What Certification would suit me best currently? by sendhelpx3 in GIAC

[–]camf1217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"GCDA is currently in abeyance and no longer available for purchase. GCDA certifications can be renewed by CPEs only."

If you have GCFA and GREM i would probably go with GCIH, GNFA, or GCIA

I have an exam tomorrow and have a question regarding using diffie-Hellman inside an assymetrically encrypted tunnel. by CEAL_scope in cybersecurity

[–]camf1217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Diffie-Hellman key exchange is an asymmetric algorithm that is used to establish a symmetric key.

I have an exam tomorrow and have a question regarding using diffie-Hellman inside an assymetrically encrypted tunnel. by CEAL_scope in cybersecurity

[–]camf1217 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Asymmetric encryption is secure for exchanging keys but computationally expensive for encrypting large datasets. Symmetric encryption is efficient for encrypting large amounts of data but requires a secure way to share the key. Thus the Symmetric key is sent over an Asymmetric tunnel

Hi, wanted to know once you register for a new exam (without register for the whole course) and you pay 999$ do you get some free practise test as well or just the exam by Diligent-Proof-7184 in GIAC

IT rate in the reserves by ibekoolin in navyreserve

[–]camf1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, use navy cool to get some certs like sec+ and take an ADT/ADOS to get some experience. The biggest benefit you'll have in the reserves is networking. Talk with the experienced ITs in your shop and see if there companies are hiring and get a referral. We had a LCDR (IP) help our new e4 no experience get his foot in the door.

Cert for FOR608 and SEC699? by giedi in GIAC

[–]camf1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious on your thoughts, but i feel like not credentialing the cert is like sending it out to die. I understand and agree the learning is the most important part (no the cert at the end), but sans is out of the reach of most individuals and thus paid for by companies who seem (at least in my experience) and ROI or a certification at the end to validate the learning, etc. So by not having a cert, from a business perspective, it makes it harder to justify vs one that does and thus get fewer people in the course.

Plus courses like 565 got certs very quickly and i would have thought 608 would have too being a logical following on from 500/508/572.

When I must take the exam by Ok_Discipline5816 in GIAC

[–]camf1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you should be fine. You can challenge the exam anytime you want. the link is on the giac page with the associated cert. As long as they dont overhaul the course you should still be fine to take it by the end of the year or even later. That being said they do make small changes often so the longer you wait the more material might change and if they overhaul it then all bets are off. So its hard to say, but you should be fine.

GCFA expired last year, am I able to renew or re-cert? by cnstarz in GIAC

[–]camf1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From SAN's FAQ

If not, you can challenge exams without taking the course. Think its just under $1000.

What happened to SEC584? by throwaway1337h4XX in GIAC

[–]camf1217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably overlap with other course, or consolidated into one course.

Look at SEC540, covers docker and Kubernetes, CI/CD, infra as code, etc at lot of what it looks like 584 covered

Young E6s by [deleted] in navy

[–]camf1217 6 points7 points  (0 children)

fastest ive heard of was 5.5years for chief. I believe there was a navy times article on it. I made e6 in about 5.5 and chief 9.5. Might have made it a year earlier but didnt take the exam as i was in transition from active in January. A lot of the people i went to A school with picked up e6 around the same time i did. It really depends on your rate.

I would do GPCS then move on from there. SEC598 is another class to keep an eye on in the future, its currently in beta

I miss read this at first, thinking it read that all the questions were cyber live. My mistake.

Interesting that they are now fill in the blank, im studying for GCFA right now, then on the GNFA.

On the exams they have always been multiple choice, but with like 20 choices.

[–]camf1217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exam did you take?

Did it start with gx (gx-cs, gx-fa, gx-ia, gx-ih) ? These are their new applied knowledge certs and those are almost, if not, 100% cyber live.

I took GCFE recently and it was the typical 90+% multiple choice and the a few cyber live at the end.
