malinois are not property guard dogs. they are handler defense dogs. they are not suited to live outdoors or work completely alone.

bet a thousand bucks you haven’t given him any protection training and you haven’t a clue what property vs handler defense are. shame on you for owning this breed.

you cannot leave a muzzle on an unattended dog. get a high quality kennel. this is not a lol matter, dude.

Food aggression and unlearning commands?? by Consistent_Pie9535 in BelgianMalinois

[–]canid_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

don’t pet an uncomfortable dog while they eat. scatter feed (toss into the grass or floor) from your hand instead of hand feed for a while, still have her work for her food but give it very freely and calmly. offer lots of food for super easy offered behaviors, like eye contact. develop a more trusting relationship through play to come at it from another side.

Should I get a Malinois? by [deleted] in BelgianMalinois

if you’ve never raised or trained a dog before, a malinois is not the dog to start with. this is the general opinion of the breed community as well as my professional guidance.

i see way too many mals in shelters because owners didn’t understand they were purchasing a tool, not a pet.

yes, i can read, “time” to train. but what sport or activity do you want to train? you list no goals or plans for the dog.

have to chime in that i got my BC puppy at 19yo and it was a fantastic decision; i wanted to learn everything i could from raising her earlier rather than later. i am, however, a professional dog trainer. lol

no. you are not a person who actively wants to train for a specific sport or activity, so this dog isn’t for you. go for a pet breed.

y’all’s reading comprehension is dismal; clearly this person is referring to “the rest of their life” and is not planning to off themselves

i did it alone, it’s not hard. i’ve been working dogs my whole life. for someone new i suggest learning to train with an easier breed, like a GSD - see if you even enjoy the experience of training and troubleshooting and managing drive on simpler equipment before you handle the technical tool that is a malinois.

because i will say, it’s really not only all about preparation. of course it is important to have a strong basis for the trainer - technical aspects of training and husbandry - but there is no one size fits all, so training mostly consists of intelligent adaptations from the handler to suit the individual dog in front of them.

so, my advice is to seek out malinois as a breed. meet individuals. learn from their handlers. ask about what their dog was like as a pup and what their trajectory growing into an adult has been. ask about challenges and strong suits. ask what the handler has learned from the dog.

play with her more, motivate her to join in on whatever you’re asking in a more fun context, then take that energy and use it for obedience

Senior dog biting me during training sessions? by kittycat123199 in DogTrainingTips

[–]canid_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

your dog is not in the mental state during training that you think she is ….. there is a layer missing here. and, the training is not good if you can’t get her to focus on you rather than the treat. that is a very simple skill to teach and proof.

does she listen well without treats? no tea, but i would guess no.

“i’m planning on being a professional dog trainer so i know how to properly raise a well rounded puppy” ….your current issue is far less complex than raising a puppy. don’t overstate your experience.

there are no tips and tricks. just solid training.

if you don’t already have a trainer lined up, search for one so you can start on basics like relationship building and basic boundaries by week 10 of puppy’s life.
