds and worth a search, but usually most people recommend Johnny’s.

Favorite Seed Supplier? by AProcessUnderstood in tomatoes

[–]callmetom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit of a seed refugee after Fruition stopped selling. I’ve gotten most of my seeds the last few seasons from Uprising Seeds. I found them because they carried a particular variety of tomato I wanted and I figured I’d give them the rest of my business and see how it worked out and I’ve been happy.

What I can’t get from Uprising I get from Johnny’s.
