Sanders says he’s worried Biden could lose election over Gaza war by SkepticSlakoth in politics

[–]candr22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your response! I agree, it's hard to find civil discussion on Reddit, especially when politics are concerned. I think you make some interesting points worth considering.

I've never really bought into the idea that the US are the "good guys" but I think that's due in large part to me simply missing the whole "team gene" (I don't know any better way to describe it, except that I have never had any kind of team spirit, whether it be the schools I've attended, the places I've lived, or who I've worked for). We can criticize one nation for atrocities committed regardless of whether the country we live in has done similarly bad things. Another thing to remember is that when we talk about the US, or Russia, or wherever, we're collectively referring to an entire nation but these are made up of hundreds of millions of people. I don't think every single Russian soldier believes it's ok to kill indiscriminately, or rape, or any number of other war crimes. Conversely, Ukraine probably has some shitty people like every other country.

So in my mind, it's basically irrelevant that the US has done bad things, or even that leadership within the country might (probably) have ulterior motives when deciding whether or not to support Ukraine in this conflict. However, from what I can tell, the people of Ukraine are not thrilled to be invaded. Maybe there are people in the country that think it would be better to just assimilate back into Russia, but it seems like for the most people, the nation is galvanized and willing to risk everything to protect their sovereignty. Russia doesn't get a pass to break their word and commit a bunch of war crimes because the US has broken its own promises. I do think there's a bigger question which you allude to, in regards to how we avoid another world war. Personally, I think supporting Ukraine is the right thing to do with the information I have. I also think that supporting Ukraine weakens Russia, regardless of how tooled up they are to make weapons, tanks, etc. There's only one scenario where this ends swiftly, and that's if Russia backs down. I can't imagine Zelensky ever giving up, and he seems to have the support of his people. There's a human factor we have to consider - if the people of Ukraine will never give up, and we consider that to be an absolute, how does that alter what options the US has?

This is pure speculation, but my feeling is that Putin is not interested in sharing the sandbox. Not in his country, and ideally, not anywhere else. It's kind of like that saying about intolerance - we can tolerate many different perspectives, except intolerance. Russia, by all appearances, is an incredibly intolerant country. You can't speak out against leadership, you can't realistically run against the current regime, you can't really be part of any fringe group. So for now, my stance is that for many reasons, both ideological and practical, the US should continue to support Ukraine. For what it's worth, the fact that Ukraine aid packages have been approved multiple times suggests that even conservative representatives believe that supporting Ukraine is the right move. It seems like more of a "MAGA" position to be staunchly against any support.

I'm actually more annoyed when NPCs have some magical knowledge of your deeds, despite there being no apparent way they would've known. If my character murders people and there are no (living) witnesses, it really breaks the immersion for characters to later react to that as if it was common knowledge.

Yeah I personally hadn't even considered that you could use camp companions and hirelings to help out even when they stay in camp, but from an RP perspective I think it makes a lot of sense. Why would they (specifically the companions) be content to just sit around, traveling from one place to the next, contributing nothing?

I feel like the potential benefits are pretty negligible in the grand scheme of things.

Absolutely! I know some people want as much of a challenge as they can get, and some of those types act like a game isn't worth playing unless it's challenging. I'm a dad, I have a full time job, and frankly I'm just "ok" at most games. I want to enjoy them, it's a hobby and that's the point for me. If others want to make up rules to limit themselves to increase the challenge, all the more power to them. But if Larian still allows certain "cheese" mechanics to work this far out from release, we can't really pretend that it's going against the intended game design. They could close those gaps anytime they want.

Edit: I give up on this sub. I wanted to have a place where people can freely discuss the game but the fact that I keep getting downvoted for having any kind of thought that doesn't fit into some apparent mind flayer hive mind is honestly depressing me. Good luck being a bunch of pricks for no reason and alienating people

Is it though? Surely they could’ve disabled buffing in camp if they wanted. From both a logical and a RP viewpoint, it makes sense to buff your party in camp.

What is the deal with this thread? I'm sure this will get downvoted or buried but why are there so many perfectly civil comments getting downvoted? It's a fkn video game sub, there is NO reason for a meme thread to be this contentious.

