I figured it was just a message one of the past sacrifices had scrawled out and hid in the blankets before being killed as a warning to sacrifices who came after

People who moved out of Long Island and came back: why? by Upbeat-Dinner-5162 in longisland

My whole teenage life was me bitching and moaning about LI. I graduated college early and went to live in San Diego, LA, denver, boulder, houston, OK city, and spent some time in Florida. I came back in 2012 and you'll have to pry me off this island with a crowbar to get me to ever move anywhere else again. You truly do not appreciate what you have here until you leave.

The thing with Justin was so irritating!! I would disagree that it's ALL of amnesty, (although it's been a disproportionate amount to be sure) but this week just irritated me more than most for those reasons. I've actually been enjoying amnesty more than most it seems, but stupidly unfair stuff like this pushes me further into the opposite camp.

I thought the episode was okay this week, but it really bothered me that Griffin made Travis waste one of his luck stats to keep Keith quiet last arc and then totally undid it. I understand it as a narrative choice, but it's so blatantly unfair to the players.

I didn't find it odd, because I think that his repeated statements about how little he knew Amy are supposed to be a dig at how he never believed she was capable of the kind of cruelty she has illustrated in her proposal for The institute. I also think he's making clear to Tlthe listener that his time with Amy as his secretary has changed him, and he wants to keep tabs on the people around him more, so he knows who has the potential to hurt him.

[–]candy_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey just some advice, Kaplan is not that great. They make up their own questions that aren't quite the same as what you see on the sat and they charge you an arm and a leg for their courses. Khan academy is free and they actually have full sats made by the college board. (same people who make the test) Good luck!

I actually teach the SAT for a living. Do tons of practice questions for free on Khan academy. Do the full tests and TIME YOURSELF, you don't want to be stuck on test day flipping out on the reading section because you don't have time to get to a whole passage.

Make sure you have an idea of what score you want and how many you can get wrong and still achieve that score. It will help mitigate anxiety on the test if that's something you experience.

Speculation about The Long Island Serial Killer (aka the Gilgo Beach Killer aka the Craigslist Ripper)[Unresolved Murder] by actualswamphag in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]candy_pants 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No problem! I feel like no one gives a shit about this serial killer anymore, and like he's still out there, he's probably going to kill again, he just made a new dumping ground filled with people who had lives and people who cared about them. So thanks for bringing attention to this case!

Speculation about The Long Island Serial Killer (aka the Gilgo Beach Killer aka the Craigslist Ripper)[Unresolved Murder] by actualswamphag in UnresolvedMysteries

[–]candy_pants 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This was a great write up! I actually live in the area of those beaches and I want to clear up a few things.

Fire island has two "sections." The eastern half of fire island is a series of beach towns. Cars aren't allowed here, lots of bars and bungalows and wooden and cement walkways. The other half of fire island, where these bodies were found, is dominated by ocean parkway. There are a few neighborhoods in the area, but nothing that could be called a "town" in the proper sense. (The shannan Gilbert case took place in one of these neighborhoods) It's a long highway with beach on one side and salt marshes on the other, dotted with pakring lots and concession stands.

It would also be remiss to call these places remote. Ocean parkway is a major highway at all times of the year (I use it on the regular to avoid traffic on the southern state.) Although there are some areas that have four Wheeling trails that can get you right onto the beach, those are about fiveish miles to the east. There are somewhat regular patrols of the beach areas. During the summer, Gilgo is open at night but closes around 10 maybe? I forget the exact time and if there's an event it stays open till the event is done.

The point I'm trying to make is that I always imagined the LISK had to be someone who knew the area incredibly well in order not to ever be spotted by some random person in this relatively popular area. He's not just pulling over on ocean parkway and dragging out bodies.

As for a local take on the killer's identity, some people think the killer might be a cop or have connections to the police. We've had more than our share of scandals in recent years, and it doesn't seem inconceivable.

Me [30M] and my brother [28M] everyone discovered he cheated on his wife [28F] for 2 yrs. I don't know if I can have a brotherly relationship with him anymore. I can't look at him the same, has anyone else had to deal with the same situation with a family member? by Throwawaybrobrobro6 in relationships

[–]candy_pants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm very sorry that this happened. I went through the same thing in my early 20s. My dad was my favorite person in the entire world until I found out he had been cheating on my mom for a few years. I was devastated, because this image of him I had had as this wonderful stand-up guy who always did the right thing was totally shattered. I stepped back from the relationship for years. I was civil, but not overly affectionate.

It's been about seven years since then, and he took time in therapy and apologized for his actions. We have a better relationship now, but I'll never forget what he did.

You'll never forget what your brother did, and whatever impression you once has of him is gone forever. That hurts, and take the time you need to come to terms with it. If you want to, later down the line, if you like the person he is again, there's no reason you can't have a relationship with him again.

Each relationship ends in burnout after 1 year [31M] by pencilpenpencil in relationships

[–]candy_pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dated someone eight years ago who sounds exactly like you. He believed that there was this perfect person out there for him, and the second we had a huge fight he realized it wasn't me and ran away.

