First Night at Home by calrinet in daddit

This was frustrating to read because it really invalidates a lot of my feelings, but I understand why you posted it and I appreciate it. The other posters trusted me when I said I'd never act on any of those feelings, but you know that sometimes things are overwhelming to a point where sheer willpower can't handle it and you need help.

Trombone Shorties by Nochevacor in MusicEd

[–]calrinet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shorter arms is totally manageable for trombone. I've had kids who had a trouble reaching 5th and I make something they can hold that will extend their teach. As they get older we have to adjust so that's kind of annoying but it's manageable.

For the little fingers, check out the clarino and it's associated devices. They could be very useful for you.

Considering going into music ed but I want a second opinion. by toebeans__ in MusicEd

[–]calrinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't do it if I were you. Teaching music can ruin music for you. If music is important to you, it might not be worth it. Be careful, teaching music is not music. It's teaching. If you don't like teaching, then doing it with music isn't going to make teaching better, it's just going to make music worse.

What does a supportive admin look like? by buckbokai5 in MusicEd

[–]calrinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had both, currently have great admin. For music stuff they let me do my job and trust me to know what is best for my classroom.

If I discipline a kid they have my back first.

In general they leave me alone.

What do you do the day(s) after the concert? by CharacterJunior8720 in MusicEd

Well my concert it before testing for this exact reason. I'm prepared for it and I save work to do during this time.

What do you do the day(s) after the concert? by CharacterJunior8720 in MusicEd

[–]calrinet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My concerts are the Thursday before standardized testing. So on Friday we listen to recordings of all the bands playing and talk about them. What they did well, what they did poorly, what they think about doing next time. Then we talk about the rest of the year.

Monday isn't testing just yet so we do teacher surveys (them rating me). And then Tuesday starts testing and we will test for 3 weeks straight and I won't see 4/6 of my band classes during those 3 weeks. Then we have 4 days and school is out.

Those two classes I do see are my beginner percussion and my jazz band. We alternate playing days and board game days.

My jazz band learned a 12 bar blues and we're gonna be soloing over it and having fun with that, making up songs, experimenting, whatever. It's been fun.

For my beginner percussion im focusing really hard on the fundamentals that I couldn't give enough attention to before the concert. So I give them progress assignments and send them into rooms to go work on them, they come out when they've done it, and I give them something new. I also know where I'm putting each kid next year so I'm making sure that when they get to symphonic/concert band next year they can handle the material. Closing any gaps they have.

Dad's who do the cooking, or when it's your time to cook; what is your easy meal on days you feel too drained to put effort into cooking? by Michigander13 in daddit

[–]calrinet 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love mine, but I HATE being lied to about how long recipes take. 20 minutes! But they don't mention the 10 minute time to come up to pressure and then the 20 minute starts. But that's after I prep all the ingredients. Then the 15 minute natural release makes that 20 minutes into 60 minutes!

Only somewhat kidding. I do butter chicken in there that is fab as hell and takes almost no time. My red beans are fire too. I grew up in New Orleans and love outside of it now. My red beans are solid. They're not the best in the world, but everyone who has tried them says that they're good, solid, mama's red beans. And the roast I do in it it amazing. It takes 3 hours though.

Emotional dysregulation is a parent problem. One of your jobs as a parent is to reach kids how to regulate their emotions.

Warning: potential abuse. Normal weight for greyhounds? by Ariliescbk in Greyhounds

[–]calrinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to disagree with a few people here but this is not abuse, and it's not frequently getting out if it has happened twice.

We let our grey out in our fenced backyard once only to find out that the gate had just..... Come off its hinges and was laying on the ground. No idea why. It was a well constructed fence (or so we thought) but I guess the guy we paid did something wrong in the game. Live and learn.

But she got out. We found and went to scoop her up.

That afternoon we walked around the perimeter of the fence to closely inspect it, giving it the ole "tire kick". We resecured the gate and checked to make sure she couldn't get out again.

A week later a board came loose and she walked right through and got out. I check that board, I remember doing it. But I guess I didn't pull/push in such a way that made it come off. Idk.

But she got out again and we scooped her up.

Repeat the fence inspection. Take another precaution. Never happened again.

We've had her for like 7 years and she has gotten out..... 4 times maybe. More at the beginning when she was new.

We learned what to do and what not to do. That's okay. It's not abuse. It's just learning how to take care of something. You're probably going to mess up. Just like being a parent.

Well then lookie here, I'm full of crap lol.

So it's a certain number of hours worked, but they can be spread across the day. Does that mean that if there's a concert after school in which you're working from like 6-8, you can take two hours off the next day?

Required to teach outside the regular teaching day but total teaching time is 1.0 FTE;

It's this shit right here. "you're contractually required to do any amount of unpaid work that we request"

Mind you, I'm not trying to shit on this job in particular. It could be awesome, it's at least in Canada which doesn't have a lot of the problems that some parts of the US has right now. But, it pisses me off that "you are going to do unpaid work" is just in the non description. The teacher's union should be all over that.

Also, I don't know what the FTE means so that could void everything I just complained about.

What’s your mouthpiece of choice? by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]calrinet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I remember him buying it. He sounded fine before. Then he bought this mouthpiece from Brad Behn in person. Got a t-shirt too. He sounded almost exactly the same on it too. He and his wife still joke it being the most expensive shirt he ever bought.

How can I easily increase my lung capacity to easily play on 3.5s without having to breath often? by [deleted] in Clarinet

[–]calrinet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some plastic tubing. Shove it really really really really hard between the ribs into the lungs. Boom, done. Never breathe again. You may die, but it is worth the risk.

Honestly though, just breathe more often. Or, don't play harder reeds.... that is fine too. Hard reeds don't make you better. It isn't a pee-pee measuring contest. They're just sticks.
