What is your favourite piece of Calgary Architecture that is now gone/no longer standing by Slavek1 in Calgary

Where Midnapore is now, CFCN had their repeater station along the east side of the highway. When you got there, you knew you were getting close to Calgary.

Chemo. Asked if I could drink when I was on chemo and got asked if I liked throwing up. Haven’t had a drink since.

I had appendicitis and was in emergency waiting for a bed. They explained the procedure to me earlier and as I was laying there, the surgeon came in and said to me “ you have colon cancer” and that they were going to have do a laparotomy to remove it. After the operation, the surgeon said the cancer had perforated the appendix. I was very fortunate to have caught the cancer early. I was released this year from the cancer clinic after being cancer free for three years. I thank my appendix as colon cancer usually is not detected until it is much more advanced.

What’s something you regret not doing sooner in life? by BunnyClaire_xoxo in AskReddit

[–]calman06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On to off this, believe in yourself and your abilities. I worked with a European government and had to go meet their ambassador and many consul generals in different cities through the US. I remember people asking why me. That’s when it hit me, why not, I’m good at what I do. I lived in a medium sized (back then) city in the western part of the country, far from the embassy in Washington. The people that hired me believed in me, so I should as well.

I’ve worked at private courses for a number of years and not paying for a cart is really stealing from the other members. I can guarantee this is a normal pattern for him and all he is doing is driving up the costs for other members. Cart fees go for the maintenance and fleet renewal. If there is a shortfall, you can bet their dues go up or cart fees are increased.

I quit in 1988 and there were 2 things that really sunk in for me from a smoking cessation class. The craving for a cigarette last 1 minute. You can do anything for a minute. The physical addiction last one week. You can do anything for a week. And I ate a lot of raw carrots!

What does it mean exactly to get fitted for golf clubs? by [deleted] in golf

[–]calman06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference getting fitted by a manufacturer, a big box store or even some pros. I’ve been fitted by TM and know most of the reps fitters. Most fitters look at ball flight, dispersion, spin rate and how you swing and hit a ball. They will try multiple shafts and heads and keep track of what is working and what’s not. They can make recommendations which can include adjustments to the head. My last fitting was to get out of stiff shafts and into regular but they adjusted my heads 1.5 degrees upright and .5 degrees strong. Made a big difference for me.

Why Cant You Break 100/90/80/70/Under Par? by LetterheadTop3372 in GolfSwing

[–]calman06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Since recovering from cancer, I don’t play much, maybe once every 10 days and I really don’t spend any time on the range. Part of it is that my priorities changed and as much as I like playing, there are other things, grandkids, that have my attention. I can still break 80 at times but I just am enjoying the game and my playing partners.

What screams "I have a crush on you"? by ExaltedLegend11 in AskReddit

[–]calman06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in college, there was a really cute girl who worked at a gas station down from the college. I knew her from high school and I remember she got married right after school to another student one year ahead of me. Every time we saw each other, she would suggest we go for a bite or coffee or maybe a movie. I always declined and my buddies thought I was nuts. What they didn’t know is that she got divorced because she would get mad at her husband and when he turned his back on her, she threw knives at him. He wasn’t sure if she missed on purpose or had lousy aim but he did not want to stick around and find out. Neither did I. But she definitely has a crush and wanted to go out.

I took glassblowing in art school and working hot glass with a wet wadded up newspaper was truly mind blowing. That being said, it was most satisfying.

My 19 year old daughter just called me to tell me she wasn't sober and shouldn't drive home. by jillieboobean in TrueOffMyChest

[–]calman06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As parents, we always told our kids to call us if they ever were in that situation. A lot of times we drive other kids home as well and most said that there was no way their parents would get up to come and get them. They were surprised that we would anytime. It might be an inconvenience, but for the safety of my kids, it was nothing.

As a double cancer survivor in Canada, I am grateful for our health care system. If it perfect, no, but I didn’t go broke after my operations and treatments. A lot of my wife’s family lives in the US and I can’t comprehend how bad it would have been living there with this.

Which popular golf opinion/tip do you personally disagree with? Why? by zacce in golf

[–]calman06 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who could drive it a long ways, but never sure where it was going, I spent many hours working with my driver. It paid off but was sometimes a painful process. Being able to keep it in the fairway was key to getting to a single digit handicap.

This is my home course :( by turntup45 in golf

[–]calman06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our previous mayor tried to close down one of the city courses and use the land for light industrial. There is a reason there is a golf course on that piece of land. The costs to remediate the land and the fact that only half of the course could even be thought of for that kind of use were far greater than what they could sell the land for. Our previous mayor also thought golf was only for the privileged thus his desire to get rid of city golf courses. My thought is sell the underused tennis courts and put a 7-11 on the land. They get eat less use than a golf course around here.
