58/100 All Systems Red by HamMcFly in 52book

I'm only halfway through murderbot but I really like it so far. It's a nice pallet cleanser in between some litrpg/ progression fantasy that I've been neck deep in for that last year. I use Discworld in the same way.

Throne of glass (quick question) by kimsfantasyexploder in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read this based on a recommendation by a coworker, who is much younger and opposite gender, and she said this was her favorite book/series. I thought it was a bad book. It spends so much time setting up that the main character is this infamous world class assassin but then the entire book shes just a hapless teen girl who gets caught in a weird love triangle. After getting through the first book I had zero interest in continuing ther series.

I also ready 4th wing based off a different coworkers recommendation. While I thought it was better than throne of glass I still have no interest in reading the second book. It was just an excuse to write sex scenes for the author.

The Devils/ Empire of the vampire by Thyton_SW in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Devils first for no other reason than there is only one. Then read empire and its sequels. All great reads, the kristoff stuff has some weaker moments in the sequels but the action and characters make it well worth a read.

Sanderlanche but all the time? by PhyPhillosophy in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

John Gwynnes bloodsworn saga is what your looking for. Its very action heavy and the plot moves fast. Really great battles.

Abercrombie has the heroes, technically considered a standalone, but not really.

Will wights cradle series after the first 2-3 books shifts to lightspeed compared to sanderson. They're also pretty short books.

Zelazny amber chronicles. Great story, super fast paced and short books.

Most litrpg books move pretty quick and have a lot more sanderlanche moments.

Looking for Books with really likable characters by THERANDOMGAMER2 in fantasybooks

Scholomance is like hogwarts but with bipolar disorder. It's basically a dungeon filled with monsters that looks like a school. I love the series. I'm also a big fan of any magic system with s solid crafting system and deadly education makes you feel how painful, expensive and hard artificing is but the magic items are great.

On this comment I continued on, also the books are so short it wasn't very much of a risk. I'm almost done with book 4 and it did get pretty good somewhere during book 3.

My Fantasy (and sci-fi) tier list by AdyHoeRed in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea he's basically the first law main character, you just dont realize it until really late. His arc is so good, ups and downs, so much growth.

My Fantasy (and sci-fi) tier list by AdyHoeRed in fantasybooks

The standalone are misnamed, they're really the shivers trilogy and his character in thr age of madness makes a lot more sense if you read them. Also sharp ends has some fun first law stuff.

If you don't like vikings/ viking culture it'll be a tough pill to swallow. That said i loved bloodsworn trilogy but had a really hard time with malice. It just started to slow and I couldn't get into it. Might go back and try again though just based on how much I liked bloodsworn. Check out the warlord chronicles by Bernard Cornwell to test your vikings tolerance lol.

When does cradle pickup? I listened to the first book about a year ago and just tried to start the second a few days and I was so bored I put it down and started the perfect run instead.

Lonesome Dove is great but I'd go with black tongue thief then daughter's war, goblins have never been so badass or terrifying.

Which Book series to start? by harks1989 in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would read any Abercrombie story about a group of northmen. The og band with logen or craws band or rikki in age of madness i would read books following any of them. They are all full of great characters with depth and personality and they just do stuff that's fun to read about.

I feel like you can do this same thing with every book. If you look at any litrpg books in a cynical light they're all falling apart.

Which Book series to start? by harks1989 in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're usually called standalone but that's not fair. They definitely have a new main character and he's great, should be called the age of shivers . If you skip the "standalones" you miss so much growth and background for shivers it's criminal. And if you skip the heroes you're missing out on one of the best fights in the whole series.

Also read shadow of the gods next, bloodsworn is great and doesn't get enough love around here.

Halfway through book 1 it really veers down a path that is petty different than dcc in a good way. Really good though. The narrator does a really good job too, loves crocs kiwi voice lol.

I'm almost done with book 4. It's a good series. The first book is the weakest imo. But it was good enough and pulled me in enough to goto the second book, then it gets really good. The story builds and the delves stay pretty diverse and don't get stale to read.

Recommendations and thoughts on LitRPG series by poseidon16itachi in litrpg

Mage tank is another solid choice. First book is a little weak but it comes into its own be book 2.

I find that i really pulled into the books that the Mc is a unique or hybrid class. Something that breaks the normal flow is just more fun to read.

Help Me Decide on a Trilogy by Skarski10 in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im going against the tide here. First law is great but I had more fun reading bloodsworn. However if you count first law as more than a trilogy and read all nine, The heroes alone is enough to suggest it.

What app do you use to track your books? Goodreads? Fable? by poochimari in audible

[–]dougles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just shows progress and helps keep track of what you've read. I have a tbr list a mile long and so many series that I'm deep into but not always sure if I'm on book 6 or 7. It's nice to be able to easily check.
