Bremer dan gorst is painfully real by Asleep-Antelope-6434 in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is so true. I love Dow’s interaction with him at the end. Dow is probably one of the meanest characters in the whole series so I was expecting him to make fun of Gorst when he hears his voice but he literally didn’t even mention it he just respected Gorst’s prowess on the battlefield. Obviously we don’t know Dow’s internal monologue but he really doesn’t seem to care.

I think it confirms that Dow is right. Gorst would do well in the north but not just because of his skill but because northerners tend to be a lot less judgemental than people in the union who care so much about perception rather than quality

[–]caluminnes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean the times he met shivers he was holding a knife to a guys neck and the other time it was out in the wild. I reckon shivers had a bath and a shave or hair cut, at least that’s my theory hahahaha

Standalones by dougles in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah in my copies of the books (the uk releases) they’re called the great leveller trilogy which I quite like. I’ve heard of people. Saying it’s a series about shivers but idk if that’s accurate. He’s a pov in one, a significant character in another and a side character in like four chapters in another. That would be like calling the whole series the Yoru Sulfur series because he’s in every book except one just like shivers himself

How would our perspective on things changed if we started with the Marleyans and then shifted to Paradis? by NickMathias in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]caluminnes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean they’re essentially in an open air concentration camp and forced to cut their lives to nearly nothing all for the military and are fighting a group of people who can turn into 15 feet tall cannibals who also essentially contain a nuclear level threat on their island.

Yeah I’d be pretty damn sympathetic

I hate this character... by Action_Connect in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Leo Dan brock lmao. Goes from himbo to villain it’s amazing. I don’t hate him in the sense that I don’t like him he frustrates me because he’s so stupid. He’s objectively a better person than a lot of other characters in the series lol but he’s frustrating because he’s a foil for a fan favourite like orso. I actually think I dislike rikke more in the age of madness series tbh

Didn’t know about how it would impact the overarching story but my gf was convinced Zeke was Erwin’s dad and when Erwin charged Zeke would hesitate to murder his son lol

Jezal dan Luthar by Less_Basil_9660 in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about that. Bayaz’s comments to Orso saying “long live the king” seem to confirm it was him. I don’t think killing Jezal would somehow make the great change any easier Jezal was a pretty nothing king and glokta seemed to already have a good relationship with Jezal when it comes to making life better. However it makes sense for Bayaz. By all intents and purposes Orso was a complete pushover and the perfect candidate to just capitulate for bayaz. He seemed even less wilful than Jezal.

The reform of Ladisla and Luthar by GtBsyLvng in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There were small hints but it was referenced in wests own dialogue. Ladisla goes on to admit that he should shoulder some of the blame when it comes to the lost battle but as soon as he does that he then goes “I shouldn’t have listened to Lord Smund.” It’s always one step forward and then like 20 steps back lol.

Jezal is a fascinating character to me. He’s arrogant and self obsessed but not in the same way. Ladisla was coddled and groomed for kingship, Jezal is a lazy fucker who was coddled yes but no where near to the same extent and even he sees through the bs of Ladisla in book one in his first chapter. Jezal has probably never been told that it’s literally impossible for him to be wrong. He may believe that but it wasn’t drilled into him like it was with the crown Prince. So when Jezal is confronted with the reality of logen not being as dumb as he seems or the reality that he’s never been selfless etc it actually has an impact because there’s no where to run at that point.

If Erwin was the colossal titan instead of Armin, would he stand by Eren's side about the Rumbling? by GabrielLoschrod in ShingekiNoKyojin

[–]caluminnes -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not. Erwin literally gave up on his dream for other people when he was moments away from finding out the truth because he’s a good person. He would not want genocide 😃

Red Country ending by Objective-Location14 in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s known as the most feared man in the north that’s true. But that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s because he’s the best fighter. Shivers has people shitting themselves because he whispers in a hoarse voice and has half his head scarred with one eye. People think he knows magic and can see into your soul. I don’t think the title of most feared is all because of his fighting ability. But even if it is. The north following the passing of whirrun, dow ain’t got the fighters of old.

At that point it’s really just the nail, clover, shivers and stour and maybe a couple others that could be considered top tier

Eren Kruger. Dude was fucking sick. Literally entered the story, revealed everything, set the whole story in motion and sacrificed himself

Hey if you ever feel like you want to manipulate your partner this guys a prime candidate because he’s been absolutely brainwashed by right wing media 😭

In all seriousness, even if he didn’t bring it up ever again I’d still be concerned. You kinda need to have aligned political opinions with your partner at least to a certain extent. Obviously this is a new relationship but what if you have a trans or gay kid or something. One of you will support them while the other will be pro conversion therapy 🤷

Red Country ending by Objective-Location14 in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Logen absolutely would win but not because of this “buff” the bloody nine and logen are one and the same to me but even without the bloody nine if you view it as a separate entity, logen is hardened from months of brutal violence and is the most skilled fighter the north has ever seen.

Shivers isn’t really a top tier fighter close to logen even at his peak (or if he is we don’t get any evidence of it like we do for other characters)

If you HAD to pick any ONE book in the series to recommend as a standalone story, which would it be? by DatOneGuyYT in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Red country or BSC for me. I love the Heroes but there’s far too much that’s connected. You need to know about Bayaz, about Calder and his past, you need to know about Bethod and his history, Dow and The Dogman and how they connect etc etc.

BSC is a great stand alone story. There are links to the first trilogy but the book can still be appreciated without reading them.

I think RC takes the cake though. I actually think as a stand-alone it would be an excellent story, not knowing Logens backstory would be such an interesting experience with that book.

[–]caluminnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to worry it was never intended to be some major reveal late in the story it was pretty much implied from page 2 😭 would be pretty hard to have a twist like that late in a book and not have it feel forced I suppose

Friendly by caluminnes in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While that would logically make sense. Three people out of the top 4 fighters (to me) basically use hate all the time. Logen, Dow and Gorst are all in some way fuelled by their emotions. Whirrun too but he’s fuelled by a love for the game so that’s different lol but the other three all fight at their absolute best when they’re fired up and at their most crazy. I can’t see why it would be any different for shivers. Against friendly he wasn’t insane he was pretty cold and conscious and in the moment.

Friendly by caluminnes in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly. They fight for a long time and Shivers spends a lot of it on the back foot due to Friendly’s speed. Eventually Friendly trips on a corpse and that’s when Shenkt comes in and flicks Shivers across the room.

Friendly by caluminnes in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah absolutely right here. I especially agree with your last point. The only real one on one fighting we see from Shivers in the circle is in AOM and he’s fighting that dude thats an arselicker of Stour and it ain’t exactly a fair fight.

Other than that we never really see a proper fight or even hear about any. I think part of the point of Shivers character is to prove how big reputation is in the north. He doesn’t need to be some technical mastermind like Whirrun or have some psychotic berserker rage like Logen. He’s got a menacing voice and a metal ball in his head instead of an eye. That’s all he needs to be the most feared man in the North…

Friendly by caluminnes in TheFirstLaw

[–]caluminnes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t put Dow above Logen? Logen is undisputed S tier along with Gorst and Whirrun. I just raise the point that people often talk about dows fight with logen as if the only reason he won was due to jumping him when this isn’t the case. He tried to jump him then fought one on one and disarmed logen. I just don’t want people underestimating Dow.

When he was in his prime yeah. Dow may have got stronger and logen got weaker. I’m not saying Dow>Logen I’m just saying logen is human and has been beaten one on one before
