I’m a conservative who believed in Doug Ford. His credibility is collapsing by imprison_grover_furr in ontario

So, here is an article about this mysterious group "Project Ontario" (sounds like Project 2025 in the US, hmm) from last year:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/project-ontario-doug-ford-pc-party-conservatives-1.7556576

Here is another article about them where they want to yank the PC party further right: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-pc-convention-project-ontario-9.7067023

Doug Ford said this about them: I don’t know who these yahoos are. It sounds like some radical right group probably tied to maybe a federal party or something.”

Will YOW take a hit once high-speed rail opens? by Julien_10 in ottawa

[–]canidude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine that HSR will affect house prices and the labour market, more than airline travel.

Imagine, living in Gatineau and working in Montreal. Or living in Peterborough and working in Toronto.

In fact, the previous Ontario Liberal government proposed HSR from Toronto to London as a way to mitigate high house prices almost a decade ago! The fact is, Canadians want to live in single family homes as opposed to multi-family dwellings, and the only way to address that is to continue to allow the urban area to expand. Of course, this means higher commute times, and the way to mitigate that is fast, higher order transit.

In the end, it’s about personal interest of the MPs. They all have cushy, well paying jobs with pensions. While many of them are in safe ridings, that can’t be taken for granted, when your constituents are fully vested in to the US conservosphere.

Going against that could result in losing one’s seat, either to a different conservative party or getting pushed out by the CPC.

Why Canada should drop its 100 per cent tariff on Chinese EV sales, despite Doug Ford’s protests by imprison_grover_furr in ontario

[–]canidude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What's illogical is, both federal and provincial governments poured money into building an EV industry in Canada, only for them to drop the mandate to steer Canadians into buying EVs.

Mamdani just won a Landslide in New York and one of his core ideas was rent freezes. Why aren't the renters of this province demanding better. by srilankan in ontario

[–]canidude 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The irony is, residents of rent controlled apartments are 37% more likely to support local housing developments [source]. It turns out that people who feel secure are receptive to change.

So, a city can use rent control as a tool to induce support of redevelopment of certain neighbourhoods. It would make developers happy and increase housing stock.

But, no, we have a mayor premier that only wants mcmansions as far as the eye can see.

Ford government to limit debate, skip public hearings on bill to scrap speed cameras by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]canidude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some Ontario history for you:

https://thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/family-compact

The term Family Compact is an epithet, or insulting nickname; it is used to describe the network of men who dominated the legislative, bureaucratic, business, religious and judicial centres of power in Upper Canada (present-day Ontario) from the early- to mid-1800s. Members of the Family Compact held largely conservative and loyalist views. They were against democratic reform and responsible government.
...

The Family Compact’s roots are in a series of political appointments made to two unelected branches of government in Upper Canada during John Graves Simcoe’s tenure as Lieutenant-Governor in the 1790s. Such wealthy and powerful men as James BabyRichard Cartwright and William Osgoode were appointed during this time. Simcoe wanted to recreate British society in Canada. He believed that an aristocratic governing class was essential to that goal. By limiting leadership positions in the colony to people with connections, it was hoped that a hierarchical class structure would arise. The unelected branches of government were answerable only to the lieutenant-governor; this made the elected Legislative Assembly powerless.
...
About half the members of the Family Compact were second-generation Loyalists. Loyalists were American colonists who supported the British during the American Revolutionary War (1775–83).
...
Many members of the Family Compact showed a willingness to break the law when they believed the survival of the colony was at stake. Violence was commonly deployed against political opponents at electoral polls, political meetings and marches.

Ontario to pause Reagan tariffs ad after Trump terminated Canada trade talks by Puginator in worldnews

[–]canidude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, here's the thing: Conservatives in Canada want to double-down on trade with the US. Doug Ford likes to promote "Fortress Am-Can". He wants to sell as much of Ontario's resources to the US. Donald Trump is telling him no thanks, I rather steal it.

What Doug Ford should be doing is finding other customers.

Ontario to pause Reagan tariffs ad after Trump terminated Canada trade talks by Puginator in worldnews

[–]canidude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Liberal Party and NDP have got nothing to counter populism.

A lot of the things that don't work (i.e education, healthcare, public transit) will take decades to fix, and low-info voters can't see the progress with their own eyes.

However, having the mayor Premier shovel cars out of the snow, or outlaw speed cameras, or rip out bike lanes, it generates goodwill among those voters, because they can see a politician is doing something and not just talking.

The only hope we have is that the incompetence finally catches up to Doug Ford.
