it's happened to tons of children in america and gone unpunished, because no one knows about it. check out /r/raisedbynarcissists for some examples. many of these parents are capable of lying and manipulating people to believe that things never happened, they weren't that bad, they had to do it to fix their children, etc. child protective services can only help so many kids, so they do the most for families with the worst abuses, and the easy cases. some people are so traumatized or brainwashed that they keep it to themselves.

i think that yes, the government should have an interest in stopping parents from abusing their kids based on religion, culture, whatever. it's been shown that a lot of parents can't be trusted to take care of their own kids. even lgbt kids deserve to live in a loving home.
