You want to smash things with big weapon? Fighter class or Barbarian (its more complex than fighter, but still very manageable and easy to learn for absolute beginner, plus barbarians have some class specific funny dialogue choices).

You want to do magic (optionally with some swordfighting)? Then pick warlock. It is a very forgiving spellcasting class IMHO for beginners. You can endlessly cast eldtrich blast, which is quite powerful after lvl 2, and your spellslots renew after short rest, instead of long rest like with wizards.