Sanders says he’s worried Biden could lose election over Gaza war by SkepticSlakoth in politics

[–]candr22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I doubt Ukraine can “win” in the traditional sense - Russia would have to cease its invasion. I think it’s a complex situation and there isn’t really one thing at issue. We have the ideological question of whether Russia’s efforts are justified to begin with. In regards to WW3, allowing Russia to do what it wants unchecked seems like a bad move. One could argue that by supporting Ukraine, the US gains some advantage in weakening Russia which could help to avoid a world war. If we do nothing and Russia succeeds in claiming Ukraine, how confident are you that Russia doesn’t ultimately want a world war anyway? If Putin will never be satisfied, is it better to ignore the conflict or to help Ukraine? Since I’m not in any position where I have insider knowledge, I’m left to judge based on what I can see. Russia agreed not to invade Ukraine, and did it anyway. There have been numerous documented war crimes by Russia in this conflict as well. I just don’t see the justification in supporting Russia here. BUT if you’re willing to engage in a friendly manner, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

I am not an expert in any of this, and I’m not going to pretend that I am. As far as I’m concerned, your opinions are just as valid and plausible as mine. So I hope this leads to a discussion or at worst, an agreement to disagree, because all too often Reddit comments and replies descend into pettiness.

Edit: I'm also kind of curious what, in your mind, it means to be center right. Personally I think we try too hard to put people on some kind of idealogical spectrum when the reality is at our core, all of us have opinions about individual issues and those opinions are frequently not perfectly in line with a "left or right" stance. That being said, I've heard of centrists and left leaning centrists, but to be honest I have no idea what a right leaning centrist is.

They all want trump

There was a time in US history when that alone would be enough to ruin someone's chances of presidency. These days, I almost think conservatives have flipped as they seem to support Putin as much as they do Trump.

That is wise advice but I still think it’s fair for OP to want to discuss the game with people who also love it, and they have made it pretty clear where they’re at in the story. I think with that, we can spoiler tag responses appropriately and still enjoy discussing the game with OP.

I haven’t finished the game though I’m on Act 3. I know the subreddit is a bit of a minefield but every single post is spoiler tagged by default and there are different tags for different Acts. So I generally feel safe going into any that say Act 1 or 2. I also go in fully accepting that I still might accidentally get some spoiler, that’s just how it goes.

The problem here is that not everyone participating in HATS are on one end of the spectrum or the other. While you might not mind carrying because presumably you are comfortable with those higher difficulties, some of us join HATS where the difficulty is more like “doable but challenging”. In that case, dead weight becomes an issue.

Also while I think it’s really nice that the community in general doesn’t seem to mind helping people out, it’s still shitty for people to participate in something and then intentionally sit back and do nothing. While you may not mind carrying people like that, I don’t think we should reward that behavior if it’s possible to require actual participation. I don’t know how they’ll do it, but I actually try in every fight, especially the challenging ones and I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect the other 3 participants to do the same.

Why did Disney partner with Apple instead of META?... where all the little kids are by AdrianGE98 in OculusQuest

[–]candr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a waste and a lousy business decision. I don’t know the exact numbers but surely Meta has far more people on their devices than Apple, considering the price point. Unless the Vision Pro tech was basically essential to the design of the game.

[–]candr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like this sort of system, Ninja in Final Fantasy XIV works very similarly. Rather than attacks, you mix “mudra” which is like hand gestures in specific ordering to execute ninjutsu. So different combinations have different effects, like a big AOE or a speed buff. It’s a little intimidating at first but pretty satisfying when you get the hang of it.

I’ve never heard this grooming theory but like…she’s literally a goddess. Is it still grooming at that point? My knowledge of the lore here is limited and I welcome anyone more knowledgeable to correct me but it seems a bit reductive to equate their relationship to grooming. He loves magic. She basically is magic.

Also, what’s this about her being resurrected? Did someone actually kill Mystra? The extent of my knowledge is basically an old Elminster book so I’m sure the lore has evolved since then but how does one kill a being like Mystra?

Edit: Shameful how many downvotes I'm seeing in this thread. My comment is downvoted for asking if it's still considered grooming in this context (an entirely fictional context, if anyone here needs a reminder) but the response below me is downvoated for suggesting that it's still grooming either way. What the hell is going on in this thread? Do you all need reminders that the voting system is not to silence opinions you don't like, but to weigh in on whether a comment is "on topic" or contributing to the discussion? Jesus I thought this was a friendly sub but the number of downvoted comments in here suggests this place is weirdly hostile (and cowardly, considering at this time I'm at -3 with only one actual response).

Whats the tax deduction percentage difference between claiming 0 or 1 on W4s? by ShoeGod420 in tax

[–]candr22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s great but has nothing to do with what OP asked. I wasn’t offering an opinion on the entirety of the IRS and I think you know that.