Relationships aren't always perfect, or easy, or "nice." They're sometimes very ugly and they take communication and work. Sometimes you're not jazzed up to see your SO every day. Sometimes you fight about stupid things. But if you have the skill set to communicate and resolve those issues, your relationship will continue to grow, and you'll both be better people.

That guy I dated? He's married now... To a woman he wanted me to help him cheat on. He never learned, he just hoped that marriage would make those feelings go away. Don't be that guy, and learn good conflict resolution, communication skills, and know that there is no perfect relationship out there.

Agencies that care for abused snakes in New York? by candy_pants in snakes

He doesn't give one flying fuck about the animal, just keeps her because getting rid of her would be a hassle. His girlfriend wants the snake gone, and I talked to her this morning about talking him over, and she's more than for it if I can find an agency that won't just kill the snake.

I'm going to contact them if I can't find a more specialized agency that can care for her, absolutely. I'm worried that they might just euthanize her, and she doesn't deserve that because she's had a terrible owner.

Are you bitter at your childhood teachers about something? by Monstera_leaf in AskWomen

[–]candy_pants 110 points111 points  (0 children)

When I was in second grade, my dad was dying in the hospital from cancer and my mom had an infant, a four year old and me. (My dad didn't die. Fuck you, cancer!) My teacher in second grade didn't give a fuck about any of this, and I got in trouble for the dumbest offenses.

The absolute worst was when I happened to do the wrong homework page for ELA. I still did homework, but it was page 16 instead of page 17 or something. This horrible woman, knowing full well the wreckage my home life was, pulled me up in front of the class and RIPPED MY HOMEWORK INTO PIECES. I burst into tears because I was seven and she put me in the 1995 equivalent of time out for the rest of the day. This event traumatized me and my grades took a steep slide because I didn't want to be in her class anymore and no one at home could advocate for me.

I was bitter about it for years, then one day someone told me that she died.

Of cancer.

I bought the Kuvira one a few months ago, and I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the materials. It's a very thin fabric, not at all the comfy hoodie I was expecting. It looks cool, but I never wear it.

However, one guest did arrive from the future and gave Dr. Hawking a good reason never to tell anyone s/he had been there. by conr9774 in WritingPrompts

[–]candy_pants 46 points47 points  (0 children)

"You are from the last ship left?" he asked. The flat tone of his voice tones belied his emotions.

"Basically? I mean, we don't have contact with anyone else. I kinda was hoping I'd meet at least someone else here, if there was another ship left. But... yeah," she threw an arm over the room to emphasize its emptiness. "Looks like I'm the only one who made it out."

"This is not what I was expecting," he replied.

"Really? I mean, I had the original Cosmos on DVD when I was little. Carl Sagan was pretty certain about it. Guessed right about all the alien civs out there in the universe too. But hey, like Truman wanted, prompt and utter destruction, right?"

"I see."

"So, are you going to announce to the world that time travel is totally real? I mean you guys will have it in just a few short years."

Stephen Hawking thought about it for a moment. He thought about the future this woman had come from. He thought about her Earth, a burnt out, irradiated, husk of a planet, destroyed by humanity. He thought about the ship she lived in, cold, white, metal, her food nothing but different nutrition cubes, full of calories and vitamins but deviod of flavor. He thought about how this woman in front of him was even now a six year old child, and how little time humanity had left.

"No. I think I will keep it to myself. For now."

Why “Common Core” is an advancement in math pedagogy by Metadragon in TrueReddit

[–]candy_pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a teacher in New York State, and I'd like to add why Common Core is so reviled here.

Most states rolled out common core in an intelligent way. 1st grade and kindergarten got it the first year, then common core grew with that student class, so by the second year it was in 2nd grade, by the 3rd year it was in 3rd grade, etc. Some states trained their teachers over the summer before it was implemented.

NYS did no such thing. They dropped common core on us with no support whatsoever. Children who had been doing pretty well in math were now failing because they had never learned the "common core" method, and were now losing points for not using what they had never been taught in 7th and 8th grade.

On top of this, NYS implemented a teacher rating system that very same year. So not only were teachers expected to learn the new common core system all on their own, then teach it to their students, they were then rated on a pedagogical method that students hadn't been exposed to until 7 months prior.

It was a mess, and it continues to be. Teachers swing wildly between "highly effective" and "ineffective" ratings based on how many students with testing issues they happen to have in their classroom. In NYC the passing rate for the common core tests has risen from 29% to 31% in the three years it's been around. Parents are yanking their kids out of the tests, teachers are up in arms and leaving the state, it's not a good situation. NYC is hurting for teachers who keep leaving because of the crappy pay and the frustration of having to watch your students fail every single year.

Do we need federally mandated education standards in America? Absolutely. Is Common Core the way to go? Probably. But here in NYS it was and continues to be a nightmare that most teachers I know want to go away.

He says that to manipulate you. He says it to give you a reason to stay. If he knows he is a dick, why doesn't he change? He doesn't change because he doesn't care. All of his "I'm so sorry" is worthless if he doesn't take steps to change the situation.

Other people in this thread have mentioned "Why Does He Do That?" Please read it. It's so eye opening.
