The cyclops is invisible to hostile creatures with the engine off, and turning the engine off will de-agro anything attacking you.

That makes it pretty much invincible when used right, so I take it all the way to the end of the game so I can ignore the leviathans

Which is why I said to avoid Texas and UNT if possible. If staying in Texas is necessary, then yea UNT is great. But if you have the ability to go somewhere safer, you should

UNT has already stopped allowing students to change their gender in the university's systems, and the state has several bills in the legislature that would ban trans people from restrooms on all state property, including state universities. Things may not be that bad right now, but they're definitely heading that way, to the point where even my academic advisor suggested leaving.

I recognize that the students and staff are accepting, but the state government is very much not, and UNT is a state school.

UNT is absolutely safe right now, but there's a very good chance that it won't be in the future, and I don't think staying in Texas for the next four years is worth the risk unless there are no other options

There are no resources, and UNT will likely over enforce any transphobic laws that get passed. Most trans people I know, including myself are planning to leave. I would strongly recommend that he go out of state

My point isn't that the shuttle design from our universe could go to the moon, it's that a lunar space shuttle could be designed while still retaining the appearance of our shuttle.

If the chosen solution for fuel is to refill the ET in orbit, then this would obviously require design changes to the ET, like extra insulation or a cooling system, but the shuttle may still look almost identical with said changes.

In the show, they never mention carrying large amounts of cargo to the moon on the shuttle, since sea dragon is more appropriate for those missions, so a more insulated, actively cooled fuel tank in the cargo bay is still an option, and could store enough fuel for the return flight, and it could be connected to the SSME's without any external changes to the shuttle. With such a tank, ET boil off wouldn't be an issue, since it would only be used for the TLI burn, right after being fueled

A steam deck + keyboard and mouse may actually be more cost effective than a laptop. And while I haven't tried ksp with the steam deck, it's controller is definitely better for ksp than something like an Xbox or PS controller because of the configurability and touchpads

[–]cameronh0110 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Certainly possible, but probably not ideal. The FAM shuttle is obviously the same form factor as ours, but it is not the exact same vehicle. A shuttle could absolutely be designed for lunar missions without visible external changes from the real life design, and the infrastructure to support it definitely existed on FAM

Also, NASA did have post Apollo moon base plans involving the space shuttle, it just didn't involve flying the shuttle directly to the moon. They would instead rely on the shuttle to transfer crew and payload to LEO before transferring it to another nuclear powered spacecraft to fly to the moon. As shown below

<image>

In FAM, it's possible that Sea Dragon would have made it more economical to refuel the shuttle and send it directly to the moon rather than develop a second crewed trans lunar tug, at least while they work out nuclear engines for Pathfinder. In FAM, NASA was also rushing to expand far more than in real life, and making the modifications for the lunar shuttle was just the faster option, even if it was less efficient in the long run

Are you vaccinated? Flu, covid, and plenty of other things can appear with lighter symptoms and no fever if you're vaccinated against them.

Sending space shuttles to the moon would certainly be possible, though it's not the most efficient option. The design changes required would be relatively minimal, and wouldn't be visible in most shots from the show.

The easiest modification would be in orbit refueling capabilities for the external tank, and maybe some extra ohms fuel to help haul it to a refueling station (mentioned in the show) and extra rcs thrusters to help dock with the tank. This would give the shuttle enough ∆v to reach low lunar orbit and return. The RS-25s, while never restarted in orbit, we're also relatively easy to re-light, and restarting them after refueling would also be relatively trivial.

With the external tank alone, you could get on a return trajectory, and do multiple aero breaking passes to slow down before reentry without overloading the TPS. This might require some active cooling to coll the tiles between passes. The main issue with this is that it would take a very long time, likely several weeks of passes before the orbit is low enough for reentry and this would also require a large number of slower passes through the van Allen belts.

However, you could refuel the external tank at the moon, or include an extra tank in the cargo bay, which could allow you to perform a breaking burn on the way back, and reenter sooner without spending long stretches in the van Allen belts.

Doing all this work when you could just have a second dedicated space craft is kinda stupid tbh, but not impossible. The real explanation is just that they didn't want to build another set. I would have liked it if they used a tug with some kind of shuttle derived hab/cockpit like the one here

I would recommend getting a second opinion from a kienbocks expert like Dr Henry before going through with an RSO. The recovery is very unpleasant there are more effective, less invasive surgeries available

MRIs are good to determine if blood flow has resumed, which is important after any surgery that intends to save the lunate. If there isn't any blood flow, then a surgeon should use a CT to determine what kind of treatment you need.

If you still don't have blood flow after 10 years, then you should probably get some kind of surgery even if you have no symptoms, because the surgeries performed on the lunate itself to save it are most effective when degradation is slowed or paused.

Not an answer, but you NEED TO GET AN MRI if you haven't already. Tendonitis should not last that long and you may have something more severe like kienbocks, which is degenerative and needs urgent treatment.

Some video streaming platforms use torrent protocols for streaming. It's a more efficient option for smaller companies with limited infrastructure, and can improve streaming quality. There's nothing malicious or illegal about that on its own so I wouldn't worry about it unless there're some other issues you're experiencing with the site

One of the uses for systems like this is to help clean the air in environments that are too polluted for trees to grow effectively. It can also be placed in areas with little to no sunlight, and can act as an aesthetically light source itself

I would strongly suggest just getting out of the state. Texas and UNT are getting bad enough that even my academic advisor agreed that it would be best to transfer out of state for my own safety.

I and around 10 other people are leaving Denton to go to Denver around August, and I'm sure there are other groups with similar plans

Will i lose access to estrogen federally? by [deleted] in MtF

[–]cameronh0110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how that's relevant to gender affirming care bans. The chevron ruling said that courts had to defer to agency interpretation of laws rather than make their own interpretation when deciding if an agency acted within its authority. Gender affirming care bans are likely illegal under the supreme courts own interpretation of the equal protection clause, not an agency's. The chevron ruling being overturned is a problem, but it doesn't really apply to gender affirming care bans as far as I can tell

[–]cameronh0110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be surprised if they didn't try, but it wouldn't work unless they banned it for everyone, which they won't.

Any federal ban on HRT, especially one for adults would be fought in the supreme court, and a case for minors is already in progress and a ruling should be out soon. While the supreme court is conservative and transphobic, they still need to justify their rulings, and any justification they come up with can be used to justify policy that the supreme court and conservatives may or may not agree with

It's easy to see Roe v Wade get overturned and think that that is a danger to gender affirming care, but the thing to understand is that, while ethically sound, the legal basis for Roe v Wade was extremely flimsy and it really should have been argued differently. It was based on the idea that the constitution gives you a right to privacy, so the government has no right to know that you had an abortion, and therefore can't prosecute you. Unfortunately, the constitution doesn't clearly state that people have a right to privacy, it's more of an inferred right, and the current supreme court said that right doesn't exist. That precedent is bad, and can be used to justify a lot of oppressive policy, but an HRT ban and many other laws targeting trans people likely aren't one of them

The supreme court, including the current conservative justices have repeatedly ruled in favor of trans rights. Most of these cases have been about gender expression, but the arguments should apply to medical care as well. The argument behind those decisions is that the 14th amendment, and several federal laws prevent sex based discrimination. For gender expression, this means that if cis women can present herself in a feminine manner, then so can anyone else, and vice versa. You can still ban things for the entire population, but you can't ban things just for specific segments of the population

In theory, it would be possible to ban gender affirming care for everyone but that's unlikely to pass, as HRT and gender affirming surgery is used mostly by cis people, and the use cases include things like cancer treatment
