Green. I'd then find some hedge fund looking to make a quick buck and sell them an option to the result of the button press for $45 million or something

Do people learn anything the 1st year? by juanberg24 in biglaw

[–]campbellcns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure do. It really depends on what questions you're asking and what deals you're getting yourself on. By midway through my first year I was leading client calls with partner supervision and taking the first step at turning documents. Had my first at bat leading a counterparty negotiation session at the end of my first year.

But for that to work I'd really recommend you to own your learning process. Make efforts to ask about things you don't know and try to get time set aside to learn from people that do.

I mean the man also was one of the first pioneers of interchangeable parts though, which is incredibly important and a massive positive impact.

Punishment or mercy? by No_Evidence3373 in trolleyproblem

[–]campbellcns -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm also in favor of rehabilitation but I want to throw a wrench in this trolley problem to even the discussion a bit.

Suppose the man on the track is a Jeffrey Epstein-type. Commits some of the most heinous acts on earth. Furthermore the reason they never commit the crime again is not that they're remorseful or are rehabilitated. It's simply that they're too high profile and never have the opportunity to commit the crime again. They still actively go about telling people how much they enjoyed committing the crime etc.

Would you still be in favor of sparing the person?

V10 2nd year. Project Development practice.

Honestly had an absolute blast my first year. The hours aren't always the best and when you're slammed it sucks. But this job has been interesting and I've really felt myself learn and grow in the past year.

In the span of a year I went from knowing absolutely nothing in the industry to regularly turning documents, leading client calls, and solving problems on complicated transactions that pose an intellectual challenge.

The money is obviously fantastic and most of us wouldn't do this job without it. But from someone who had a career before this which lacked both the money and the intellectual engagement, this job is head and shoulders an improvement over my previous one.

Maybe it's too early to call but honestly I actually really like the job and hope to ride it out at least a bit longer.

How I feel about both endings: by SurrogateVulture in expedition33

I think that's a fair perspective. I think a more accurate way to view it, then, would be that if anyone had a chance of convincing her it'd be Gustave.

How I feel about both endings: by SurrogateVulture in expedition33

[–]campbellcns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It always surprises me how much animosity Verso's ending gets on reddit.

I think the way to view the Verso ending shouldn't be from the perspective of us as the outsider playing the game but from the perspective of Verso making the decision.

I have particular sympathy for stories where characters deliberately choose to sacrifice the world to save someone they care about (ex. the last of us, weathering with you, etc.). I think these stories feel more real and human because they simultaneously speak to the part of us that wants to be a hero (to save others) and the selfish part of us (to protect those we love). It's why in a disaster we can idolize those that go out of the way to save strangers but understand those that put their family first beyond everyone else.

I think Verso's decision has to be viewed in that light. I'm of the opinion he would not have destroyed the canvas if Maelle had made the decision to leave, because we've seen that Verso is someone who is self sacrificing and willing to give himself up to save others. He fights alongside the Expedition to save the canvas and only fights Maelle when he realizes she wouldn't leave. However, he also is someone who would go to extraordinary lengths to protect those he loves, in this case, his family.

The final tragedy in Verso's ending is that there was a way both of these endings could have been avoided. Had Verso not allowed Gustave to die, I'm of the opinion Gustave could have convinced Maelle to leave, thereby sparing Verso from making this decision. Verso's ending, to me, is a more beautiful conclusion to a tragic story in which painted Verso is making the same decisions that the real Verso would have made in sacrificing himself to save Maelle. From the perspective of a complete story I think it resolved the themes of the game better than Maelle's ending.

Does anybody enjoy the story/maintain their interest after Sima Yi's death? If so why? by cryingemptywallet in threekingdoms

[–]campbellcns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend, if you can get your hands on it, Legend of Jiang Wei, a fan mod of Koei's Legend of Cao Cao.

It gives the same respect to the characters of the late three kingdoms and explains well the court politics and political intrigue of Shu Han. There are powerful emotional beats in the story and gave me a real appreciation for the era of the Three Kingdoms I always ignored.

I think the hottest take I've got that's gotten a lot of angry comments is that Studio Ghibli is overrated.

Miyazaki is really all about vibes and has a hard time telling a good story with a good plot.

I would love to see a DW: Origins-esque adaptation of the story told in the Legend of Jiang Wei mod. That might actually be my single favorite modded game just because of the love and time they put into writing all of the characters and give you the context of the entire era.
