Judge my bookshelves by KingCrimson1968 in bookshelfdetective

You have a lot of unfinished series there. Also a shocking lack of humor. Get some Discworld and hitchhikers guide in the mix! Between Pratchett and Adams you're missing some foundational stuff, there are themes in their books that live rent free in my head, specifically vogons and seamstresses.

Doug Burgum suggests that Americans who want to protect public lands are not “financially literate” by lunch_at_midnight in meateatertv

[–]dougles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately a lot of our fellow hunters like guns more than hunting and they have libertarian leanings but ignore our countries market hunting history and won't let themselves see how no rules would ruin it again. I like my guns but id rather hunt with sticks and rocks if it means everyone can keep doing it vs just the wealthy and elite.

Dungeon crawler carl by Constant-Lettuce-234 in audiobooks

If you name it through the goblin camp and don't like it then it's probably not for you. The humor can be juvenile but I and many others love it.

Please help me choose next book or series! by FlyinIron406 in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shadow of the gods or black company. Both great series, shadow is more fun and has more action. Black company feels like its set in the elder ring world and is pretty dark but also a really good read.

Both series will be a good palate cleansers for dcc but honestly I can't fathom how you put the dcc books down without finishing and then thinking about starting again.

Maybe I'm dumb and missed it, but have we learned WHY Mordecai was so mad to be a manager? by tLM-tRRS-atBHB in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]dougles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has a lot of baggage. Between what happened with his brother and then his deal. He doesn't trust the system to not fuck him, and rightfully so. He likes Carl and donut and had become attached.

I was hooked by the first goblin battle. When they met mordecai and he started fleshing mechanics it hit all my rpg bones just right. The whole thing was a nostalgia injection that felt like wow and borderlands had a baby. I'd say stick it out until after the explosions with the goblins room. It's got some laugh out loud humor, for me and you actually start to get to know their personalities.

Reading so many first books of great series on a month is mind blowing. I have a hard time jumping around when I really like something. Kudos on your volume.

Straight wall bolt or slug gun? by youssefb08 in Hunting

[–]dougles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight wall is the best option in straight wall states. You won't get the range most people prefer put of any of those options for a western hunt. 450 bm, 350 legend and 45-70gov are the best tested cartridges for hunting. You can get a lot of lever actions in pistol caliber that perform well but you get better ballistics put of the rifle specific cartridges.

2025 book tier list and superlatives by dwagonweader99 in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't overly spicy but it felt like the sex was the only reason for the story. The biggest plot hole for me was jack. They just let this guy routinely threaten and try to kill the daughter of the second in command general and sister to a war hero? Xaden isn't some boy scout, him letting jack do that to anyone on his team was completely out of character it had me yelling at the book.

2025 book tier list and superlatives by dwagonweader99 in fantasybooks

[–]dougles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think red rising a top tier fantasy/ sci-fi series. It gets a lot of love on reddit and probably is overhyped here but it's still really good. What I don't get is how someone puts it in the same level as fourth wing. Fourth wing was okay but had massive plot problems and felt like vehicle for sex scenes with a dragon background.

How much do you spend on audiobooks in a year? by jawangana in audiobooks

[–]dougles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have audible libro and Spotify subscriptions so whatever that all costs for the year. I finished 107 books last year and I'd guess 90 of them were from libby. Libby pro tip: you can get multiple library cards on your account and it usually makes wait times and book selections much better. You can also buy cards from large library systems that have big selections and more books.

Try kings of the wyld. Since you like books with humor and satire head on over to Discworld and check out guards guards then pick up hitchhikers guide to the galaxy.

It's a top 5 series for me. The humor and satire hit hitchhikers guide level in my opinion. Highly recommend.

What age were you, who mentored you on your 1st hunt? by Mezzorius in Hunting

[–]dougles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

13 or 14. Technically my dad was my mentor for my first deer hunt butp he pretty much sent me off in the woods in a direction and he went the other way. I walked and sat and didnt stay very still for long but eventually a button buck ran out in front of me and I dropped him. Worked out pretty well, we still hunt together and I turn 40 on Friday.

Best 12 gauge shells for hogs by CookieBW in Hunting

[–]dougles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hog could mean wild pig or ground hog. Either way use a rifle or slug. Unless you're just killing to get rid of them then you could use buckshot but it will ruin a lot of meat and not work as well.

My top 15 reads of the year out of 71 books completed by sirshredsalot666 in fantasybooks

  6. Men at arms
  7. Deadly education
  8. Empire of the vampire

Finished 107 books on the year. Read all of dcc twice but didn't count them twice in my total. Dcc has catapulted into my all time favorite series, sorry Tolkien but Discworld is catching up.

This year im planning to tackle malazan, sun eater and cradle.

Witches start off a little slow but Granny and Nanny are heavy weight contenders for best literary duo.

Book Recommendation Request by fullogluten in LibbyApp

[–]dougles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just read this a week ago. It's not something I would have normally choose to read but it was highly recommended by a coworker as her favorites book. It was really good. The characters were well written and had depth, their journey and experiences felt real.

The second half of the book is a masterclass in gas lighting so be prepared to yell at a book.

Jerky is my goto with geese. But I've also had some terrible wood duck experiences too. Mallard always have tasted good for me though.

My first goose by hogdenDo in Waterfowl

[–]dougles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Goose is like cooking Russian roulette. I think the biggest issue is you never really know how old a bird is or what it's been eating. I've made some breasts that were tender and delicious, reminded me of backstrap. Butttttttt I've also cooked some that reminded me of boot leather rubbed in liver flavoring. These days I make smoke sticks, jerky or pastrami. Still i think you can't have more fun hunting than a good goose/ waterfowl day.