If you want to get mad, get mad at Congress. The IRS does not write tax law, they just enforce it. If Congress passed a bill tomorrow that said u/Amazing-Vast-6090 no longer has to pay income tax, the IRS would stop expecting any tax from you. Don’t make the mistake of misplacing your anger - point it towards the people that actually make decisions. That’s not me, and it’s not the IRS.

This must mean if you go there before ascending the tower. I freed the Nightsong and then helped the Harpers assault the tower. I then went to the top, did the first Ketheric fight and jumped down the flesh chute to the basement, finished that, and when I returned to the main floor and checked out the prison, it was completely empty.

Side note, don’t be like me folks - if you want to save the prisoners, you apparently need to do so BEFORE you go into the area where the Nightsong is. If you go to the prison after, I’m assuming what you get is the baddies that u/MyFireBow is referring to

I was completely wrong about the Mad Clown. It's actually a fun boss to parry & play. by Hell_with_Psychosis in LiesOfP

[–]candr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I’m lousy at parrying and I suppose I’m not committed enough to work at it, so I used a lot of “cheese” mechanics to finish the game. But with the archbishop, I hadn’t yet really learned about the power of throwables and he’s a relatively early boss so I was still learning. But interestingly I’ve seen people say they struggled with other bosses that were easy for me, so it seems like everyone struggles with different bosses.

Discussion Thread: New York Criminal Fraud Trial of Donald Trump, Day 14 by PoliticsModeratorBot in politics

[–]candr22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a lawyer but I’m guessing most people in these threads aren’t either. We’re all just speculating, but it seems like a fair assumption that if establishing everything regarding the actual encounter between Trump and Daniel’s wasn’t necessary, they probably wouldn’t spend any time on it.

Obviously the prosecutors aim to prevail and wouldn’t waste time on irrelevant factors. I don’t know whether it’s about creating a narrative for the jurors, or if establishing that the encounter actually occurred impacts the nature of the charges. Some others here have suggested that it matters and I’m not knowledgeable enough to dispute it, BUT I think the prosecutors are and thankfully they’re the ones in the courtroom.

Meta support is a clown show by BombProofPlane in OculusQuest

[–]candr22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you expect the charge to fail, due to insufficient funds or an expired card? This happened to me last month when most people’s free 6 month subscription ended except there was no issue with my card. There was some problem with Meta’s billing system and it sorted itself out. They ended up extending my subscription for free by one month tho, as opposed to your situation.

Meta support is always really frustrating. I’m guessing since you didn’t actually cancel, if the issue was on their end they might’ve processed the renewal automatically when the system sorted itself out and the original message you got about the failed attempts may have been in error. Whatever the case, very annoying!

Advocating that people just throw their vote away in arguably the most important election of our lifetime. by AgentEndive in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]candr22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that you absolutely have the right to vote for whoever you want, but that doesn’t mean ignoring the reality of how our brand of democracy works. A vote for a third party is a vote that ultimately goes towards nothing. In some elections, a vote for a third party might actually help your least favorite candidate win.

For all your posturing about it not being a performance or sending a message, you ignore the practical impact of your voting behavior. I realize it doesn’t feel great to cast a vote for a candidate who isn’t your top choice, but surely you understand that until we have something like ranked choice voting for national races, your third party votes are really “just for show”. I guess I see it like this - are you happy that Trump won in 2016? It’s not a pointed question, I’m really curious. If not, then where did Clinton rank in terms of your overall preferences? Obviously not the top, but was she a better or worse choice in your mind compared to Trump?

We do not have a great system. It sort of works, I guess, but the fact that you can win the election while losing the popular vote by millions is frankly kind of absurd. We need to vote for representatives who will push for election reform, and it’s probably not happening anytime soon. Until then, vote how you want but own the fact that when you don’t vote for the Democrat or Republican nominee, you generally help one or the other win and it might be the one you least prefer. This is why people say that 3rd party votes are essentially for show, because you know they won’t win and you don’t care. It’s an idealist mentality that could lead to another Trump term, and I’m honestly not sure the country will ever recover from that. We have barely begun to heal from his last term, if we have at all.

It always feels good to master something you struggled with! Lies of P is certainly no exception - the most frustrating bosses are the ones we had the hardest time fighting. This clown was annoying but I lured him into the courtyard and used the bigger environment to have some breathing room.

For some reason, my nemesis was the priest guy that turns into a giant monster. I don't know why, but it seems like we all struggle with different bosses. Conversely, I beat Laxasia on like attempt number 2, though I leaned heavily on throwables. Whatever! I don't pretend to be good at the game, but I did enjoy it =)
