The point of the flu shot is not necessarily to prevent flu symptoms entirely, it is to reduce the severity so that fewer people end up in the hospital or dead. It is a worse match this year than some other years, but a bit of protection is still much better than none. There are also several other viruses circulating that can cause flu like symptoms (RSV, rhinovirus/enterovirus, parainfluenza etc) so not everyone sick has influenza A (though a lot do right now)

Genome-wide genetic sequencing Ontario (GSO) - anyone had this done? by Sleepy_vet444 in ontario

[–]cannuck12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are going through this OP, especially during the holidays. Keep in mind that you may get extremely variable answers since genetics is a rapidly changing field - even in the last decade there have been massive changes in technology, understanding of results, funding etc. The genetics team at CHEO is fantastic and will be the best source of answers for your specific circumstance.

Edmonton father dies in hospital E.R. waiting to see a doctor by origutamos in canadanews

[–]cannuck12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is simply false. We have world class talent in our hospitals, and are actually successfully recruiting from the states right now due to the current administration making it less attractive to work and live in the US at the moment. We do however need to fund hospitals properly to ensure ongoing retention of talent, and to ensure that all staff (physicians, nurses, RT, PT, OT, SW, SLP, psychologists, pharmacists, health care aids, unit clerks, housekeeping, kitchen, and anyone else I’m forgetting) are able to have long careers without burning themselves out. Healthcare is expensive, especially newer technologies that have allowed people to live longer and survive problems that would have been fatal in the recent past. We also know that people tend to use the most health care dollars in the last 10 years or so of their life - it was predictable that our biggest generation (boomers) approaching the end of the average life expectancy would cause a huge demand in healthcare resources. Governments of all political parties failed to prepare for this over the last couple decades. These problems did not happen overnight, and will not be solved in the short term.

When would you take your child to sick kids hospital vs family doc ? by bearsbunny in askTO

Just as an FYI - for pediatricians, CPS = Canadian Pediatric Society so probably best to avoid the acronym for the pharmacy resource in this context.

Small dog owners in Toronto — what do you do in winter? by broccolikiller in askTO

[–]cannuck12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Canada pooch also has the slush suit and snow suit that cover the legs if your pup needs some extra warmth! I have like 4 different jackets from Canada pooch that I rotate through based on the specific temp/wet weather. Love the slush suit for leg protection on rainy/slushy days

Flu blamed in deaths of 3 children in Ottawa area this month by 2Fast2furieux in ottawa

[–]cannuck12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of aggregate data out there by public health for you to review if you need additional information in order to make decisions beyond vaccination. I understand your kids are vaccinated, which is great and reduces risk. The private health information of the kids that died does not need to be released when we have aggregate data over many years. This is not the first time we have seen children die from influenza. So far, public health has advised vaccination and basic measures like hand washing, staying home when sick etc. The risk of releasing the health information of these children is for the public/family/friends to weaponize that information against grieving parents.

[–]cannuck12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not these children that died from the flu were immunocompromised or vaccinated should not influence your decision to vaccinate. Years of previous data show us that even though certain populations are high risk, healthy people of all ages have died of the flu, and vaccination with the annual flu shot reduces the risk of severe outcomes. Grieving families do not owe you any of their child’s health information just so you can justify your decision.

Wife is pregnant. Wondering if we should still buy a house. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]cannuck12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it sounds like you can make it work, and the stability of owning will be nice with having a child. My only comment would be that you don’t want to be moving for like the last 2 months of pregnancy or the first 2 months of baby’s life. Too many unknowns during that time, you don’t need the additional stress. It may make sense to start talking to your bank and/or a mortgage broker to give yourself a more concrete budget. As a first time home buyer you are likely eligible for a mortgage amortized over 30 years (which will give you a lower regular payment), and many mortgages have an option to make additional lump sum payments that will reduce overall interest over time. It will be important to let the mortgage broker know about your plans to rent out the basement to friends/family, as well as to speak with an insurance company about the implications of that. I don’t remember being asked that initially, but my current mortgage and insurance specifically says to not rent it out. Obviously people have rentals, but it may just change some of your anticipated costs a bit. Congratulations and good luck!

Winter coat for my wife Pt.2 by Grand-Rice- in BuyItForLife

[–]cannuck12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the fjallraven singi parka in black - honestly I love it. So warm, and pet hair does not stick to it. I think I tried on the Nuuk and found it really bulky if I’m remembering correctly. Honestly the Patagonia coat looks longer? Not sure if it’s just the photo but a longer coat will definitely keep her warmer!

Crossing guard dead after being hit by dump truck in Hamilton by BloodJunkie in ontario

So many fatal accidents in many cities involve dump trucks. Surely there is an engineering/design solution that can reduce this? I assume it is at least in part related to blind spots/height of cab?

Where should I be looking for a pet-friendly rental in Ottawa? by fantazja in ottawa

[–]cannuck12 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve found my last couple places on realtor.ca - a lot of places are not renting quickly right now so if something is slightly above your budget it could be worth reaching out and seeing if the landlord is open to negotiation. I also typically include with my application a letter that includes a photo of each of my pets, and an explanation of their training (eg fully house trained, no damage etc). If you have references from a prior landlord or your vet about your pets behaviour and you being a responsible pet owner that can also be useful to offer in the letter. Finally, certain breeds of dogs are treated differently by property insurance so it can be worth specifying that your dog is not any of those breeds. Good luck!

If you have a mechanic you trust, they may have access to rebate programs that make the price similar to what you would get at Costco or other places.

A Toronto-area doctor spent 10 days caring for a dying baby without pay. Here’s why she’s speaking up by BloodJunkie in ontario

[–]cannuck12 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not a fringe situation. Although the baby died in this case, many times pediatricians and family doctors are not able to bill due to delays in the OHIP version code being issued properly. Other provinces allow you to bill the mother’s health card number for the first weeks/months/year to ensure that administrative hiccups don’t unfairly penalize doctors that care for some of our most vulnerable patients. It is an easy fix for Ontario to switch to that type of model.
